View Full Version : Has Maria ever had a boyfriend?

I find it interesting she never has a man. Has she ever said anything about her love life in interviews? It seems like she's never had a boyfriend before. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm 22 in a couple of weeks and never had a real boyfriend. I kind of have one now, but not really. But I would like to see her with one. It would be a fun storyline for her life. It is always fun when famous people are in relationships. The girl tennisfans always care about who the ATP guys are dating, but there's not as much emphasis on the love lives of the girls of the WTA Tour. Only Kim, Kournikova and Hingis have managed to make that somewhat exciting for the press in the past few years.

You guys, if you want to know, go ask Galina Sharapova- Maria's grandmom.
"I'm sure I would know if there was a boyfriend." said Galina.

Maybe this quote answers the question:
"I have 3 good friends.I have one friend in Russia and two friends in the U.S. My best friend lives in Los Angeles, so I get to see her quite a lot when I'm there but, obviously, I don't see her all the time.My friend in Russia I haven't seen her for over a year. So it's not easy. They're all girls. It's impossible to have guy friends. There is no such thing as a friend that's a guy. That's just impossible." Tennislife Mag. 2006 april

She always says in interviews that she doesn't want to talk about whether she's got a boyf and other personall stuff. And she always gets away with that so I guess we will never know..

If she admitted to having a boyfriend the press scrutiny would be fierce, and she already has to deal with enough paparazi as it is.

I respect the fact that she doesn't want to talk too much about her private life. Just because "every other" one does it there's no need for Maria to do so.

Or that she doesn't want to get hounded about it...If she did have a boyfriend who wasn't famous and she admitted it could turn his life upside down in a way he wouldn't like...so it could be a way to protect him.

If they are another player on the ATP tour it could be casual as they are apart for long periods of time!

By telling the Media your in a relationship only increases their scrutiny of you and your lover ten fold, Maria might not want that!

Why do other celebs try to hide their romances: Britney and Justin (circa baby one more time), Keira Knightly and Jamie Dornan etc?

Yeah but private life is what you do with that person and what you get up to thats private life, who your partner is appears to be a stat for someone as in job applications etc you have to fill in martial status and i think it would be nice for us fans to know if she was in a relationship which i doubt at the moment and if she was to say she wouldnt get as much pestering about it because its out there and she wouldnt get so annoyed like she does about the questions

Well didn't she say earlier this year that she doesn't have a boyfriend? That should be enough for now. I bet you'll get an update soon enough. Not all people respect her privacy and if she as much as gives them a hint they'll harass her endlessly. I allow her to keep her personal life a secret if she wants to.

I mean I do understand why people are so interested. A lot of "news" papers would go out of business if they weren't. I guess I'm just so negative about it because I personally would hate it if my personal life was discussed in public. :)
I'll let Maria handle it the way she sees best.

I would rather she kept that to herself really, it wouldn't do either her orf her partner any good if she did come out with it, they would be hounded by the press.

Although the off court stuff is nice and it's good to see the odd photoshoot, I'm sure most fans will agree with me, that it's the results that only really matter and as long as they a good I'm happy!

Look what happens with the British Press when they find out a footballer has a new Girlfriend or gets married, they chase the poor girl around. It may not be the same level for a BF of Maria but I imagine the camermen would be hunting them alot and looking for bad stories!.

I think as human beings, we are naturally gossipy or curious about other people's lives, whether it's on a small scale of talking about our friends' relationship woes with our other friends, or talking about Brangelina and watch entertainment programs. If Masha had a boyfriend, I'd read all about it because when you're a public figure, unfortunately, people who you've never met in your life feel like they know you, and you really can't blame them--when you're in camera commercials and car commercials and watch ads and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and releasing a perfume.

In tennis, love is nothing

Andy & Maria need game to set match

Maria Sharapova is pumped, but rumored mixed doubles pairing with Andy Roddick could use some court sense.
Is there an uglier pair of tennis players than Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick?

This is written with a touch of irony, of course, on a slow, rainy day at Flushing Meadows. Sharapova is model-ish and blond. Roddick is rugged-ish, very American. We all know that. They are wealthy from endorsements. They are treated as marquee draws around here, Photoshopped into all those U.S. Open ad montages.

They are not particularly obnoxious personalities, by the sport's famous bratty standards. Sharapova is a plucky survivor and Roddick is a likable wise guy.

And if in fact they are dating, as is the widely held belief, then they surely make a handsome, hypothetical couple off the court.

But the operating phrase here is "off the court." Because once either of these players sets foot on clay, cement or finely-cut grass, then all those slick commercials mean nothing and he or she becomes suddenly unwatchable. Rodapova, as they are called collectively, is a stomping, thumping Godzilla.

There is no nuance to their games, no point-building, no contribution to the collective knowledge of playing the sport. Roddick hits his 130-mph serve, takes two steps on the court, fires a crosscourt forehand winner off the weak return. Sharapova scrambles side to side chasing balls, hoping to plant her feet just long enough to slug one down the line.

The only debate, really, is which player is tougher to watch. And here, the nod goes to Sharapova, but not by much.

Roddick is a hopeless hybrid, a serve-and-baseline guy whose strokes are way too wrist-y. He doesn't play angles well, doesn't charge the net when he clearly has an opponent at a disadvantage. His volleys are more of a desperate stab than an intuitive touch.

You keep waiting for his right hand to fall off, but somehow it has remained attached to the forearm. Three years ago at Wimbledon, Todd Martin predicted just such a disaster for Roddick.

"If he swings like that the rest of his career and he makes it to 32, I take my hat off to him," Martin said.

Roddick turns 24 today. Happy birthday. Eight years left, on Martin's stopwatch.

Then there are other things about Roddick that are thoroughly disturbing. He stole Alex Rodriguez's nickname. And he helped to bring the baseball cap back into fashion, which is one of the worst public-relations problems faced today by tennis. The cap obscures the faces and personalities of players, makes them all look the same.

So Roddick is guilty as charged, painful to watch. But Sharapova is worse. She uses her racket as a club, hammering groundstrokes until an opponent can no longer withstand the hideous grunting and the low trajectories. Anna Kournikova, the original It Girl, was far more fluid, if only she had a serve.

Sharapova wears a dumb visor. She inspires knockoffs, like Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic, a dead ringer. And with Sharapova, we must put up with her father, Yuri, having a nervous breakdown every time in the players' box. We also must endure those insipid, glamour-girl press conference exchanges, like this one last Saturday:

Q. "You are a professional athlete with movie-star looks, so everybody wants to know, what are you looking for in a boyfriend?"

A. "My case is a little different, because I'm a professional athlete and I travel around the world 10months a year, so probably someone who understands the business that I'm in and, you know, respects it. But also someone that has a good sense of humor and, umm, yeah, I'm not too picky."

Could she have described Roddick any more precisely? Why don't they just get a room already?

Sharapova and Roddick shouldn't be hiding these alleged feelings for each other. They ought to be romancing each other very publicly - kissing, hugging, whatever it takes to make us forget their tennis.

They should be creating a stir in their moribund sport.

As far as couples go, hypothetical or real, Rodapova makes a good deal of sense. It's always a good idea in tennis to date someone around your own ranking. Romances with larger rankings differentials - who can forget the Jennifer Capriati-Xavier Malisse disaster? - have very short shelf lives.

Roddick and Sharapova are meant for each other. They take nice photos. They are a very pretty duo.

But they are also 28 Grand Slam titles behind that other cute couple, Agassi-Graf.

Maybe there is a societal (and financial) reason Maria wants to keep her relationships (if she's ever had one) out of the public. Maybe Maria is not interested in the opposite sex. And this is the reason she refuses to comment of her private life and relationships. She would lose many of her fans and much of her endorsement deals if it turns out she were a lesbian and the public knew about it. She probably has had a relationship before. At her oncourt Wimbledon interview in 2004 after winning, she mentioned a special someone. It's peculiar that she chose those words. Afterwards, she said something to the effect, how do you know it's a boy. She may have been just joking and being coy, but maybe she was serious.

Not only would she gain many fans in the gay community she would actually more than likely gain endorsements coz there isn't any marketable lesbians on the tour and the way the world is now, it would certainly gain her more of an interest... According to Stubbs, there are A LOT of girls on tour who are gay but just not out about it...

It would be interesting if she was a lesbian to see the attention she would get... I think a lot of guys would still be interested! :p
But the media would go CRAZY with match ups for her, especially Makiri seeing they are friends and neither likes to talk about their private life!

If Maria came out as a lesbian, she would gain fans in the g a y community, but she would lose far more mainstream fans who idolize her and major corporation sponsorship who don't like controversy. Also as far as Maria saying Orlando Bloom is good looking and hot, this is not an indication either way. Many lesbians think some guys are hot, just like many straight women can think other women are hot, or g a y guys can think some women are sexy.

anyone noticed how, in the last tournament that Agassi played, Andy Roddick reveals his new "bow"? The Sports Guy describes Roddick as the "homeless man's Agassi", and after seeing Roddick bow to the four corners like Agassi does, I had to chuckle. The bow is so obviously contrived.
