In 2005 Serena Williams, Justine Henin Hardenne, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters won the 4 Grand Slam titles.

Which player, in your opinion, produced their highest level of tennis, were evidently the most hungry and dominated their way to the final?

In my opinion I would say Venus Williams had the most dominant and exciting run to winning a Grand Slam title in 2005.

By the way, do you agree that the four players that won Grand Slam titles last year are deffinitely the best players in the world *when fully fit and fully motivated*??

Thanks.

I guess I am biased because I lived this wonderful fortnight so intensively but for me it was Kim's run to the US Open title.
I also has to do with her dominance in the US Open Series. These weeks were fantastic, she was on a roll, she defeated Justine in Toronto. You just felt that she had a meeting with destiny on that Saturday in September. Kim Clijsters had to win that first slam and she would do it at the US Open 2005.

Venus, far and away. She beat the best and the brightest, who were playing extremely well, to win the title, particularly when everyone was saying for like months that she was washed up and a big loser.

Justine had some easy feasting at the French, like the final. It's not her fault no one played decent against her, but I thought Venus' run was more impressive based on how well her opposition was playing.

All were impressive in different ways:

Serena coming from the brink of defeat in both the SF and finals, to claim the title.

Henin undefeated on the clay and skinning of her opponent in the final.

Venus playing extraordinary tennis defeating the #2 and #1 ranked players and winning in the longest final in the history of the event as the lowest seed.

Kim nearly undefeated in the lead up to the event, overcoming a history of choking, and winning her first grand slam.

All thrilling, wonderful tennis. And yes, these four are the best in the world.

Let's hope that Aus Open is the exception to what we can expect in grand slam finals for the rest of the year.

How can you say that ? Kim is a one slam wonder

Seriously for me they are, at their best. But this days there are few players who can change it.

They were impressive in their own way. I mean Serena's return at the Australian Open was eagerly anticipated because no one knew how fit she'd be. Justine had that amazing clay court run throughout the whole season and capped it off with a brilliant French Open. No one had put Venus as a favourite for winning Wimbledon last year but she had a terrific run and became the lowest seeded player to win with amazing victories over Sharapova and Davenport. Kim played a brilliant US Open, kept her head throughout and was rewarded with her well-deserved first Slam victory.

Based on what their oposition showed I'd say Venus and Serena. Kim won - it was her destiny. JHH- unbeaten on clay no surprise at all. Quality of the quarters, semis and finals was better in AO and Wimbledon than in RG and USO.
Some of best matches in 2005 - Wimbledon final and Vee-Masha clash, also Masha Vs Ree in AO semis, Kuzzy Vs JHH in RG and Davenport vs Molik AO ' 05 1/4F.IMHO

It depends what you mean by impressive. In terms of consistency of form and domination on that surface, that's Kim and Justine. Both beat top players right and left in their respective dominations of hard and clay. In terms of bringing explosive form out of nowhere and showing amazing amounts of grit, determination and inner confidence, I'd say Serena and Venus' performances.

Venus, it seemed improbable that the 14th seeded player would win a grand slam. Especially after she had lost in the second round the year before. Look at her draw....in her QUARTER, she had the FRENCH OPEN CHAMPION (and former Wimbledon finalist), and the #4 player in the world and AUSTRALIAN OPEN CHAMPION and 2-TIME WIMBLEDON CHAMPION. I love Venus, but even as unfit as Serena was, I still thought she would get futher than Venus. Venus came from a HORRIBLE showing at the French and just TURNED IT ON. She won 12 straight sets, then came from CHAMPIONSHIP POINT DOWN to win her 3rd final in 6 years.

Venus' was definately the most impressive. Although I love Serena, and think her run to the AO Championship was great, because she was still stinging from three bad losses in 2004: Wimbledon Final, US Open Quarterfinal, YEC Final. She wanted to avenge those losses, and she did just that!

Venus at Wimbly took everyone by surprise and she beat the defending champ and Lindsay - the No1, as well as Serena's nemesis! Everyone had written Venus off. her reaction to winning said it all.

Kim's run in the US series was magnificent, but still didn't quite have the awe inspiring X factor of Venus' win for me.

Roland Garros was a bit flat for me. The final very poor. Justine was brilliant throughout the toruney, but it was a bit like when Sampras kept winning Wimbly.

from a biased point of view, kim had the most impressive run for me. winning the us open series and topping it up with her maiden grand slam win. claiming the biggest pay cheque in women's tennis history. pretty impressive stuff.

but venus had also had a dream run in wimbledon. exorcising her demons and shutting those doubters up. so to be fair, i'll say venus. :)

Definitely Venus and Kim. Venus, because it was totally unexpected and she fought like hell, and Kim had to fight a lot of demons and past experiences to overcome Venus in the quarters, Maria in the SFs (after wasting 5 mps in 2nd set) and finally win the final match:worship:! Personally it's my favorite:D!

I say Justine. Total dominance in the warmups. Fighting off the MP's against Sveta. Then embarrassing Sharapova and esp. Mary. :worship:
As much I hate to say, Kim is second above the WS. It was pretty impressive to win big March and then win 3 of the 4 tournaments she played in the summer then win the USO.

Serena's!

Coming back from stomach injury to win the OZ Open, saving 2 MPs in the semis :worship:

She had a heated match with Petrova, beat Mauresmo comfortably and beat Lindsay in the final :worship:

Serena beat Mirza,Petrova,Mauresmo(injured),Sharapova and Davenport, the most impressive run to me.
But to me,Venus showed the most impressive tennis in the whole year, especially against Maria,a fantastic match.
So I go for Venus and Serena is a very close second. Kim played well but I think she did less than the Williamses. JHH beat nothing at RG :o
