Patrick Rafter Dismisses Mark Philippoussis

Philippoussis Falls

Next Generation Adelaide International
Patrick Rafter Defeats Mark Philippoussis; 6-7 7-6 7-6(13)
Interview with Mark Philippoussis

Questions for Mark Philippoussis please

Q. What was most difficult in this match?
Mark Philippoussis Keeping my composure throughout was probably the hardest thing. When you're playing a match that's so close, neither of us lost serve, it really is tough to lose a tiebreak. A lot of credit goes to Patrick for coming back after losing that first tiebreak. I was sitting with 4 matchpoints in the final tiebreak, but couldn't get it done. To lose 15-13 in a tiebreak is so tough. I just feel drained emotionally.

Q. Based on how you played today, is this likely to be a rivalry?
Mark Philippoussis Definitely think there could be, we both are very even in terms of how we play. Big serves and a solid volley game make breaks hard. I had some breakpoint chances, but could never convert. I would certainly love to play again and get some retribution.

Q. Was this a major setback, or was it just a bump in the road?
Mark Philippoussis I'm not feeling to bad about this loss. I played well, his game was just very hard to counter, made returning serves very hard. But he had no answers for my service game either. So I'm feeling confident for future opponents.

Q. What kind of preparation will you do for your next match?
Mark Philippoussis Definitely have to work on returning serves. I was unable to do anything against his curved serve while on the right side of the court. I don't know if this is an exploit, but I tried everything to get a successful return and never could.

Q. What prevented you from maintaining your lead?
Mark Philippoussis Just some bad breaks in the tiebreaks. The second tiebreak I committed my first 2 unforced errors of the game to give him a 4-1 advantage. That really hurt. When I had 2 matchpoints in a row during the second tiebreak he made an unexpected pair of lob returns to messed up my topspin strokes. Good shot variation by Rafter.

ASB Classic
Hingis (SUI) Defeats T. Golovin (FRA); 1-6 6-2 6-4
Interview with Hingis (SUI)

Questions for please

Q. What was most difficult in winning this match?
Well being that it was a tight three setter, it would be hard to pinpoint one thing that was difficult. I was nervous for sure.

Q. What allowed you to come back from behind?
After the first set which seem to go by in a flash. I took a moment and a deep breath and just told myself to forget about the first set and go out there and impose my game on her

Q. What expectations do you have for the rest of this event?
Well im in the semi finals which im very happy about, however I think I have a great chance to win it if I settle down and just play my game and not worry so much about the person on the other side of the net.

Q. Have you looked ahead in the draw?
No. I just take one game at a time. I have been told im going to be playing Daniela Hantuchova which will be tough, she hits the ball very hard and is very aggressive. Im going to have to be patient with her and go for my shots when I get the opening.

Q. Who, aside from yourself, do you think may win this event?
Well Serena and Chanda are both extremely accomplish players from previous tours ,so I know there the heavy favorites at this point
