oh yes, especially in the 1st set- until 4-3 it was fantastic match but then, Elena lost her concentration and gave many gifts to Martina. the 2nd set was little weird in the first games but Martina was consistent while Elena made stupid desicions and missed many options to come back....

Well Luke, I'll tell you one thing, the first return of serve Martina played was a DROP SHOT WINNER!!!! It says it all, doesn't it? Our Martina was on fire, her backhand was impeccable, her volleys superb. She surprised Elena with her own medecine, POWER (plus skills, obviously). Elena didn't play bad, but in the end Martina had more winners than her.

Good match by Martina, smart, consistent counter-attacking.

Elena actually set up a lot of points well, and either did not hit the next shot well or hit an unforced error, especially when she had 0-30 or 0-40 on Martina's serve.

Elena needs to toughen up her shot selection on the clay to have the best chance at the French.

Overall, it was a fun match and closer than the score indicates.

That's a bad loss by Elena. Not so much that she lost, but the fact that it was 3 and 2, on Elena's best surface, nad probably Martina's worst.

Hopefully this means she'll peak later, come RG time, but who knows?

Anyway, great win for Martina, she's certainly one of the best 20 players in the world, and hopefully she proves this match was no flash in the pan, and wins her next match.

Hingis in contention for elusive Grand Slam
Thu 11 May, 1:31 PM
http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/11052006/3/hing...grand-slam.html (http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/11052006/3/hingis-contention-elusive-grand-slam.html)

BERLIN (AFP) - Martina Hingis announced herself as a contender for the only Grand Slam title she has never won with an impressive revenge victory which carried her to the quarter-finals of the German Open.

Hingis' 6-3, 6-2 win over Elena Dementieva, the world number five from Russia, contained a host of beautifully constructed rallies and atoned for the Swiss player's heavy defeat in Tokyo three months ago.

It also suggested that, although this is Hingis's first clay court tournament for four years, she is playing well enough on this surface to be one of the title contenders for the French Open which starts later this month.

"It takes a while to get used to the movement, the sliding you need to use on clay, but so far I seem to have got back into without problems," said Hingis.

"I didn't want this win to slip away. I was playing a very high level match. But I knew I was up against a leading player and I didn't want to let it slip.

"Definitely today I went up a level. Sometimes when tour opponents hit hard you have to do something and put more energy into hitting the ball and I think I did that.

"Since I came back this was one of my best wins, and the pleasure of this was the performance - that I played a really great match."

But although Hingis produced many trademark rallies full of changes of angle, pace and spin, she also revealed some new qualities.

Faced with one of the most dangerous strikers of a ball off the ground, Hingis set out to repel this threat by hitting harder than usual and frustrating the Dementieva attack by attacking her.

It produced many rousing rallies, and a match which could have changed direction had Dementieva managed to regain parity.

But although she came back from 1-4 down to 3-4 Dementieva immediately dropped serve with an indifferent game, and once Hingis had closed out the first set efficiently it had a profound effect on the psychology of the match.

After that the former triple Grand Slam titleholder knew that she could still deliver on the dirt, and began to create some sharp angles and some cleverly stolen approaches.

Dementieva nevertheless had chances to get back into it, getting Hingis twice at love-30 on her serve and once at 15-40, but in none of these three games could she capitalise.

The moment which seemed to signal impending defeat came when Dementieva thought she had worked another break point at 2-3 in the second set, only for the line judge to call her angled ball wide of the sideline. She contested the decision, only for the umpire to descend from his chair and call it out as well.

Earlier Li Na continued her great run and reached the quarter-finals of a Tier One event for the first time in her career.

Her emphatic 6-0, 6-1 victory over the tired Columbian, Catalina Castano, lasted only 51 minutes, suggesting Li has made an excellent recovery from the heat exhaustion which caused her to retire in the final of the Estoril Open last week.

Hingis Beats Dementieva at German Open

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060511/ap_on_...n_german_open_6 (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060511/ap_on_sp_te_ga_su/ten_german_open_6)

BERLIN - Martina Hingis beat fifth-seeded Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-2 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the German Open.

Hingis used a mix of precision shots for a surprisingly easy win on the clay court. Dementieva had routed her 6-2, 6-0 at Tokyo in February — the only final for Hingis since she came back in January from a three-year injury retirement.

It was the second time this week that Hingis avenged a previous loss. In the first round, she ousted Italy's Flavia Pennetta — the first player she lost to in her comeback.

"This is becoming the week of revenge," Hingis said. "Last time, I didn't have a chance. This is one of best matches I have played."'

The unseeded Hingis needed only 75 minutes to oust No. 8 Dementieva from the French Open warmup. Her only real trouble came when she fought off three break chances while leading 2-1 in the second set.

The Swiss had trouble with Dementieva before injuries forced her temporary retirement. In 2001 and 2002, the Russian beat her in two lopsided matches.

Hingis has two wins over top five players and reached the quarterfinals at seven of nine events on her comeback, including the Australian Open. Although ranked No. 23, Hingis is looking for her first title and a seeding at bigger events.

Hingis admitted the win would fill her full of confidence for a long run in the competition.

"It hasn't really happened for me yet," Hingis said. "But I need a higher ranking to stop meeting such tough players in the early rounds."

"Confidence is very important for me," said the Swiss. "It's been quite a long time since I beat her in a tournament, so it's a really good comeback after losing three times in a row to Dementieva.

"This feels really good. I had made up my mind to try and attack. My game play was to play long rallies to try and shake her out of her rhythm, because when she's in her rhythm, she's very easy to lose against."

Hingis next faces the winner of top-ranked Amelie Mauresmo and Russia's Anna Chakvetadze, who played later Thursday. Other top players in action are Nadia Petrova, riding an 11-match unbeaten streak on clay, and defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Hmm Venus is a much more complete player whan Dementieva, Venus reached finals of all grand slams, so.
But i like to think and most of you Venus fans know that Venus second best surface since 2004 without a doubt is clay. Her # of titles since 2004, her % win-loss record and performance at grand slams say. Im not inveting anything. The numbers are there.

I think elena could have won if she had attacked hingis serves more, esp. the second serves.

Venus was at least 2 meters closer to the service line than elena on hingis serves. Venus made hingis serve shaky, i think elena should be good enough to to the same. One thing players still have to learn from the williamses.

I didn't want to get out of bed this morning because I knew I would get online only to start off the day depressed as Hingis received another beatdown from Dementieva (who I really like, by the way). I sat in bed thinking, "Why did my poor Martina have to draw her so early?"

So, this is some of the best wake-up news ever!!! Go, Martina! Didn't see the match but it sounds like you were playing an attacking game? Keep that up, Martina. Stop waiting for errors. Go for shots. You are good at attacking, too .... just play like you did in the AO QF 2001. Attack!

It's possible, but unlikely. She would probably need to at least win her next match in Berlin, and then get very far in Rome.

It seems my predicting abilities were at their best yesterday. I voted Martina will win in two sets. The thing is I would have preferred a three-setter. I couldn’t see the entire match, so I cannot judge nor interpret the result, but, for what I saw, it seems Martina managed to handle Lena’s powerful game very well.

It is a great victory for her. I say it again, I think Martina could be a major threat for everyone at Roland Garros. ˇUn saludo!

Martina came at Elena really agressively in this match and played very High Quality tennis. She hit very hard and served well, particularly the serve out wide.

While Elena played well in the 1st set, she allowed Martina to dictate play. Martina always kept playing to Elena's backhand, then went suddenly to the fh and usually got the error. Elenas drop shots were bad....

I don't understand why Lena made many drop shots against Hingis- it was nice gift to Martina...poor desicions of Lena against tough Martina

[...]

oh yes, especially in the 1st set- until 4-3 it was fantastic match but then, Elena lost her concentration and gave many gifts to Martina. the 2nd set was little weird in the first games but Martina was consistent while Elena made stupid desicions and missed many options to come back....

It was a close match, Elena missed lots of opportunities (break points/game points). Martina played great but very defensive.

Not much that I can add to this. This being clay, it was much harder for Lena to overpower Hingis from the baseline like she did at Tokyo. Hingis for the most reached Lena's shots in time and gave Lena few short shots and easy putaways. Having to play a few extra groundstrokes on each rally also increased the chances of a UE from Lena. Like at that first set vs Radwanska in Warsaw, Lena wasted one opportunity to break Hingis or to close out her own service games after the other. Regardless of what was at stake, Lena played each point exactly in the same way - hence needless UEs while going for winners on decisive points, when a more prudent approach would be the wisest course of action. Maybe she wasn't thinking and rather playing intuitively, to block out a possible choke? Lena is far from the most tactically sophisticated player out there, but this was poor even for her standards.

Those dropshots were stupid, and Lena got completely owned at the net (nothing new - this actually wasn't as bad as vs Schnyder at Paris indoors) - maybe because at the net you need to think fast, and Lena seemed to be on autopilot today.

Hingis played much better than vs Pennetta, used Lena's predictable, attackable serve and shot power against her, but was still mostly reactive.

Finally, on the reasons why clay isn't Lena's best surface, check this:

I watched the last few games (thanks to santhru), elena wasn't as on as in tokyo but martina was able to run down alot of balls and wrong foot elena... martina served pretty well too... actually both served pretty decently... Dementieva made only 2 DFs!

Clay is definitely not elena's best surface...

It's not Hingis best surface either. Rebound ace is. It's a pitty two of my favorites had to meet so early. Nonetheless, I wanted Hingis to get a break. Great win and too bad Dementieva had to lose.

Well, I'm less bitchy open reading that Hingis played well, but this was very winnable, still.

Drop shots? They were much too high and too long... a gift for Martina!

That's a bad loss by Elena. Not so much that she lost, but the fact that it was 3 and 2, on Elena's best surface, nad probably Martina's worst.

Clay and Elena's best surface?? Don't think so... My opinion: on HC she would have won against Martina today!

I didn't expect it, but it's not that huge a shock in itself IMO. However, it is impressive that Hingis was able to play so aggressively against someone who has beaten her three times in a row; or not, it might have been extra incentive for Hingis.

Steffica Greles, what is your definition of agression/aggressive? I think Hingis can be aggressive agauinst top players: it just doesn't mean blasting the ball. IMO Hingis being aggressive against the big hitters means scrambling to get balls back, hitting them deep, mixing it up, coming to net when she can, and staying positive and focused.
