View Full Version : Mr Bodo once again bashes Kim Clijsters

On the surface, there’s nothing really wrong with a top player trying to bring all her leverage to bear on the selection of a site and promoter - it’s part and parcel of the sacred “Me First” oath taken by most top players. But this is a two-superstar team, and you have to wonder what this bodes if Justine Henin-Hardenne has issues with either the promoter, the site, the surface - or just the transparent way Clijsters has left her fingerprints all over this decision?

We know is that a few months ago Justine took a pass on playing Antwerp, a Kim Clijsters lovefest masquerading as a WTA Tour event. We also know that Kim and Justine got along swimmingly during the recent Belgium "We Are Family" lovefest masquerading as a Fed Cup tie vs. Russia. Is Henin-Hardenne going to stand by and allow Clijsters to call the shots, or will this naked show of power by Clijsters stick in her craw?

Once again, Kim seems less like the earthy, happy-go-lucky milkmaid with the golden braids than the savvy operator trying to juggle and jigger things in the way that best suits her and promotes her interest and ambitions. Part of me is surprised because, frankly, Clijsters just never struck me as terribly bright (she certainly has never uttered a memorable line or phrase in a presser). But she appears to be infighting and exerting her influence as well as any corporate shark or PR fixer.

I don't get what the article is about, could someone please explain why Bodo is giving out about Kim? Peter Bodo is generally hit or miss, some stuff he writes is absolute rubbish other stuff I've really liked e.g Chris Evert-the cold and absolute fire. He says it as he sees it I guess.

On another front, I was amused to read this comment from just “Bill” beneath an earlier post (“Champagne Supernova”):

Pete,

You kill me! Champagne Supernova Kim?

Are you speaking about how she proclaimed that the Fed Cup SF (semifinal) won't include her if it's played on clay?

Then surprise, surprise it's now announced to be on indoor hard court in Belgium promoted by her buddy Bob V (Verbeeck), and to be played at a venue where her American boyfriend Bryan's basketball team plays games at. Yes, the lovely Ostend, Belgium up North.

Belgian Basketball League?! Believe it or not true.

Disclaimer! I’ve been trying to confirm the content of Bill’s comment without much luck, although it hardly seems like the kind of thing someone would make up. I’ll update you if it turns out that he’s got the facts wrong.

Well, to be honest Kim was choking again in the QF at the USO last year until Vee flat-out tanked and handed her the match. Very lucky.
Also she choked against Lindsay at RG last year, couldn't hit a forehand to save her life after 3-1 second set and had over 10 DFs.
Then at Wimbledon she DF'd 4 times in her last service game to lose to Lindsay. She was inevitably going to lose that one, but she still choked hard at a really big moment.

I truly do not understand why he is so negative about Clijsters and Justine all the time. He seems to take a sexist tone towards women in the WTA most of the time.

I truly don't think it will matter what surface Belgium chooses if they play the same US team that beat Germany. Both Belgians own Grand Slam title wins on hardcourt, and both have either won or made it to the Finals of the French.

I can understand Justine's reasons for not playing antwerp but he is undermining the tournement by saying it is just a lovefest for Kim, of course thye love Kim but the crowd during the Final in 2005 was amazing and is an important tourney. What it would have meant to Venus to win that diamond racket last year or how much it will mean to Amélie if she wins the tournement next year.
Is Paris indoors just a lovefest for Amélie, Zurich for Patty we could go on.

Why he disrepects other, saying that a player is not very bright is not very respectful.
Judged on what because of the comments she makes in press conferences, yeah compare that to Lindsay's comments and you can make that assumption but English is her first language and of course can sound more articulate than the players who are not speaking their first language.

For the rest of you, my excellent sources in Belgium (the need to remain nameless)sent me this intel as part of an email:

yes, Bob Verbeeck has been given the promotion rights to the Fed Cup semis. No, it hasn't been confirmed yet whether it will be played on hard court, but it is very likely it will be the case.

No, Ostend it isn't the home arena of Kim's husband Brian Lynch (in fact he's not her husband yet).

On the surface: Fed Cup captain Carl Maes is confident that Belgium can beat the US on any surface IF Kim and Justine play. Not only Kim, also Justine has said that it doesn't make much sense to play on clay between the grass and hard court season.

This said, I think you are absolutely right when you state that top players (including Clijsters and Henin) go too far by imposing their will on the organisation of Fed Cup ties. But to be honest, Kim has shown more loyalty to the Belgian team than Justine.

On the venue: It will be played in Ostend, in a basketball arena, but there is no link between Clijsters's boyfriend (who plays in Clijsters's home town Bree) and the Fed Cup organisation. It is simply one of the biggest and newest arenas suitable for indoor tennis (5.000 seats).

And it is true that Bob Verbeeck is a good friend of the Clijsters family, but he is the biggest sports promotor in Flanders, so it isn't really a surprise that he organises the tie. You have to know that in Belgium, Fed Cup and Davis Cup ties are organised on turn by the Flemish and Walloon (French speaking) federation.

My faithful correspondent also said that this is not really a big story in Belgium. And let me reiterate, it isn't a "big story" here at TW either. Just thought it would be an interesting subject for various reasons.

And in a country with two top players that are of about the same level, and with Antwerp being the biggest tournament in Belgium, this is very sad for Justine. The Antwerp tourni director is an idiot. No matter what his personal feelings were, he should have treated both Belgian players like queens. They are both stars and driving away either one of them would be an insanely stupid move. Justine did play Antwerp every year since 1999, she stopped playing it when she had to pull out due to an injury and BV decided to have a go at her publically over it. Despite the obvious Kim idolisation, I think she'd still be playing there now if it weren't made so obvious to her that she is not taken seriously or believed by BV. He should have been sacked over it. What are touni directors for if not to kiss the ass of the biggest draws to their tournament? If you're not prepared to do that, find another job.

As for Bodo calling Kim "not very bright"? Pot, meet kettle.I agree seems pretty nasty.

Hardcourt may play to Kim's advantage, but her logic about the difficulty of going from grass to clay in the midst of the runup to the hardcourt season makes sense to me. Maybe it is a bit self-surviving, but I don't see why she doesn't have a right to state her opinion and refer to the heighten injury risk with going to clay court.

In fact, he bashes everybody. It must be a pretty sad life to live, hating everything and everybody around you.

You've got to know Bodo's biases before you read anything he writes.

For instance,
Good: Becker, Goolagong, Evert, Seles, Wilander
Bad: Borg, Navratilova, King, Graf

Becker and Evert could beat a kitten to death, run over the child who owned that kitten, and then laugh at the parents' grief, and he'd still find some convoluted way to explain and excuse their behaviour, whereas a Borg or a Navratilova would get mercilessly bashed for, I don't know, jaywalking or the way they hold their fork.

Some of you people need to shut the fuck up about things you know little about, and instead read the numerous posts in this thread by people who do know what they're talking about, in which you would learn that Bodo bashes basically EVERYONE. And, you know, try to comprehend them and learn from them. If you can, of course.
That's almost Bodo-level patronisation.

I'm sure Kim won't be crying into her Alpro soya drink because of Mr Bodo's comments ;)

He's right. I never thought Kim was very bright either. And her ego does seem to have gotten ALOT bigger since she won the USO.

i think the complete opposite, i think she is the same woman that she always has been.

What do you mean by "kindest"? Is Kim a "kind" person? No, she isn't. You feel she is a kind/lovely/sexy girl, but in the end she doesn't look like she is. Just like Arantxa Sánchez. Everybody (except Spanish tennis connaisseur people) thinks she's a lovely person...

There aren't kind players. Don't be so childish please!
Huh? Kim's very kind, nice, always smiling, everything you want
Childish? What's the link between this and what I said?

Bodo is not a great journalist and has nothing interesting to say, so he just bashes players so people will actually pay attention to him. And clearly, it works.

Kim was lucky that venus choked and gave the match away so lindsay was twice lucky kim choked and gave the match away.
This proves it's all about luck in this game:p
