I decided to go to Berlin for two days to support Vera and co, because I have enough time at the moment. Travelling there was rather expensive as the "Deutsche Bahn" raises prices like every second but thanks to Paule22 I didnt need to pay something for a hotel or stuff ;)

Monday 08/05 Part 1

> Kids Day <
When Paul and me entered the courts there were thousands and thousands of small kids who profited from the Kids Day. It was really annoying, because it was loud and you felt a bit uncomfortable with all that damn kids around. Every person, be it a linesman, ballboy or a player who had a raquet on their backs were asked for autographs by the kids. Like flies they floated when they saw somebody with a tennis bag and it didnt bother them that they didnt know who it was they were requesting an autograph of. They got a signature on a white paper and when their parents asked them who signed for them they said that they dont know... at least they were happy. Poor Galina Voskoboeva was one of the first victims of the kids. I think all were happy when the kids left at 2pm)

> My personal stalker <
The first player I saw was Jarmila Gajdosova and it was not the last time we met. It seemed like everywhere I was she was also and everywhere she was I was there too. She was watching matches, practicing on the practice courts or fulfilling picture requests by people who recognized her just like me... She is a sweet girl :hearts:

http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/821/img0238vr.th.jpg (http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/821/img0238vr.jpg)

> Iveta, Iveta <
The first match Paul and me watched was Chakvetadze v Benesova. And Iveta played like shit - during long rallies she would always come up with the error. Anna on the other side played solid and hardly comitted any unforced error. It was a really one-sided match and I left when it was 61 11 in Anna's favor.

> thumps up for Ekaterina Bychkova <
I decided to get some impressions from the Bychkova v Smashnova match which lasted like forever. I came when it was 4-4 in the deciding set and the rallies lasted so long and Anna completely destroyed Katya in the end. A topspin on the FH, a wicked angle on the BH, a dropshot and so on - Katya was running all over the place and grunted desperately. After every point she looked like she would die and breathed heavily. Katya tried to make the rallies hort by hitting winners, but it failed too often and thats why she lost 46 in the third set. I felt sorry for her, because she fought so hard. When the kids came and asked her for autographs I expected her to not sign, but she signed every paper until the last kid was satisfied. Thumps up for that, Katya ;)

> what are you doing, Misa? <
I went over to watch the Krajicek v Bammer match. And Michaella played so bad! Her BH failed hundreds of times and her FH lacked pace and depth. She got completely outplayed by Bammer which means something, because usually Sybille brings the balls back and waits for opponents errors, but this time she was the one who was agressive and hit winners especially with her tricky FH. Only her serve prevented Misa to get a bagel or a breadstick! It was a really disappointing performance to say the least and I left after it was 63 31 in Bammer's favor.

> Battle of the qualifiers <
next match I wanted to see was Lisjak v Kremer. When I arrived Kremer had just won the first set 60. At the beginning of the second set Ivana started off very strong hitting winners all over the place and Anne was completely overpowered. Ivana hits very flat and with an amazing speed it when she is on she is a pleasure to watch. Also her serve is very powerful, but she tends to play the second serve with too much risk. I left at 06 30 to get me sth. to eat and when I came back it was 33. Ivana must have made a lot of errors! Second set was really close and at the decisive moments it was Ivana who made the error. Anne played nothing special, but what she played was good - hardly making any error, bringing everything back and playing some nice angles. Ivana was the better player out there, but she completely self-destructed in the end.

> Berlin's finest Kookie <
When I left the Lisjak match to get me sth. to eat Klara Koukalova came across. She was one of the players nobody noticed, because she didnt have a tennis bag on her back. At first I also didnt notice the small, blonde girl walking by but then I saw that its the Kookie. I asked her if I could make a picture and wished her good luck for tomorrows match. She was so shy, but so cute

> Daniela "Diva" Hantuchova <
Another player that came along was Daniela Hantuchova. Of course she was noticed, not only because of her tennis bag. But she played the diva and didnt fulfill any autograph or picture requests (at least I havent seen her doing it). I was a bit disappointed, because usually reports say that she is nice and stuff, but not this time.

> credits to Sabine <
I was pretty excited to see the Lisicki v Santangelo match, because Mara is one of my favourite players and I wanted to see what Sabine is all about. And I was really impressed! In the first set she completely overwhelmed Mara with her big powerful groundstrokes and her smooth serve. She was hitting a lot of winners on FH and BH side and there was not much Mara could do about it. Mara played her usuall stuff : big serve and agressive flat play, but everytime she came to the net Sabine did an amazing passing shot. When it was 63 10 for Sabine I was worried about Mara, but somehow Sabine lost the plot and made error after error. Mara raised her game and played with more confidence and the game completely turned around. It was a bit sad to see Sabine going down now, but I was happy Mara came through!

Monday 08/05 Part 2

> Maria Superstar <
no, its not about Maria Sharapova, but Maria Kirilenko. Everybody wanted to watch her in her match against Roberta Vinci (including Jarmila and Gisela Dulko&brother) and they were not disappointed. Makiri played some amazing stuff especially on her BH side. She would always come up with a BH winner and Roberta was not able to deal with it. Makiri was in control and kept Roberta away from the net with her groundstrokes. Second set went pretty fast in Makiri's favor and it took probably more time for her to sign all the autographs...

> Duo Infernale <
then it was time for the match between Dementieva/Pennetta v Sromova/Bondarenko. I had the luck to sit near mummy Dementieva  There is not much to say about the match. Hana (Sromova) could not handle the pace Elena and Flavia produced from the baseline, but she tried to play some tricky shots. Kateryna (Bondarenko) could handle the pace, but was making too many errors. Flavia and Elena were always in control and Elena just served one or two double faults. Nevertheless, all four enjoyed playing in front of a rather big crowd.

> Vera Dushevina <
ok, I decided ot watch a bit of the Dushevina v Garbin match so that I might rethink my opinion about Dushevina. But Vera played horrible stuff in the first set. Her second serve is by far the worst I have seen during the whole two days - its slow and short without any spin. Her Fh was also very erratic - many errors. Tax played very well in the first set and her trainers who sat left to me screamed "Forza" all the time. And right to me there was the Dushevina clan (including Voskoboeva and Bychkova who cheered for Vera). No surprise that Tax won first set 62 - then I left to watch the other Vera. I seriously dont know how Dushevina won the match after all :o Some more words about Garbin : she was always smiling at everybody and was very friendly overall! Even after she lost!

> My highlight of the day <
was definitely the match between Vera Zvonareva and Gisela Dulko. I was prepared for a drama, and I got it. Gisela played very well in the first set hitting many winners - she was in control of the match. The first reactions of Vera came at 0-2 and since then she was complaining about the court, throwing her racquet and talking to herself. She got back to 3-3 and held a GP, but was broken and lost the set. In the second set Gisela's level dropped dramatically and she made many errors especially on her FH side. Vera started to hit with more confidence and was going for her shots. She dominated the next two sets and Gisela didnt seem to have the ambition to fight. I was happy Vera won :D

oh, I forgot :o probably because I couldnt take any good pics, because I didnt get a seat on court 2 :(

> Kveta playin' well <
in the match vs Elena Vesnina, Kveta played really good! She hit her flat, powerful groundstrokes and Lena could not handle it especially when Kveta hit to her FH side. Elena has a good serve and beautiful floatin' groundstrokes, but in the decisive moments it was either Kveta hitting the winner or Lena making the error. Kveta was really happy after the match and was enjoying a drink in the "Biergarten" together with her husband Thorsten after the match.

Tueday 09/05 Part 1

> my oh my - Jelena <
first match of the day for me was Jankovic v Srebotnik. I wanted to see why Jelena loses all the time recently. In the first set, Jelena was playing good tennis though. Sending Katarina all over the place and hitting some winners with her BH. Srebotnik's backhand was the worst I have seen the whole two days! No pace and depth at all and she was comitting thousands of errors with it in the first set. In the second set things changed. Now it was Jelena's FH that broke down. She could not hit a winner with it, but just played the ball back with mid-pace. Katarina's BH was a bit better then and thats why she won in the end. Another poor performance from Jelena who seemed to be in a "I dont care if I lose" mood :o

> Vakulenko v Domachowska <
I left the Jankovic match to get some impressions from this match. Julia played very good. Her serve got her lots of free points and her FH and BH were flat and hard. Nevertheless, it was more Marta losing the match than Julia winning it. When there was a long rally it was usually Marta who went for the ultimate winner and failed badly. When she lost the first set 46 after coming back from 25 she started the tank mood - she didnt seem to care any more and made more and more errors.
Not that many people were watching this game, but I noticed Alina Jidkova was watching it. She was in Berlin and I saw her practicing once.

> Catalina is good < :yeah:
I went over to the court 1 to watch a bit of Castano v Klösel. I arrived when Catalina was down 26 21. I wonder how Cata could lose the first set, because she was in complete control of the match. She has smooth groundstrokes, especially her FH is beautiful when she is on. She was hitting a lot of winners and was totally outplaying poor Klösel who tried to resist by smart play. But Catalina was too good for her and cruised to a 26 61 61 win. I was really impressed by her!

> Laura Pous-Tío is an angel <
I stayed on the court, because I wanted to watch a bit of Pous-Tío v Likhovtseva. Laura is such a sweetie  Before the match she was always smiling and having fun and open for autograph and picture requests. Well, she didnt get too many as hardly anyone noticed her. In the match Laura had control over a strange Elena. Elena was really different from what I expected her to be - she was throwing her racquet, arguing with her coach etc. She played really poor and could not handle Laura's top-spin with her flat groundies. Once there was a false decision by the umpire against Laura, but she handled it so sweet with a smile. She won the match 64 63 and I was happy for her. As for Elena, she played really disappointing and was very unsatisfied with her performance.

> poor Tatiana Panova <
before I went to the Kookie match I wanted to get some impressions from the Medina Garrigues v Panova match. And it was so sad to see that nothing worked for little Tanya. She made error after error after error and was hopeless on the court. Anabel just needed to bring the ball in play and Tanya would make the error. I hoped that it would get better as the match went on, but Tanya didnt improve at all. She made a lot of DF's also. The few people watching the match felt very sorry for her. Hard to imagine Tatiana was Top20 one time... she lost 16 26 and was never seen again then.

> Kookie doesnt krumble <
The match came I was waiting for all day. I got myself a nice seat on court 2 and was unsure what to expect from the match Koukalova v Daniilidou. I was so happy Klara won 75 75, but as similar the scorelines for the sets are, they really were different. Set 1 was very good tennis from both players. Klara hit many winners with her hard and deep groundstrokes and Eleni played some tricky tennis and tried to be very agressive. When Kookie was down 45 00-30 on serve I feared the worst, but she made four consecutive Fh winners that made the crowd go "wow". She broke to love and served it out then. Second set was so much worse in terms of quality. Daniilidou took a "medical timeout" (it was obvious she just wanted to break Klara's momentum) and from that moment on there were hardly any winners. Daniilidou broke Klara right after the break to build up a 42 lead, but it seemed she didnt only broke Klara's rythmn but also her own as she served three consecutive DF's in her next service game. Her serve was overall very weak and was nearly as bad as Dushevina's. One thing was similar to the first set - Klara also needed to serve at 45 to stay in the set. This time she was not down 00-30, but 15-40 and again she managed to turn it around with some good shots. Kookie served out the match to love and she was really happy. She was smiling and signing autographs and when I walked past her I also got a gleamin' beautiful smile of her :hearts: too bad I had my camera put away :(

After the Kookie match I was eager to see what Li/Sun are all about in their match against Dushevina/Voskoboeva. And I was very impressed, but in a negative way. Li and Sun were playing almost exclusively from the baseline and only sometimes played serve & volley or chip & charge. Ting Li has big groundstrokes - her FH is just a bomb when she is on. She also was decent at the net and made 80% of the points for her team. Sun's groundstrokes are so weak. No pace at all and Vera and Galya overpowered her easily. When Sun tried to play some angles she failed miserably and the only thing that she was able to do was playing a lob from time to time. But overall she was the by far worst player on court. Li and Sun also didnt communicate much with each other - overall a poor poor performance from the gold medaillists. Vera and Galya played good tennis - Galya has a good serve. But as Sun would always come up with the error they didnt have to do that much.

> short rendez-vous with Patty <
after wasting my time with the doubles match I rushed back to the court 2 where Ani v Suarez was ongoing. I had to wait some time, because they just let people on the court during changeover and it was 2-2 when I arrived. Some seconds later I realized that Schnyder's husband was sitting in the crowd watching the match. I wonder where Patty was and this question answered itself when Patty Schnyder stood next to me also waiting for getting in. The game was quite long and Patty and I were standing next to each other like 5 minutes and I felt sth. special in the air. I used this opportunity to take a picture of her. After waiting for some time Patty called her husband with a creppy nickname which I forgot if it would take any longer and he said no. Indeed - me and Patty could enter some seconds later.

> Maret Ani - the italo-estonian <
During the two days I saw Maret several times and she was always together with a player from Italy - be it Vinci or Santangelo. I wonder why, but I got to know the answer soon when I entered the court of her match against Suarez. Some seats away there was the coach of Maret and he was from Italy - he was always cheering loud for Maret (Forza! Forza!) and she sometimes answered in perfect italiano. Roberta Vinci was watching this match also. Now to the match : Paola played good in the first set; her Fh was good enough the let Maret run all over the court. Her serve, however, was pretty bad. Maret has a huge FH, but her backhand lacks depth and Paola often made a winner after Maret got too short. The TB was really exciting and Paola won it after Maret choked a bit. I left after the Tb, so I dont know what happened to Paola.

> Vera/Meilen going down <
One of the last matches of the day was the doubles match between Zvonareva/Tu and Daniilidou/Medina Garrigues. This match was played on a court next to a practice court, but more to this later. Eleni and Anabel really played a nice doubles and Vera and Meilen made to many errors from the baseline. Meilen had many problems with the ball toss on her serve. She used to throw the ball to much in the front so that she was always late with hitting the ball and thats why she made many DF's. Vera sometimes had a nice passing shots, but it was not enough to really threaten Eleni and Anabel. During the match Svetlana Kuznetsova came and practiced on the court next to this one. She had a horrible boyish outfit on and together with her hair she really looked like a boy. She brought like 5 people with her on the court with who she chatted. She practiced with a male hitting partner and she grunted so loud - it was really annoying and disturbing. All people who watched the doubles match thought, that she russian boy on the other court should stop it. After Vera/Meilen dropped the first set I decided to go away, because a) it was not a good match and b) I was annoyed by Kuznetsova.

> Benesova/Krajicek v Srebotnik/Woehr <
Paul and me decided to watch the match, because we both have a crush on Jasmin Woehr and wanted to see her in action. Iveta and Misa waited for Katarina and Jasmin on the court and when they finally came Iveta said with a smile that they are late. the match itself was not that good despite some nice rallies. Woehr always plays serve & volley, because she didnt have any chance from the baseline - it sometimes worked actually. Kata played horrible (was probably tired from her singles match). Misa and Iveta were in control and never looked back. Both played better than in her singles on monday.

> the last match for me ... <
was Chakvetadze/Vesnina v Black/Dechy. I came at the beginning of the third set and it was a nice match to watch. Cara was always coming to the net and Lena and Anna tried to find a way to make the point. Nathalie played quite good at the net, so it was difficult for the russians to get a points when both Cara/Nat were at the net. But the russians did well on their own serve as they always kept Cara away from the net with powerful goundstrokes. I had to leave at 55 in the third set as I had to get my train back to my hometown.

But Paule wrote that Kata was consistent and that Jasmin was the worst. Kata should pick better partners than Wöhr.

of course, Woehr was the worst :p but the two games they won in the first set were both Woehr's service games. Kata played consistant, but sometimes being consistant is not enough. I thought she was a bit tired..

thanks all for your feedback :D :wavey:

by the way, does anybody know who Glen Shaap trains at the moment? He was there all the time drinking beer :o

LOL, Jasmin Wöhr was really really terrible. :o Especially at the net which is surprising since she's a doubles specialist.
Quite disappointing, maybe she just had a bad day. ;)

> Tzvetana Pironkova <
Although Tzveti was out already she stayed in Berlin to practice and watch matches. She was always in company with the black-haired guy and they were always sitting under a tree watching the matches on court4.

Meilen Tu was watching this match cheering a bit for Anne and giggling about the croatian swearing of Ivana. In this pic she is "enjoying" the interesting match.

> OMG Laura Siegemund <
I also saw a few points of the doubles match Salerni/Stewart v Siegemund/Laine and it was quite funny, because Emma and Laura seem like twin sisters. Laura again had this thing in her hair that made her look a bit :o She also felt like she was the No1 doubles player in the world - always screaming "Vamos" or making gestures like stiking out her tongue when she made errors, It was a bit funny to watch this over-confident girl. Emma Laine was hopeless at the net, but played some nice leftie shots. Pitu Salerni is a cutie! and Bryanne played some good volleys.

then it was time for the match between Dementieva/Pennetta v Sromova/Bondarenko.

That's Hana in a nutshell  Were you impressed by her? I admit she's in pretty bad form atm though

> Catalina is good <
I went over to the court 1 to watch a bit of Castano v Klösel.

:D :D

Thanks for the great reports Basti! :yeah: Glad u had a great time
