View Full Version : Most Missed Rivalry?

It seems like there are hardly enough players right now to have any type of rivalry on the tour...(the thing I think the tour most needs). Which of the most recent (and still possible to be revived) rivalries do you want to see most renewed, or continued?

For me it was Venus-Hingis ... but now it's Venus-Capriati. Or Seles-Capriati. Seles & Capriati vs. anyone.

I really miss Serena and Maria. You could tell in their last match that both of them knew what to expect and both of them DID NOT WANT TO LOSE! And really Maria didn't, Serena won. That's what made that match so promising! I hope they can continue to have high drama matches like that...with NO controversy (JEN, you KNEW that ball was in!)

I was looking at their H2H and in nearly all of her losses to Jen, Serena had at least at least one set, or it went to a breaker....Serena really should have won a lot of those...INC 2004 USO Quarter!

Serena/Jennifer needs to replace Serena/Justine in the poll.

Well, it's pretty clear that Venus vs Martina Hingis was missed. After that, Serena vs Jennifer Capriati.

But unless they've played at least ten times, it isn't a rivalry.

Its funny how most, if not all, the rivalries on your list are still in action and for the most part theyre not really rivalries.

I miss the Capriati vs. Serena, Seles vs. Capriati, and Seles vs. Graf.

Whichever of the examples...wta needs rivalry between all top players who need to get healthy at 1 time. It's not going to be easy though, but Berlin seems a strong field:)
In 2006 (quite similar to 2004) it is like whoever from top 10 is fitter wins finals of big events - examples: AO(JHH ret.), Paris(Mary injured), Antwerp(Kim returning too early), Miami(Masha exhausted after few, tough 3 setters)...AI, Charleston weren't even matches -Nadia played well, but Franny and Patty played terribly - how could you watch those matches and say they were COMPETETIVE exciting, high quality and dramatic etc...
It seems that the only finals this year which were played by both the finalists well enough to create a true tennis spectacle was Sydney and Dubai(1st set mainly), cos Tokyo, Doha and IW were too lopsided imho. Any of the rivalries will do great for wta tour. I'm waiting for Rome;)

I miss the Graf/Seles rivalry the most. It was just such a great matchup because they were both mentally exceptionally strong and total opposities in terms of playing style.

Maria Sharapova (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/shara/) and Vera Zvonarëva (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/zvona/) played four high-quality matches against each other in 2004, and are tied at 2-2, but they have yet to play each other since 2004.

It would be so cool if they could reconvene in the final of the French Open.

Jennifer should also have won a few but couldnt close it out. In Rome she had points for 4-1 final set lead, at RG 02 she was 6-3 6-5 and couldnt close it out.

i can't believe the starter of this thread didn't include SERENA vs. JENNIFER.

and then he goes and researches their H2H. what's the matter, afraid of admitting there's a rivalry between those two? it boggles the mind what the poster was thinking.

and, by the way, most of serena's losses to jennifer DID NOT include tiebreaks -- only the first few matches. and you forgot to point out that most of jennifer's losses to serena were also 3 sets.

it's amazing what jennifer does to some serena fans' psyche. note i said some, not all.
