OMG, it was really shocking how Flavia wasted the third setpoint against herself. Playing that dropshop at that moment was the worst decision she could take. Without that dropshop, the set could have gone her way also I think.
Anyway, well done Martina!

While it was nothing to really crow about, I would think that a comfortable straight set victory, 7-5, 6-3 over a player 5 places above you in the rankings, and who beat you last time out, is a pretty good win.

I think the match was quite good actually. Many nice points and Martina didn't do so many UE's... I just think both were too weak at their own service games... But overall a nice match with a lot of interesting points. Hingis was good from the defensive today, hitting many times on the line.

Martina is not in good form- If Flavia would not lose her concentration in few points she could win.

Not a very good match at all. Pennetta had moments of brilliance, but she was so inconsistent, and there were breaks flying all over the place...Hingis really needs to step it up a notch if she wants a chance at even reaching a QF here. :p

Yeah, but we should remember that the old Marti was ranked number one so she didnīt play against a top 20 player in first round. She got a bye in first round and a easy opponent in her second round.

the same above post for you  how jealous.. you all would have been celebrating if Hingis had lost  Despite she was not the favorite to win, as it was a rematch to a player that already had beaten Martina this year, and on her best surface which is clay for Flavia.

please  Despite ranking, I think the majority of people were expecting Martina to win this match anyway. And it is actually a compliment to Martina when I said I thought she'd be trashing her way through the early rounds at this stage. geez, I can't win  btw, why do you have to bring up Venus in all of your posts. Nobody here mentioned anything about Venus but you still bring her up anyway :o

Please? like last week Hingis was "supposed" to beat Venus  how ridiculous.
Penetta won 2 titles last year on clay, has reached 2 finals this year, took Schnyder to three sets at Roland Garros last year, beat Henin at Filderstat, so this player is no a pushover, you have to beat her, especially on clay which is her best surface.
Compare that to Hingis only 1 match win in 4 years on clay  how ridiculous.
Yes Hingis a huge favorite today

Its not a compilement at all donīt be hipocrite, you are acutally implying that Hingis had a so-so performance because she should have upset this higher ranked player easier than 7-5 6-3 and she did not

spencercarlos
May 9th, 2006, 10:08 PM
To be honest im surprised Hingis won this easy, after all Penetta had already beaten her this year, and after such ridiculous end of the match last week on Warsaw, i expected Hingisīs confidence should not that high in order to upset Flavia in two sets.

It was closer than the scoreline and IMO it could and should have gone to three sets...

I was there.

Not really impressed with Martina, quite a few errors and some her serves were :o first serves with 108 km/h :o
Flavia was nowhere near her best though, way too inconsistent. Quite a shame because else it could have been a real battle.

Martina :D! Well done, beating another player ranked higher than you. A nice run here and a top 16 seed at Roland Garros should be almost locked ;). Schruff shouldn't pose any major threats, and grudge match vs Dementieva in the 3r would be sweet .

Martina won! Even IF the score had been 7-5 7-5 she won and that is what counts. Some would still not give credit to Martina if she had won 6-0 6-0.

Keep up the good work Martina.

Hingis has got to get a serve coach. What is wrong with her? Why is her serve not looking any better? I just don't understand why she's not improving in this area.

That being said, congrats on the win Martina. We knew you'd win this. You served for the match the last time you played Pannetta, and then you got injured.

I think all this negative talk is a joke.

Hingis has just beaten a player ranked 18 in the world on her best surface in straight sets.

Seriously, Hingis will be top 10 by the end of the year....I think she'll take a bit of time to get used to the clay. It's been a while and I think it's become much tougher on this surface over the years she's been gone. The points require alot more patience and alot of more stamina than in the years where Hingis ruled the game. It's hard work but I reckon she'll get there.....Might even surprise a few people in this tournament by claiming a big name or two...

I sooooo wish Dementieva weren't on a collision course with Hingis in Round 3. She's a player that really gives Martina fits.

All this disappoint in Martina's performance only lays testament to the fact that everyone still regards Hingis as a top player.

Personally, I must admit I think she has yet to really get off her feet on the red clay. She has it in her, though.

Dissapointing?
Explain me where in the world a player faces 3 higher ranked players, beats two of them in straight sets and was just two points from beating the third one being an overall dissapointing performance on clay?..After 4 years of abscense? thatīs ridiculous/silly/idiotic i canīt find more words to describe your thinking (the ones who rates this performance dissapointing).
