View Full Version : Will injuries ruin Maria's career?

She seem to not play enough tournaments, and when she does she seem to pick up niggly inuries, and then theres her strains due to her growth spurts. Will these problems subside so she can commit to more tournaments so she can hold on to the No 1 spot when she reclaims it?.

Its worrying that she seems to play only 1 pre Gran Slam tournament so she never gets into a steady flow of form, its always stops and starts. If she were to play as many tournaments as say Hantuchova she would be No 1 now, with or without Gran Slam victories.

Maria plays more than enough tournaments. She just has a schedule that allows a couple reasonable breaks over the course of the year, which is a good way to go. The major chest/rib/shoulder problem that was troubling her for over a year has now improved a lot and that was the major cause for the lack of matches in the second half of last year. The other minor injuries she's been dealing with are something that most players would experience.
Maria knows how much tennis she can play before she gets worn down, she doesnt need to play the number of tournaments that some other players do...if you look at their end of year win/loss ration Maria generally plays as many matches because she stays in tournaments longer.

Where does this come from?

From this little injury? yeah her injury from last year was tough, but I don't think it effects her schedule.

and she plays enough tournaments, I think this break after Indian Wells and Miami was a good thing to do, if she would play as much as Hantuchova she would be exhausted, because Maria does get deep in draws a lot.

i thought her schedule is reasonable and she choses the right tournaments.. i wouldn't want her to play almost every tournament just so she can gain points to be number 1.. she can do that when she's successful in the tourny and get deep in draws as she does now.

I am actually happy with her schedule, I think a lot of players play too much (and as a result have inflated rankings) I would be more concerned if she were playing all the time like Hingis used to do.

I think Maria's schedule is about right this year. The lighter the better, especially considering her recent injury problems, rest is important.

nice kittens btw :)

I agree, I would be worried also if she played too much, this schedule is good for someone of her age, she doesn't need to play that much, but I do think she does play enough tennis

Maria has a terrific schedule which gives her both physical and mental breaks from tennis which is a great thing, a lot of girls could follow that lead. I think it will help in giving her a long career if she wants it.
