That 2 handed both sides player revealed in 2001 reaching the SF at Bali in 2001 at the age of 15 for her 1rst WTA tour event! then she had to strugle with injuries. Since last year, she's been back full time on the pro circuit. She's up this week after reaching the SF at Gifu $50K challenger. She lost to surprising eventual winner n°279 Erika Takao in 3 sets.

Romina OPRANDI:
The italian girls are flurishing in the world ranking...and Romina is one of the girls who is progressing quickly. She won $25K Torrent as Top seed without dropping a set and without losing more than 3 games in a set! In Final she overpowered unseeded n°295 Ekaterina Makarova

Mary and Lindsay are up one place this week because Justine HENIN HARDENNE didn't play in Varsaw last week (tournement that she won in 2005)
Elena DEMENTIEVA n°8 (+1): Elena overtakes Patty Schnyder with a SF at Varsaw Tier II falling to Top seed and eventual winner n°2 Kim Clijters whereas Patty lost in the early round to n°20 Ana Ivanovic in straight sets.

Venus WILLIAMS n°12 (+1): Venus is up one place this week. Venus doesn't play a lot on the tour but when she plays, she's making the show...with on e of the most thrilling match of the week vs her former rival n°25 Martina Hingis. She won against her and against pain in that match before falling in QF to eventual Finalist 4th seed/n°10 Svetlana Kusnetsova.
Flavia PENNETTA n°18 (+1): The n°2 of Italy is battling to stay in the Top 20. She's up one spot this week after a SF at Estoril Tier IV 140K losing to unexpected winner of the tournement 6th seed/n°49 Jie Zheng.

Anna CHAKVETADZE n°27 (+7): After half and a year outside of the Top 30, Anna is back...3 places from her best. She reached the 2nd SF of her career at Varsaw Tier II $600K ousting 9th seed/n°16 Daniela Hantuchova en route before falling to 4th seed/n°10 Svetlana Kuznetsova.

TOP 100:
Tsvetana PIRONKOVA n°66 (+13): As a LL, Tsvetana reached the 2nd round of the main draw beating n°30 Katerina Srebotnik (dropping only 2 games) before losing to 4th seed/n°10 Svetlana Kuznetsova.

TOP 150:
Julia VAKULENKO n°147 (+36): Another good week for Julia who is back in the Top 150. At Varsaw Tier II $600K, she run to the 2nd rd of the main draw as a qualifer with a victory over qualifer n°103 Emanuelle Gagliardi before falling to Top seed n°2 Kim Clijters.

TOP 200:
Tatania PEREYBINIS n°191 (+45): More than 3 years ago, Tatiana finished the year as a Top 80 player. She's back in the Top 200 after more than 1 year outside. At Varsaw Tier II $600K, she made it to the 2nd round of the main draw. I the qualies, she ousted 6th seed/n°100 Melinda Czink and 9th seed/n°120 Meilen Tu. In the main darw, she continues her run beating qualifer n°139 Galina Voskoboeva before losing to 3rd seed/n°9 Elena Dementieva.

Like most of us, I think that qualiy poins rule was good and fair. It's not the same to reach a second round beating a Top 30 player than beating someone around 100...but you know it's just a question of financial aspect: It pushes girls to play more tournement than before...the more you play, the best average ranking point you have.

Well, I think that they could reach the Top 100 even if it's harder to jump from Top 150 to Top 100 than Top 200 to Top 150. It'll also depend on the type of tournements they decide to commited in.
There're really 2 types of strategy...some girls much prefer to play on the ITF Tour and even weak challenger to earn as much points as they can: Jarmila Gajdosova for instance played the Oceanian Challenger Tour after the AO...she was most of the Time the Top seed of these 25K Challenger and earned a lot of point...she's now Top 100
Some girls much prefer to compete on the WTA Tour....but it's harder to make points because the competition is much tougher and the number of points they've got in the qualies is small.
