I voted for African, but the answer is really both. Africa is the continent and the Middle East is the region, it's like Denmark for example, people from there are both Scandinavian and European.

I agree, However....Egyptians think they are beyond the continent. And that's a general consensus. For me...THEY ARE AFRICAN!

Politics-wise, they are Middle Eastern.

Geographically speaking, I guess they belong to Africa.

you'll find they'll describe themselves as Arabs more than middle-eastern or African.

Why do they have to "be" anything in some simple way? Egypt is in Africa. It has people who tend to be of a certain phenotype. It has a certain cultural history. If you're asking whether it has more in common culturally with the Middle East or with Sub-Saharan Africa, I'd say the Middle East. What further fact do you want to know?

I had a friend from egyptian origins (pretty sure he's born in Canada) and he told me he didn't consider himself to be african or really part of Africa.

I couldn't believe it, at the time :tape:

As a people, Egyptians are really quite diverse. Some are white, some Arabic, some black. Politically North Africa is separated from the rest of Africa, and they're really looked at very differently. North Africa is usually grouped with the Middle East in larger terms. Of course, geographically Egypt is in Africa (and you could maybe argue that the Sinai is in Middle East/Asia). Egypt has been controlled by so many diverse groups, from Nubians to Greeks to the British. Nice country. :D

The question is why is it considered 'Middle East' when it is in fact in Africa;) Of course the easy and obvious answer is the cultural (Islamic-Arab) makeup of the current people.

actually you raise a valid point, and i agree...why do they want to be seen as middle eastern? probably b/c of the Arabic-Islam faiths? i don't know.

It's not exactly period because "period" seems like excluding the Middle Eastern part, They are indeed both, like they are Mediteraneans too ;).

You don't need to speak to an Egyptian to say that, you only need to spot Egypt on a map ;)

It's like me saying I'm Eastern European.

Anyway... I think Marocs say they are Arabs as well. Somebody pointed the Arab word out. I think that is the correct way of saying it.

 Not exactly.

It's more like I'd say I am European and from the Balkans. The Danish example someone gave is very good too.

Egyptian Coptics do not consider themselves Middle Easterners so far as I know.
