Kudos to every who figured out they probably weren't going to like the answer to that question.

Volcana - im surprised you failed to mention that Liberia has just about the lowest life expectancy of all of them. I dont read enough about other nations to speak with much authority.... but isnt Liberia the nation that was created to take in emancipated Afro American Slaves? If so, isnt it sad that liberia has such a low life expectancy?

Liberia, which means "Land of the Free", was founded by freed slaves from the United States under the supervision of the American Colonization Society in 1820. These Americo-Liberians established a settlement in Christopolis, soon renamed Monrovia, after U.S. president James Monroe, president of the Society, on February 6, 1820. This group of 86 immigrants formed the nucleus of the settler population of what became known as the "Republic of Liberia". Lt. Robert F. Stockton of the U.S. Navy helped negotiate a treaty with the natives that led to the founding of the new country.

The idea of resettling free slaves in Africa was nurtured by the American Colonization Society (ACS), an organization that governed the Commonwealth of Liberia until independence. Between 1817 and 1867, 13,000 freed slaves arrived with the help of the Society, leading to the formation of more settlements and culminating on July 26, 1847 in a declaration of independence of the Republic of Liberia. The style of government and constitution was said to be fashioned on that of the United States. The new Republic of Liberia adopted other American styles of life, including southern plantation-style houses with deep verandahs, and established thriving trade links with other West Africans. The Americo-Liberians distinguished themselves from the local people, characterized as 'natives,' by the universal appelation of "Mr."

Yup. Also, it's certainly one of the best governed, and has a wealth of natural resources to exploit.

The only thing I can think of is that it has a huge AIDS rate.

EDIT: Swaziland also has a massive AIDS prevalence rate, so that has a huge bearing on the life expectancy of the African nations at the very bottom.

I very rarely criticize my home nation. I was only saying that it is sad that Liberia, like the Dominican Republic, both nations whose purpose was to be a home for freed slaves, are amongst the poorest nations in the world, and have low life expectancies. How can any "compassionate" person not find that disappointing?

It´s hard to say. Because country´s like Costa Rica which haven´t got an army have a ´high´ life-expectancy but they have a GDP which is far below the average.

Have you been to Singapore? Say what you like about its government paternalism, and I'll probably agree with you. But it's "feel" is much like a big Australian city, complete with miles of parks, gardens, beaches, etc. In many ways it's like a paradise. The streets are no more crowded than those of Brisbane, for example, and it's nowhere near as polluted as a lot of other modern cities.

I'd say the life expectancies of HK, Sing and Macau are linked to rate of obesity, since heart disease is the biggest killed in Britain and there are far fewer obese people in those countries than in other Western civilisations.

What I can't work out is why we're supposed to not like the answer to the question. If the answer is "no", so what? If it's "yes", I'm really pleased for Andorra.

Interesting stats. But to me, there's not much difference between living to 77 and living to 83 (which is the gap separating #1 and #50). Then again, I don't plan on growing old. :p

Also, I don't like seeing so many countries with life expectations below 75, but I guess it's not unsurprising. Hopefully that will change for the better.

It's because of the condition of the average man in my country. 90% of the wealth belongs to 5% of the population (well, those aren't exact figures, but you get the picture). There's a lack of awareness of hygene and health and social services. The regular man has to deal with additional stress of being harassed by corrupt government officials whether they be police officers or tax collectors. It's not an easy life.

i dont think you can have an all around best country, just like you cant have an all around best city. its like different people what different things. some people are ok with not living to 80 but i doubt they really mean that so they would want to be somewhere were its close enough. others want, lots of green and natural, earthy things, still others just want to be in power and want to be somewhere were there is a good chance they get to control others through servitude or some other means. and so on and so on

Life-expectancy ratings should be based on wealth and environment, not on country. There are areas of the United States that probably have lower life-expectancy than areas of Swaziland. It just depends on your situation.

the truely fucked up thing is that the life expectancy for men in russia is considerably lower than for women - it's 59.91 for men and 73.27 for women. no other country compares to russia in this regard.

the last un development report attributes this to alcoholism and drug abuse among the poor males.

The usually has, cause they don't count the small countries in, in the most researches. But now they did.
