Out for 6 weeks, first England match is exactly 6 weeks away.

Sven will (should) still take him in the hope that he'll be fit for the knockout rounds but its a massive blow.

Totally gutted.

i admire Rooney greatly (when he plays for England :p) but remember what happened with Beckham in 02?
even though Rooney is a wayyyyyyyyy better and more influential player than Beckham was in 02, taking a guy with a broken foot is a huge risk. :(

it's funny how British people say "England HAVE no strikers fit" instead of "England HAS no strikers fit". Sounds totally wrong to the American ear.

Seriously though we are cursed! :scared: You never hear of the big players getting injured at the end of seasons where they just have a summer holiday to look forward to, it's only when we have a big tournament coming with England that the major players go and get injured :fiery: It's David Beckham 2002 all over again  I blame Chelsea for injuring him   ;)

Still I'd take him to the World Cup cos you never know he could heal quickly

Of course, the Americans had to go and add their own spin to our language! . Seriously ours is probably the correct way but from region to region in Britain, the English language can change alot in the verbal form because of the different dialects and accents.

Let's take this opportunity to peruse England's hapless bunch of potential strikers.

Name (Age; Club: club goals this season; England career record) - comment

Alan Shearer (Age 35; Newcastle: 14 goals; England: 63 caps, 30 goals) - definitely retired now
Michael Owen (Age 26; Newcastle: 7 goals; England: 75 caps, 35 goals) - possibly injured
Wayne Rooney (Age 20; Man Utd: 19 goals; England: 29 caps, 11 goals) - injured
Robbie Fowler (Age 31; Liverpool: 4 goals; England: 26 caps, 7 goals) - old; hasn't played for England since 2002
Darius Vassell (Age 25; Man City: 10 goals; England: 22 caps, 6 goals) - good player, poor form
Emile Heskey (Age 28; Birmingham: 5 goals; England: 43 caps, 5 goals) - poor form for years
Joe Cole (Age 25; Chelsea: 9 goals; England: 30 caps, 5 goals) - scores goals but usually plays midfield
Peter Crouch (Age 25; Liverpool: 12 goals; England: 5 caps, 1 goal) - has started scoring but not good enough!
Jermain Defoe (Age 23; Spurs: 8 goals; England: 16 caps, 1 goal) - streaky form, not prolific striker
Shaun Wright-Phillips (Age 24; Chelsea: 0 goals; England: 8 caps, 1 goal) - is he injured or just never picked?
Alan Smith (Age 25; Man Utd: 1 goal; England: 16 caps, 1 goal) - broken leg
Darren Bent (Age 22; Charlton: 22 goals; England: 1 cap, 0 goals) - inexperienced but prolific
Andy Johnson (Age 25; Crystal Palace: 17 goals; England: 2 caps, 0 goals) - no int'l experience
James Beattie (Age 28; Everton: 11 goals; England: 5 caps, 0 goals) - no int'l experience
Kevin Phillips (Age 32; Aston Villa: 5 goals; England: 8 caps, 0 goals) - poor form for years

Currently Sven's first choice strikers seem to be Rooney, Owen and Crouch, with possibilities for Bent, Wright-Phillips, and Defoe. Cole gets picked too, but in a midfield role.

Assuming the worst case scenario (neither Rooney nor Owen are fit to play in the World Cup), I say England's best options up front are 2 out of Cole, Bent and Defoe. With possibly Vassell and Beattie as subs. I am not a fan of Crouch - whenever I see him score a goal it appears to be hugely flukey. The problem is that these strikers are all players who are fast and like to run with the ball and shoot from the edge of the area. There is not so much potential for their usual style of play based on width and crosses. England would have to change their style of play, but teams like South Korea and Denmark have shown that it is possible to do well with a front line based on speed.

Whatever way you look at it, England seem to be quite screwed if Rooney doesn't recover. The only thing that can save them is their midfield - with players like Lampard, Gerrard and Cole on the pitch there is always the possibility for goals (Gerrard and Lampard are both their clubs' top scorers). Perhaps a 4-6-0 formation would fit the bill? ;)

Damn it... I KNEW THIS WAS COMING....

World Cup 2002... Beckham broke his Fourth Metatarsal through a challenge by Aldo Ducher... he recovered in time, but never realised his full potential in the tournament and lost to Brazil... :(

World Cup 2006... Rooney breaks his Fifth Metatasal through a challenge by Paulo Ferriera... and now might not play in the World Cup after all..

Jeez... what is with England and broken Metatasals? England must have been cursed not to win the World Cup anymore since the victory in 1966....

I'm sorry but I'm not going to give football fans a pat on the back for improved behaviour when they should be getting an almighty bitch slap for bad behaviour.

Every time someone goes abroad wearing, or waving a St Georges cross they are representing our country, and in the name of football so much shame has been brought upon us. People don't notice the nice English fans who go out cheer football and come home. Unsuprisingly it's the trouble makers and riots that grab the attention of the worlds media and that's what we're judged on. Regardless of whether these thugs are in the minority, these are the people that everybody sees, and they ruin it for everyone else.

I don't see fans of any other sport behaving in such an appalling manner.

If Rooney doesnt make it: Owen, Bent, Defoe and Harewood

In my opinion Harewood and Bent deserve it so much more then Crouch they have been lethal this season Crouch has just been a beam pole that cant header with power or prescion due to his height. And Defoe has been treated unfairly at Tottenham

If we are without Rooney or Owen I'd go for a system like this (4-4-1-1)...

Striker: Owen/Rooney

Supporting striker: Gerrard (doing best Rooney impression)

Midfield: J.Cole, Lampard, Carrick (holding), Beckham

Defence: A.Cole, Terry, R.Ferdinand, G, Neville

Goalkeeper: Robinson

If both Rooney & Owen are both out, then we are indeed fuct.

Not sure we can afford to take two unfit strikers to the WC, but we can definitely afford to take one. Its harsh on Owen but we'd have to take Rooney because he is irreplacable. Jermaine Defoe can do a passable impression of Michael Owen, but we have no-one to replace Rooney.

Come on. I'm gutted, but not delusional. Excellent players for sure, but no way you can say that we have more match-winners than brazil (though if they lost ronaldinho they'd be fucked too!). We need Rooney and Owen up front or we lose the edge. I'm not sure Ronaldo will even get a place in the starting eleven!

I know what you're saying but we'll be taking five strikers so we can afford to risk one (Rooney) & still have enough cover.

He won't play in the group stages, but its not unreasonable to think that he could be in decent enough shape for the start of the knockout stages in 8 weeks.

However, if he's still obviously struggling & not match-fit by then (a la Beckham in 2002), he should not play.

Maybe if there was a restriction on the number of foreigners who can be fielded in Premiership matches, we wouldn't have this problem. For example, did you know that out of the 84 goals scored by Arsenal in all competitions this season, only 2 came from English players? Maybe if there weren't so many foreigners, players like Andy Johnson would be able to establish themselves in the Premiership and become serious England candidates.

Who gives a fuck?

English footballers are too expensive, thats why Wenger buys far cheaper and equally good players from abroad.

And Arsenal do have Campbell and Cole, who would be in the first team if they weren't injured all the time (seems to be a trend with English players....).

Sven has said Rooney will be going to the World Cup even if he wont be fit until the knockout stages, if they make it, also great news is Owen is fine, his scan showed no damage so he will be going also to the Finals.

Joe Cole could play the Rooney role, with the young lad Lennon playing Coles role on the Left. Failing that Fowler is an exciting option.

Things are sounding more promising. I'd definitely take Lennon, but I'd shift Gerrard into the Rooney role until the he regains fitness. That would allow us to play a more balanced midfield with Carrick holding & allowing Lampard to get forward.

When Lampard & Gerrard play together in the centre of midfield we waste their attacking talents because they end up unsure whether to attack or defend - as a result they do neither effectively.

Lampard and Gerrard are both utterly awesome. They create lots of chances for team mates, and score plenty of goals themselves. They're both very complete midfielders, and the England team is incredibly lucky to have them. (And I say this as an Arsenal fan!)

And Joe Cole has come on a long, long way in a few seasons. He's top class.

I think England have a defence and midfield that is on a par with any other international team. The strikers are ok too. So I don't really understand why they are such a shite, boring team to watch, and why they don't seem to gel as a team at all.

Rooney does have the ability to deliver the unexpected, but I do think he is somewhat over-rated...

There IS a player with a similar capacity for brilliance, with the ability to skip past defenders and score wonderful goals...

Who?

Shaun Wright Phillips!

While Shaun has looked a shadow of his former self at Chelsea, this has largely been due to his limited oppourtunties and a manager who seems to lack faith in him.

At my beloved Man City, SWP wreaked havoc on opposing defences, scored wonder goals with regularity, and ghosted past quality defenders like they weren't there. He is much missed.

If he can recapture that form, than he can win the World Cup for England. Given half a chance. Which he won't be.

I'm sick of Rooney full stop.

I'm of seeing his ugly fucking face and his ugly **** of a girlfriend in the papers everyday.

I'm sick of hearing how England are doomed without him when he scored a grand total of ONE goal in Englands qualifying games.

I'm sick of seeing him doing ridiculous, dangerous fouls and injuring his opponents.

I'm sick of seeing him swearing like a fucking jackass everytime the ref gives a decision against him.

I'm sick of reading about his visits to brothels, to fuck grandmas and other whores.

I'm sick of hearing about his brothers acting like Neo-Nazis.

I'll be supporting England because I'm English, but if we fuck up I don't care, because frankly, Arsenal doing well means MUCH more to me then England doing well.

And don't EVER try to claim Rooney is better than Henry. Henry is the Champions Leagues third highest all time scorer, Henry has won the golden boot countless times, as well as the European Golden Boot, Henry has won the World Cup and Euro Championships, as well as league titles and other trophies, Henry is record goalscorer for his club, Henry is the third highest scoring player in the history of the Premier League, only behind players who have been playing in the league longer than him. Henry is a living legend.

Zidane wasn't amazing at 18, and look at him now. Some footballers are late bloomers, and Henry is hardly old.

And most importantly, Henry is a decent human being, not a fat, obnoxious wanker like Rooney who gives this country a bad name. Rooney doesn't deserve to kiss Henry's ass.

I seem to recall that YOU mentioned Henry first, so if you don't want me to talk about him, don't fucking bring him up in the first place.

And why does being an avid supporter of the leading striker of my main football team have any bearing on my loyalties and nationality?
