My friend has brought back from Spain (according to her) the strongest *absinthe known to man. Going drinking it tonight, I've never tried it before what should I expect?

*For those who don't know Absinthe is a dangerously strong drink, what we are having is over 85 or 90% strength and it is known to cause the drinker to hallucinate and has other wierd effects-which I would like to know before I down my first shot.

One word of wisdom: Don't.

First of all it is a lie (the strongest Absinthe is brewed in Switzerland by tradition), and second you'll lose a lot of precious brain cells. Sorry to be a spoil sport - but it tastes like shit and it is just not worth it.

is that the one that's banned in the US?

I had a smell of it last night and it did not smell right!! I heard that about Switzerland and the purest form of it is brewed in Andorra as well, my friend picked it up in Barcelona. I'm thinking of chickening out or at the most having a thimble sized shot-a few whiskeys should suffice instead.

Yep. And it used to be banned in Switzerland. And almost everywhere else. Too many people died.

But that didn't keep anyone from :drink:

people died? OoooK! It is illegal in Ireland and in Britain as well as far as I know. Well if I do try a little or stay sober enough to observe my friends I'll let you know tommorrow what it was like.

It's actually legal in the UK. It's a myth that it's not.

It is definitely not available in Ireland, the only we ever get it-well the strongest stuff is if someone goes to France or Spain. Never heard of anyone trying to bring it back from Britain, is it because the strength in Britain is lower than on the continent?

Depends on how the brand it is brewed and if it got an official certificate. The "Green Fairy" is legally in a lot of European countries now, but was forbidden for decades.

Yep.

If you never had it try it, but keep in mind that it is - if not watered down - much stronger than a regular drink. And the others taste better, let me assure you.

But - it has a huge fan base in Switzerland. And their brew ain't got no certificate.

Just for fun, do quick google of "absinthe" and "myth" - or read this, especialy the last few paragraphs: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/6/story.cfm?c_id=6&ObjectID=10357523

It can have a really high alcohol content though, so make sure you eat first and don't plan on driving anywhere.

Exactly. To my knowledge, you can still get the original Absinthe in Spain but in other european countries such as Germany you get a lighter version of it which does no harm whatsoever (well apart from still being alcohol).

I am not sure about the whole process but the absinthe you can buy legally in most countries now is definetly not the same as decades ago due to which all the legendary stories came up in the first place.

Ive only drank the German one which is imported from some other european country. Its green, it tastes like licorice, its strong but not as strong as the Spanish one (like 50% alc.). Once I drank a whole glass of it along with two cocktails. I fell asleep in two seconds when we returned to the hotel and woke up a few hours after that with a horrible headache and absolutely felt sick. However, it would have the same effect with other alcoholic stuff.

As long as it is the legal one, you shouldnt worry about weird hallucinations or whatever but dont drink too much :tape:

Don t worry!

I m drinking absynth for a few years and I m still ok ;)

You can find it in Czech Republic, Slovakia or Poland
I m not sure it s the strongest but who cares? the one I ve got at home has 65%, you have the red one(chemical and uggly), or green and blue, which you can find in every pub, it s quite tastefull, my favour goes to drink it with a sugar and I light it in the glass, but don t drink with the fire !

I try the spanish one and it s really disgusting :fiery: tasting like nothing, just something to vomit...

so come to us and try again!

Na tvoje zdravie!

I do not consider it as a drink really. Just an easy way to get drunk.

I tried it some weeks ago.

-I had been drinking about 3 beers before, and then my friend had taken some absinthe with her (we were at a club) so we drunk the absinth which was around 3 shots for each one. We later drank one more beer. I couldn't really feel that I was drunk, so... I remember I was dancing and listening to the music, then I went to the toilet and I don't remember anything else, except a friend calling me to say my other friend (who had brought the absinthe) was really worried and thought I had ended up in a random bed. I then told her that I was at the left toilet with puke all over me, and that I had been sleeping for about 3 hours.
She came back and helped me get home.

Morale: It's really strong. I did not feel it right away, but it can be bad. The alcohol percent was about 80 % I think... I was later told that people had tried to call me and that I had actually answered the phone and later hung up. People outside the toilet had been knocking on the door (luckily, there's 3 ladies toilets there), but I had just kept on sleeping, though I do remember now that I heard the voices and felt my phone vibrate...
Just be careful and don't be surprised if you get a hangover!

I find it amusing that a lot of European countries won't allow absinthe to be sold locally, but can be produced for export. :p

The Absinthe Report.

What a night and you could say that it has just finished over 24 hours later! When we finally got one friend to stop vomiting!

Anyways I'm fine because I got to the party late (at about 11.30) and only had a few Guinness and one shot of the stuff. One shot was more than enough. The stuff burns the insides, its like a million shots off sambuca-drinking floor polisher couldn't be worse. I staggered out onto the balcony and gasped for air and thought I was on fire! Well I wasn't going to chance anymore after that. My friends at that point were plastered on the stuff and were going completely berserk. Biting people (my face), coming onto everyone(who they really shouldn't have been coming onto), trying to climb over the balcony, screaming at the top of their voice, not being able to stand, vomiting everywhere, writing all over their bodies and the walls, licking the TV, tearing off their clothes, licking and chewing the furniture and eventually they passed out. This morning they couldn't remember one single thing from the night before- I asked them did they think they hallucinated but the night before was a complete blank but from my observations that drink is fucked up and I would say yes they went somewhere far beyond drunk. I mean we get up to high jinks a lot of the time when we've been partying, these girls are drinking buddies of mine and are well able to handle alcohol but last night they were off their heads and today they were violently sick all day and one of them is still throwing up. So my assessment of absinthe is I wont be trying it, my friends have certainly vowed to never touch the stuff again but overall it was an extremely interesting experience.

^ Sounds like a crazy time! Ur ladies friends seemed to let the reputation of Absinthe take them to a crazy place. Often when something is guaranteed to F u up it gives u licenses to go crazy.

Good for u for trying it out. The hangover part sounds really bad.

I know what you mean about when something has a reputation but I honestly don't think the drink had a placebo effect-they went completely spa and can't remember a thing :D The hangover is definitely nothing to laugh about!

The absinthe you buy in the offies over here (ie in the UK) is legal, of course. Someone bought me a bottle a few years ago (can't imagine why  ) and it was okay provided you didn't drink too much of it. Basically its like very strong tasting pernod/ouzo. I only drank one at a time, diluted with lots of water. If you drink it tequila slammer style, of course you will be in trouble!

The moral is, everything in moderation children ;)

Oh it is legal and available in Ireland! Why, just this tuesday past, I had a little shot of absinthe when I was out in a club in Belfast. It tastes pants, but don't all shots?! If anyone died from drinking it, they must have just gone overboard on the drinking and had just a tad too much.

And no, it has never made me hallucinate. lol.

Yes, I know Belfast is in N.Ireland, thanks ;) lol but I've had absinthe in three different places down south so it's unlikely it is illegal.

Well I don't exactly know if it is the real absinthe, which was forbidden in whole Europe long time ago. But the fake was always 'allowed' here in the Netherlands. And even a few years ago the real one was legalized again.

If you drink you should drink the green one, it's the best by far. But I shouldn't advice anyone to drink it pure. But if you light it, and you like it then it's nice.

I tried some Black Absinthe which someone had bought in Turkey (I think...somewhere like Turkey at least ;) ) and that was 85% strength, may have even been in the 90% range. But to be honest I didn't really have any problem with it at all, I mean it tasted horrid and I certainly wouldn't be able to drink large amounts but 2 shots was fine and the burning sensation as you swallowed was actually quite pleasant in a weird way! ;)

Ah my foul-tasting shot of choice is usually Jagermeister or Goldschlager although I actually don't find them foul-tasting at all! ;) They're especially good if you mix a shot of each together to create one big Goldjagerschlager, mmm mmm ;)

On a sidenote, I also hate Xmas cake and have never tried poteen version either ;)

I don't know exactly but Henri-Louis Pernod was the first one who brew for commercial goals. But I dunno he's french or not, he bought the recipe in Swiss, according to wikipedia.
