I think I will be in LA in July but probably won't be able to do much because I am going to be at a conference. However, is there anything in downtown L.A. to do? How far is like the Kodak theatre and all that stuff? Is it safe to walk around downtown La. I think the conference is at the Convention center and we'll bve staying at the Wilshire or the Sheraton downtown. Can anyone fill me in?

omg, don't go downtown after sunset. The place is deserted after work lets out and then the scum comes out. :scared:

Stick to the touristy areas. Avoid Sunset and Hollywood Blvds (past the chinese theater) after sundown :scared:

and avoid Compton, Inglewood, South Central, Watts, East Hollywood, and parts of Long Beach. :scared:

actually I think the closer to the coast you get the better  East LA ... :scared:

For heaven's sake, don't go out alone if you're staying downtown. I'd stay locked up in my room at night or find something to do in the hotel.

Yeah, when people say they live "in LA," they usually mean in smaller cities AROUND L.A. As for L.A. itself and the downtown area, stay stay stay away and do everything in the daytime.

The Kodak and Mann's Chinese, etc are in Hollywood, which isn't downtown, but it's a close visit. If you driving, you can just head up the 101 N to H'wood or if you don't have a car, you can take the Metro up to Hollywood. I wouldn't advise it if you are alone after about 9-10 pm at night (as a woman anyway), but it's safe enough in a group. The main problem is the huge homeless population (largest in the world so I've heard) panhandling and sleeping it off on the Metro trains. Sounds fun, huh? Seriously, it is a fun place. The Kodak is in Hollywood and Highland, an outdoor shopping center. Mann's Chinese Theater is within walking distance. You should also try out Universal City (also off the 101 freeway) and the Santa Monica Pier area (W on the 10 freeway to the beach).

Just carry an anti-tank weapon, or something, and you'll probably be okay.

You guys are such drama queens. I love downtown LA. Just don't go walking around alone at night and you're fine. You shouldn't do that in downtown anywhere though. Common sense.

I've been in LA for almost 10 years and I've only been downtown after 9pm once. well other than making a quick bus/metro connection

I went to a party at an art gallery.

Other than us Hollywood types partying, there was nothing anywhere.

I figured you're more likely to die from loneliness than crime downtown. :tape:

For things to do, just hop on the "Red Line" and get off on Hollywood/Highland (they've done a lot to improve the area and it almost feels like "Hollywood" should).

It's really not as exaggerated as everyone seems to make out of it. But it has been 6 years since I moved out of California completely, so I dunno if anything has changed.

Visit my star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It's at 6251 Hollywood Boulevard. Also, visit my hand and foot prints at Graumann's Chinese Theatre, they are the only ones set in gold dust. Kodak Theatre and Dorothy Chandler Pavillion are passe. Visit the RKO Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, where I won my Oscar. "Real" winners won at the RKO Pantages Theatre, not today's wannabes. Stop by AMPAS and watch a couple of my movies, too!

Helen, aren't you afraid someone's going to jackhammer your prints out of the ground one night and put it up on Ebay as a "replica" ?

At 87 years old, hon, I just can't sweat the small stuff anymore. Anyway, if they get ripped off, it'll get me a bunch of publicity and I can re-set them on live TV. Hell, that could get me like a legit film role instead of playing this shit on Lifetime. Did I tell you, they are already making a Lifetime TV movie about the Duke Lacrosse Rape Scandal? Of course, because it's Lifetime TV, each and ever guy at the party is guilty and stuff. Anyway, I'm playing the sharp-tongued lady-Judge who will give all the awful boys their comeuppance in court.

Yes, there are two of those roles, one has this long monologue on how her son is innocent and "those whores" are after money. Hon, the part is tailor-made for you, I'll TELL them to cast you. Maybe we can get Neely a part, too.

Ding, ding, ding! That's the correct answer! Some of those streets in the heart of downtown (Flower, Grand, Hope) are nice but they're desolate at night. Now venturing further south (or is it east) towards the garment district, well you're taking your chances IF you don't put on your 'game face'. IOTW, don't walk around looking like a target for these numbskulls. Sorry that's harsh but it's something to think about every time you travel. I'm a nice guy and it reads on my face but I can put up a tough attitude if I have to.

I could say a few choice words to you but I won't. I will leave it that you are just ignorant. Where are you from Beverly Hills? Please explain to me what is wrong with the cities besides they are populated with African American and Hispanics, are you afraid of them?

Manhattan at night is fine. After 911 it basically has become a police state. I can't tell u how many times I've been alone in the east village at like 3:00am and not seeing another soul. Samething for the subway.
