British supermodel Naomi Campbell was arrested in New York today for allegedly assaulting her assistant, who had to be hospitalised.

Campbell, 35, was taken into police custody from her home in midtown Manhattan, a police spokeswoman said.

Police learned of the alleged assault when they were called to Lenox Hill Hospital, where Campbell's assistant, described as a 42-year-old woman, had been taken for treatment.

"She had a laceration to her head, so she was clearly hit with some sort of object," the police spokeswoman said.

Campbell was being held by the police pending possible charges, the spokeswoman said.

Campbell, who shot to fame after being discovered by Elite Modelling agents near her London home when she was just 15, is well known for her fiery temper.

In 2000, she pleaded guilty in a Canadian court to assaulting another assistant, Georgina Galanis, while shooting a movie in Toronto two years earlier.

Galanis, 38, had accused the model of grabbing her by the throat and hitting her on the head with a telephone. :hearts:

Under an agreement reached between her lawyers and Canadian prosecutors, Campbell was given an absolute discharge, saving her from receiving a criminal record in Canada.

In an effort to get control over her temper, Campbell at one point booked herself into an anger-management clinic in Arizona - a move she later explained during a television interview with star US broadcaster Barbara Walters.

"Anger is a manifestation of a deeper issue, ... and that, for me, is based on insecurity, self-esteem and loneliness," Campbell said.

"I was really unhappy. I realised I was going to lose the people who really loved me if I didn't find out what was making me do the things I did," she said.

Campbell's rise to superstar status was rapid, and she was the first black supermodel to grace the cover of Vogue magazine.

She became the darling of top international designers, forging an especially close relationship with the house of Versace, for whom she modelled for 12 years before an acrimonious parting of the ways in 1999.
