I don't like the cover. Something tells me her label is going for a more commercial vibe this time around because the last album didn't sell very well.

i think they want to get he US market with this album like they did with the first. the 2nd album was more "experimental" a mix of sounds but had some great songs as well

I loved the second album, but the style just isn't one that easily appealed to the masses unfortunately. I like that she goes in a bit of a new direction with every album, I quite like Maneater and Promiscuous and hopefully the rest of the album will have plenty of good quality songs too :)

I agree. The second album was to me one of the top 10 best of that year.
I really hope Timberland learns his lesson. Let Nelly Furtado be Nelly Furtado.

He wanted Kiley Dean to be the white Aaliyah and for a couple of songs she really sounded like her.
He was a bit more out of the box with Utada.
I hope he continues that route.
Never mind. I spoke too soon. The talking parts of Promiscuous Girl sounds a bit like Fergie and the vocal part sounds like Aaliyah.
There doesn't seem to be any distingiushable vocal that says I'm Nelly Furtado and I'm back.

Kiley Dean never sounded like Aaliyah apart from in Make Me A Song where she uses Aaliyah's Rock Da Boat hook, and her album Simple Girl was great.

And to this day, Be Alone is one of the best songs to be made!!!

thanks for providing links to the songs! Ever since Nelly was shouted in Blender for the hottest song of the Spring I've been itching to hear it.

Folklore was a very emotional album and I absolutely adore it. Man... "Build You Up" and "Childhood Dreams" were gorgeous.

I hate it didn't do well. How can HILARY DUFF SELL MILLIONS OF RECORDS WITH NO VOICE? But someone with clear talent doesn't do well like Nelly and India, to name a few.

Uh Huh. I'm listening to it now and there's no way you cannot tell me the rhythm, the beat, and the vocals aren't Aaliyah-esque.
It's a bit creepy and Kiley Dean usually doesn't sound like that.

Beat is Aaliyah-esque because it was produced by the same person who used to produce some of her beats.

But you're telling me any girl who uses a soft voice to sing is trying to be like Aaliyah. I find it actually disrespectful to Kiley Dean that people say she is the white Aaliyah or she is trying to sound like her. She isn't trying to be and she doesn't sound like Aaliyah on that song.

If you think like this about Kiley, you would probably think Shelby Norman is Aaliyah's double with the songs she has made with Timbaland!

I dunno, when I first heard Maneater I loved it. However, it has gotten a bit annoying and Promiscuous Girl is the newer song of the two to me and it hasn't been played out.

However, I think for commercial success Maneater is the right choice. I see it being a bigger commercial hit than Promiscuous Girl.

Utada's voice isn't that strong and I never said she tried to sound like Aaliyah. She was allowed to be herself though and let her distinct voice flow through Timberland's beats.
The same can't be said for many of Kiley Dean's songs.
I probably would have heard of Shelby Norman but her record label kinda fell apart.

I also read that Maneater was going to be the lead single, but I also read that Nelly decided to go with Promiscuous Girl instead...I think they're both really good so I'm happy either way, but I do think that PG is a song better suited as a first single. :)

I kinda agree, i love Folklore.. One of my fave album ever! I'm going to see Nelly live this summer i can't wait to hear those new songs and of course a lot of the former album (i hope)!!

Here are the lyrics to Promiscuous Girl

N: Am I throwin you off?
Nope
N: Didnít think so

How you doiní young lady
That feeliní that you giviní really drives me crazy
You donít haveta play about the joke
I said a lot of words first time every smoke

Looking for a girl thatíll treat you right
You lookiní for her in the day time with the light
You might be the type if I play my cards right
I'll find out by the end of the night

N: You expect me to let you just let you hit it
But will you still respect me if you get it

All I can do is try, gimme one chance
Whatís the problem I donít see no ring on your hand

I be the first to admit it, Iím curious about you, you seem so innocent

N: You wanna get in my world, get lost in it
Boy Iím tired of running, lets walk for a minute

Chorus-
Promiscuous girl
Wherever you are
Iím all alone
And it's you that I want

N: Promiscuous boy
You already know
That Iím all yours
What you waiting for?

Promiscuous girl
You're teasing me
You know what I want
And I got what you need

N: Promiscuous boy
Let's get to the point
Cause we're on a roll
Are you ready?

Verse-
N: Roses are red
Some diamonds are blue
Chivalry is dead
But you're still kinda cute

Hey! I can't keep my mind off you
Where you at, do you mind if I come through

N: Iím out of this world come with me to my planet
Get you on my level do you think that you can handle it?

They call me Thomas
last name Crown
Recognize game
I'm a lay mine's down

N: I'm a big girl I can handle myself
But if I get lonely Iíma need your help
Pay attention to me I don't talk for my health

I want you on my team
N: So does everybody else.

Baby we can keep it on the low
Let your guard down ainít nobody gotta know
If you with it girl I know a place we can go

N: What kind of girl do you take me for?

Chorus-
Don't be mad, don't get mean
N: Don't get mad, don't be mean

Hey! Don't be mad, don't get mean
N: Don't get mad, don't be mean

Wait! I don't mean no harm
I can see you with my t-shirt on

I can see you with nothing on
feeling on me before you bring that on

Bring that on
N: You know what I mean

Girl, Iím a freak you shouldn't say those things

Iím only trying to get inside your brain
To see if you can work me the way you say

It's okay, it's alright
I got something that you gon' like

Hey is that the truth or are you talking trash
Is your game M.V.P. like Steve Nash

Chorus-
Promiscuous Girl
Wherever you are
Iím all alone
And its you that I want

N: Promiscuous Boy
I'm calling your name
But you're driving me crazy
The way you're making me wait

Promiscuous Girl
You're teasing me
You know what I want
And I got what you need

N: Promiscuous Boy
We're one in the same
So we don't gotta play games no more

The entire Kiley Dean vs. Aaliyah discussion.

I have to agree with Sarah. Kiley has NEVER sounded like Aaliyah on ANY of her songs. Sorry, I just don't hear it. Sure, the beats might be similar to those of a possible Aaliyah song, but that's logical.

As for Shelby, nope... no Aaliyah comparison either.

And these new Nelly songs. They are going where the 'Get Ur Freak On' remix was going. It might not be the Nelly we know from her first two albums, but I like the fact she's taking her music to another place. Always sticking to the same can get a little boring, even when it's succesful (and makes great music in this case).

I just want her new album to come out. These are only two songs, I'm curious about the rest.

Review:

Last night I listened to an advance copy of Nelly Furtado's brand-new album "Loose" that will hit stores worldwide on June 20. The record was initially slated for release in May but due to Nelly's tour dates in Europe, Geffen decided to delay the release until after her concert commitments.

Fan message boards have been buzzing for months about Nelly's new musical direction after the singer started working in a Miami studio with hip hop prodigy Timbaland on her third record. After hearing the album in its entirety, I can conclude that "Loose" presents a whole new side of Nelly. But fans can rest assure. The album maintains the singer's qualities, individuality and idiosyncrasies that made her a star in the first place.

At first listen, "Loose" is an explosion of pure, raw energy. Continuing her "ForÁa," Nelly and Timbaland gather big beats and cheeky raps with lots of dance floor-ready production tricks. This album is primarily a hip hop and urban pop album in the same vein as recent material by Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott. With this effort, Furtado adopts hip hop in her own unique way to push the genre further into the mainstream, especially overseas.

Good examples of Nelly's new vibe are the first singles "Promiscuous" (for the USA - a saucy, ghetto fabulous duet with Timbaland) and the irresistible club track "Maneater" (for the rest of the world). The album version of "Maneater" is longer than what has been leaked to radio stations so far. It features a very cool, extended techno outro (similar to what Pet Shop Boys did on "Go West"). Another hip hop track on the record is "Glow."

Just as on "Whoa, Nelly!" and "Folklore," the GRAMMY winner experiments with different ethnic influences on "Loose." And this is what the singer does best. Furtado includes Middle Eastern instrumentation on "Wait For You" and she even has recorded the sweeping "No Hay Igual," a full-on Spanglish reggaeton song. Daddy Yankee be warned, because this is a hot one.

The entire album sounds like a rough cut with studio chatting and Nelly's giggling between tracks and even into the songs that creates a very informal (read: loose) atmosphere on the album.

"Loose" features two high-profile duets. After the success of "Fotographia," Furtado once again teamed with Latin superstar Juanes to record a mid-tempo ballad. Much has been written about her duet with Coldplay's Chris Martin on "All Good Things" that features Martin's falsetto vocals blended in with Furtado's crooning (as opposed to a question & answer duet). Martin is only credited as a co-writer of the song. Due to a publishing rights issue, this song is not formally labeled as a duet. Nelly told me today that she considers Chris a "ghost" on the song.

A standout track is "Say It Right," an atmospheric mid-tempo ballad with a gorgeous melodic pop chorus that will stick you whether you want it or not. The rhythmic R&B ballad "Showtime" displays Nelly's vocals range with her deep, velvety crooning.

My personal highlight is the intensely personal ballad "In God's Hands." Nelly wrote the song after she broke up with the father of her daughter. She sings, "You forget about love. You forgot about faith. You forgot about trust. You forgot about us."

After getting a sneak peek of the record, I have to conclude that this is a really, really good record.
"Loose" will surely be one of the most noteworthy pop releases of 2006 that will please her fans and pleasantly surprise the masses.

(I have to put up a little disclaimer about this sneak peek review: I listened to the advance record as it is pressed now. Things might be added, remastered, remixed, modified for the final release that will be in stores. I posted this review now to get everybody excited about this new album.)

I thought the exact same thing about the 'Get Ur Freak On' remix direction. In fact, I had expected that to be where she was going to go with her second album, it seemed like the progression she was going with after she was part of that remix. Instead she threw me a curve ball with Folklore, which I adored as well ;) I think it was only a matter of time before Nelly ventured more into this genre, and I think (and hope) that commercially it will bring her back into the spotlight that she ought to be in :)

I expected her to go more that way as well, on the second album. But Folklore was absolutely wonderful. It's good she had those first two albums, because she really made clear that she was not to be put in a corner with any artists. Now that's she's 'NELLY FURTADO' as we know her, she can savely make this step.

Plus, I think when it comes to an artist like Nelly. Her talent, it will make top-producers like Timbaland & The Neptunes redefine their productions. Be better, and push a little harder. The result, well, you can already hear in Promiscuous, Maneater and No Hay Igual. :yeah:

 I like Nelly and I realize she has to stretch her artistic muscles but this song is so over-produced. Her vocals, her personality are completely lost in "Promiscuous Girl". :(
