View Full Version : I'm bored...can anyone suggest to me some new music?

I'm getting a bit restless with my music collection at the moment, it is (in my opinion) eclectic and quite vast and yet I'm getting a little bored of listening to the same stuff at the moment and for some reason am having a brain blank when it comes to thinking of new music/artists to investigate and listen to  Can anyone help me out and suggest any bands/artists I should try out?

I'm quite in the mood for early 90's dance/hip hop classics, or artists with a similar style to Alanis Morissette or any new artists that do a similar style to Goldfrapp, Imogen Heap etc...I just can't think of any at the moment ;)

All suggestions welcome!

Ah-ha! Ok, now let's see what I can brainwash you with this time... ;)

You mention Goldfrapp :yeah: Then I suggest you check out Tiga, they say he is the male Goldfrapp. I reckon he's good, I'm enjoying his album Sexor.

I know you like the odd bit of electronica <YAY> and you like Tangerine Dream....have you got any Cocteau Twins? Aphex Twin?

Early 90s dance...you should try and find one of those early ministry of sound compliations! Hard house. Ahhh the 90s...

alright, but because i have no idea how much you know about that music i will just suggest some random tunes, some famous, some less so.

second phase - mentasm
foul play - finest illusion (legal mix is without helium vox if you don't like them) <- watch out for foul play tunes in general
the house crew - superhero
omni trio - thru the vibe (2 on 1 mix) <- onmi trio stuff is generally cool
cloud 9 - you got me burnin' (ray keith and nookie mix)
hyper on experience - lord of the null lines <- a must for anyone into dance music
dillinja - the angels fell
goldie (aka metalheadz) - terminator
docc scott (aka nasty habits) - dark angel
the prodigy - jericho

and many more, of course...

Ok, these may not fit into the genre you are looking for but I have a few "hot tips" which should appeal to someone with eclectic tastes. They are all what I would consider to be underappreciated artists, the creme de la creme of what I can recommend.

-anything by Shannon McNally (quite dark, American country/folk music, very good) if you can get your hands on it (hard to find)
-Los Secretos - A Tu Lado - great 80s soft rock (probably best if you understand Spanish)
-Til Tuesday (one of the better 80s pop bands, with Aimee Mann)
-Joe Bonamassa - Blues Deluxe (must not be missed if you like Blues)
-Bic Runga (light airy fairy pop from NZ)
-Archive - You All Look The Same To Me (quite a weird album this, kind of industrial/melodic and minimalistic, but very good. Potentially mind-altering though...)
-X Japan - On Guitar (classical guitar, simple and beautiful)
-DJ Shadow - Endtroducing (quite famous sample-based chillout beats)

The Buddha Bar collections are quite nice.
Not sure if you're into lounge music however the compilations are quite eclectic and the tunes vary from Latin, relaxing New Age, Middle Eastern and dance music.

Since you already have a 'vast and eclectic' collection I'm sure at least some of these are in there........

Most of these are pretty electronic-y / triphop-y:
Tricky
Orbital
Portishead
Massive Attack
Annie
Moloko
Lamb
Beth Orton
Frou Frou - which I'm sure you know, since you like Imogen Heap...
Ladytron

Some others:
Liz Phair
Nick Drake
Jeff Buckley
The New Pornographers
Aimee Mann
Andrew Bird
Jens Lekman
The Shins

...not really into 90's dance / hip-hop, so can't really help you there.

Am loving (and so thanks for suggesting :) )

Liz Phair
Regina Spektor
Shannon McNally (although it took an age to find something by her ;) )
Los Secretos - love any kind of foreign music
Archive - You All Look The Same To Me - excellent, excellent album, thanks for the suggestion, will deffo be listened to many times over!
Res - How I Do - again, really lovely album, thanks for the link. Think I shall be purchasing this for real ;)
Boards of Canada
Cloud 9
Hyper on Experience
Venus Hum
X-Japan - On Guitar

And I already had, but would pass on my recommendations to others for these artists:

Beth Orton
Frou Frou
Portishead
Ladytron
2 Many DJs

I'm glad that a lot of you guys liked Res' album. It was released back in 2001 and I just absolutely loved it since. Unfotunately she has been dropped from her label. She does many small shows all around the USA. If you have the chance to see her perform you should definately go.

I would also like to recommend "Butterfly Rocket" by Nikka Costa. It was released in 1999 I believe and only in Australia. It's a very hard to find album as it is no longer in print. It's a wonderful and understated piece of work that I am willing to share with you guys. I'll begin the upload in a few minutes.

Alanis Morissette - the vintage stuff mostly.

Fleetwood Mac - 'Beautiful Child' is awesome. Most of the stuff with Stevie nicks i love. Like 'Gypsy', 'Crystal', 'Landslide' and so.

Old skool R 'n' B is also good... some Aaliyah, Total, some Boys to Men Maybe.

Staind has some great stuff..

Oh P!nk is already on my liked list :D Have all her albums so far and fully intend on getting her new one when it comes out cos i hear it's up to Missunderztood standards

Ooooh Chinese music...never really heard any Chinese music, shall have to try it out...I do quite like Japanese music so if it's at all similar then it should be cool :D
'I'm Not Dead' just leaked today. I got it :o :o (shame on me) but I'll be getting it anyway when it comes out. I can't quite rate/review it yet, hasn't sunk in on me. But definitely a good album. :yeah:

I don't listen to J-Pop though, only like some songs from Utada Hikaru. ;) But Jay Chou is pretty good. Wide array of songs though all in the pop/R&B genre. :)

Oh try Marit Larsen (of M2M fame). Debut album just came out. 'Don't Save Me', her first single is a joyful folky/poppy song. Definitely different from what's out today. :)

Yeah, but them links are all expired/blocked now. The torrent would probably be up in another 24 hours I think.

I can send them to you, only if you promise to buy the album. :o

I listened to Regina Spektor and I didn't like it that much. I also listened to Vitalic and probably won't again until I have forgotten the experience. Never mind, I could do with reducing my music collection rather than expanding it anyway.

Ooooh I'll have a look into finding the leaked Pink album but of course I'll buy it for real as well! :D

Also for anyone interested, and some shameless promotion on my behalf ;), just thought I'd give everyone a link to a pirate radio station that my brother DJ's on  It's www.housefm.net and he does his set usually every Friday night 12am-2am (but sometimes 12am-4am). It's not music to suit everyone, kind of slightly odd electro/dance, quite indefinable actually cos he pretty much hates anything too mainstream so he picks stuff that no-one has ever heard much before, unless you are well into it like he is . I like it even though it's not my usual favourite type of music ;)

Hehe, you can work your magic! ;) Actually you probably, might, maybe, potentially, in a way, just about, possibly like his music since he likes stuff such as Kraftwerk ,Tangerine Dream etc so there's teh possibility you'll like it... ;)

Pink does rockz! :yeah: Although not the actual colour pink, I've always hated that colour...;)

How can bands which just came out be your favourite bands? Even when I hear a CD that is truly amazing, it takes at least a year for the greatness to sink in and for the CD to be eligible to be a "favourite".

Either your favourites must change from day to day, or you must have so many that the classification is meaningless.

Well for example, I saw the Guillemots live ages ago and their songs have been online for ages.

If you want to hear it, you can do so starting tomorrow on MTV's The Leak. You can go to www.mtv.com (http://www.mtv.com/) or www.mtvasia.com (http://www.mtvasia.com/) to listen to it. :)
