It doesn't really affect Nicole either. She was under an age-restriction at this time last year so she knows about playing few tournaments and only getting credit for those she plays. Now it's 16 tournaments instead of 15.
All it's doing is probably making Nicole consider if she ever wants to play Miami.
She's going to be around for a decade. Does Larry Scott really know what he's doing with this policy?
He's hurting his core players especially for American tournaments.
With no p[layers likely to be a big deal in America in the next 4-5 years, you need players with an "All-American look" to still have some people interested in the game. Players like Vaidisova, Ivanovic, Golovon, Mirza, and Kirilenko.
You don't want to make them feel like they're not wanted.

serena barely plays 16 a year anyway...

He's hurting his core players especially for American tournaments.at the time of the policy change, his core players were Venus, Serena, Sharapova, Davenport, Henin-Hardenne, Mauresmo and Clijsters. Except for Davenport, they all usually play Miami. He couldn't possibly Serena and Henin-Hardenne would be injured, and he HAD to assume Davenport would be injured. She told the WTA in writing she wasn't playing 17 tournaments this year. And tis is a tournament she usually doesn't play.

Players like Vaidisova, Ivanovic, Golovon, Mirza, and Kirilenko.I'd love to know your definition of an 'All-American look', since NONE of those players have looks that have been big generators of American TV ratings. (Mirza does generate big TV ratings, but not in the USA.)

However, that really isn't relevant. When Chris Evert retired, women's TV ratings went into the tank, and stayed there until the Williams sisters came along. There were plenty of girls with whatever kind of look you wanna call, 'All-American'. Black, white, blonde, brunette, tall, short, skinny, round. There ws only one player between Evert and Venus Williams who really caused an uptick in tennis TV viewership. Monica Seles. Who really isn't 'classically' beautiful in any way.

I just don't think a bunch of barbie dolls could going generate interest in tennis. People have movie stars and singers for that.

That's the outlook from a television perspective.
I was talking from a tournament perspective.
Have you been at these tournaments?
I have seen more people at a Nicole Vaidisova practice than watching Mary Pierce play.
It happens on a regular basis at a lot of these tournaments.
People want to see the cute girls but in the end know the veterans (if they play) will be around in the semis and finals of the tourni.

didn't we know this for weeks? i knew this when they said miami was a required event...

it's a shame, but agreed, these players rarely fill their quota so i'm not that concerned for them...on top of that, on the men's side players seem to do fine without counting all the masters series events, so it's not so worrisome

Actually i don't think most players would care as you get the impression few are that ranking conscious. Everyone who might be number 1 apart from Myskina and Dementieva has been number 1 and none of them are in sight of Hingis let alone Graf in the statistics and desperate for extra weeks at the top. No one is a clear dominant number 1 and its rather like a game of pass the parcel as it moves around 4-5 people. it doesn't make much difference where you are in the top 4 or even the top 16 given current inconsistency. The only time it matters is for entry to the YEC and there it will just be another 1 point at the bottom of the list as everything else counts anyway. An awful lot of players are reducing their schedules. Players like Serena will still get into tournaments ranked in the seventies. Basically its taking a stick to players who don't care.

In 3 months Mary played only 2 tournaments so I guess only Lindsay will be affected.
