It is only recently that I finally got around to watching "Monster's Ball." :o But wow, what a great movie!! I know lots of people think that Halle doesn't deserve her best actress oscar (which she got in 2002 I think now) but her performance in this movie is phenomenal, just a truly moving performance that showcases her deep talent that is too often wasted on flimsy films like "Catwoman" and "Gothika" ( Gothika which I secretly enjoyed though:o ) That sex scene between her and Billy Bob is one of the most graphic I have seen in a Hollywood-type commercial movie  Speaking of Billy Bob Thornton, an honourable mention for him too as he gives a very subtle, yet powerful performance in this movie too. :) Now I would just like to see Halle getting more of these meatier roles that displays her great skills and depth as an actress :bounce:

Given the shit she was up against, she deserved it. It's votes that count! You know she got some pitty votes for having to make it with Billy Bob. She won in that (hopefully former) era of hot chicks uglying up and playing a pathetic character.

Catwoman is one of my favorite movies! Over the top campy, which is what it was supposed to be. Plus, she looked totally hot, and who can't fantasize about becoming half-cat after being flushed down the drain with the toxic waste? I love the scene in the dump where she's dead and the cats gather around and the main one revives her and her pupils turn feline! Great stuff!!! I can watch it several times a week and never got bored.

I didn't like the movie, but I'm glad she won because I still insist her best performance was her performance in "Losing Isaiah".

I thought it should have gone to Sissy Spacek that year.

Now "Losing Isiah" was the picture Halle should of won for. I didn't like Monster's Ball but thought Halle did a wonderful job in her role. The sex scene with ugly ass Billy Bob was too much for this bro to stomach.

She deserved that Oscar.
She made us to a degree understand why Angelina Jolie was with Billy Bob.
The dude can just fuck. He always does look a bit white trash all the time but hey it doesn't matter when you can fuck.
I don't really find Tommy Lee apealing but when you fuck Pamela Anderson and your dick is a bit above average people stop caring.
She deserved an Oscar and some porn award just for the fuck scene.

I just hope this doesn't start a trend. Oprah keep the clothes on! Please!

A sexy Halle Berry dressed up in a 'nearly bare' tight leather cat costume! :bounce: :bounce:
What? Are you KIDDING me?! :hearts:

I forgot to add that I couldn't finish the movie [Monster's Ball]. I just found it too painful. Maybe I'll give it another go some day.

I did as well, but Sissy has hers, so I guess they wanted someone new.

The recent winner who didn't deserve it was Nicole Kidman in that crap The Hours.

Sissy Spacek = 1
Hillary Swank = 2

Martin Scorcese = 0
Three Six Mafia = 1

Halle really deserved it. It was the FIRST time I liked her performance in any movie she's been in. I was so surprised because I didn't think she could commit to a role like that. :worship:

I actually think that Halle's best role has been in the Dorothy Dandrich (sp?) she did for HBO about 7 years ago. Standout out performance in that movie.

I think Angela Basset or Jada Pinkett would have brough much more depth to that character than Halle Berry was able to. I wasn't impressed by anything in that movie BUT the sex scene. But even then, the fact that she was fucking the shit out of Billy Bob Thornton was turning my stomach.

I never thought about that before, but I think you're right. I still remember Angela Bassett's role as Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do With It," and Jada Pinkett actually made me care about her character in "Collateral" despite limited screen time.

That said, this was the best work I've seen of Halle's (not that she has too much else in her resume worth comparing), and I thought she did well. Especially the final scene - she really conveyed a lot of conflicting emotions without any dialogue to work with. It was definitely between her and Sissy Spacek (who was incredible in "In the Bedroom") for the Oscar in my mind.

I also liked "Monster's Ball" a lot in general. It's a painful movie (Heath Ledger's performance is especially heartbreaking), but it's still somehow beautiful to me.

Yep, Charlize Theron and her ugly portrayal of that seriel killer won her the Oscar, as well as Nicole Kidman wearing a prostetic nose for The Others. Bollywood loves rewarding the ladies for becoming altering their apperance.
Besides the sex scene with Billy Bob I thought Halle's performance was amazing. I thought she should of been nominated for Losing Isiah because she was great in that role, but I guess you take what you can get.

I agree with you about Halle's final scene in Monster's Ball. She showed alot of range in that scene without speaking. Tough to do.

Dana I agree with you. Especially that last scene. The movie was painful but sometimes life IS painful.

The sex scene was just that a sex scene. People have sex. I actually think even though this movie was painful it was one of the best films that Hollywood made. The racism was so raw. The hate was raw. The sex scene was raw. The mother/child relationship was raw. Frankly it was what you would see in real life and not some made up hollywood crap. I respect this film and the acting. Halle surprised me in this film. Puff Daddy was not half bad either. Also about Billy Bob and Halle sex scene. Alot of pretty women screw not so good looking men all the time. This was a raw ass movie.

:yeah: on all your points.

The sex scene was really one of the best because usually they have the two actors looking all good and the filming of it is all stylized but Monster's Ball got the intimacy and that raw feeling right. I was impressed at how Halle and Billy Bob fully committed to capturing the rawness of it all. :yeah:
