View Full Version : Venus' Draw - About as good as could be hoped

She's not in top eight. I guess with Davenport out, she IS in the eight seeds.
She does better against hard hitters then variety-types, historically.

1r BYE
2r KLEYBANOVA vs RAZZANO winner
3r Peer (2.CHakvetadze 3.Sprem)
4r Myskina or Pennatta
QF Sharapova
SF Clijsters or Dementieva
FR Mauresmo 0r Henin-Hardenne

4r - Myskina on a hard court isn't the threat that Myskina is on clay.
QF - Well, Petrova would have been ideal, but a flat-hitting baseliner is safe enough, given the available opponents. Even a hardcore Venus fan like me, in a dispassionate moment, has to admit Sharapova should be favored here. This isn't grass, Sharapova just won a hardcourt tournament, and Venus is coming back from an injury.

SF, FR - All tough, given Venus hasn't been playing.

All in all, a pretty good draw.

If Venus can win her 3 first matches and get to the Sharapova match, she'll probably win it.

Its getting there that'll be the hard part. Not because of the players, but herself.

I hope Venus doesn't lose to Kleybanova.

I saw Kleybanova in person last year in Miami qualies and she was very inconsistant. If Venus plays B- tennis, she'll get by comfortably. :)

If Venus gets deep in the tournament, I don't care who she plays, Venus will be tough as hell to beat. That's just how it is with her (and Serena)...you'll have a better chance to beat her in the early rounds while she's still warming up.

GO VEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

venus will only get to the quaters she is lacking match practice and fitness and surley at the moment will be no match for the ever improving sharapova. she should make it to the quaters though.

She is lucky in that she didn't sraw Hingis or some other tougher play semi-early, so her draw is not horrible. Its not a cakewalk though.

Lets just hope her form is better than AO, because if she has practiced and prepared then she is sure to get deep into the tournament.

I just hope she is healthy and ready to go. The tour has been so boring without her!

Fitness has never been a issue for Vee. And if she wins her first three matches she should work her way into form and she will have no problem beating Sharapova. keep praying though. :D

If she is healthy and if she really wants it, she'll get to the end!

Remember the Wimbledon last year. She has beaten those "favored" players. Don't see a reasson why she wouldn't do it again!

hmm, tough enough draw but if Vee can just make it through those early rounds, and get some feel back for her game, I think she could be hard for anyone to stop after that;)

Again, following every Venus thread!

do you sure seem to be trying to convince yourself

Yet another thread about Venus' draw?

Anyway...

We don't know her form yet, she could be as good as Wimbledon 05 or as bad as Australian Open 06. It's not that bad of a draw, and if both get there, I think we can have a sense of her form when she faces Myskina. I don't see her beating Sharapova, though. Unless she has a very strong start in the match.

My thoughts exactly!!!! Not too worried about Vee's draw....it is what it is, and she'll do what she has to do, to go as deep as she can. Good luck, Vee! It's just nice to know we can see her back on the courts. :hearts:

Well, it is the kind of draw that will keep Venus on her feet from the 3rd round onwards. This could be good for Venus in terms of match play and practice for the rest of the year. By the quarters, Venus will have to be at her A- game at least to compete. Maria will be tough, no doubt in my mind. In fact, my pre-tournament draw I have Maria beating Venus for the simple reasons of Venus' lack of matches and perhaps lack of fitness/practice. We'll see as the tournament goes on what Venus' form is, but I'm not going to live and die with Venus during this tournament. I wish her good luck, but I'm only going from round to round. No more hasty generalizations.

There is NO way Venus could lose to Alisa (and I'm a big fan of her) as Alisa doesn't have much to hurt Venus.

Hey All,

I'm another one that's just glad to see my girl's name all up in the draw. It matters little who she has to play. If a player is a winner - and it has been proven time and time again - and if the player believes it - then that is half the battle. Kim believed - as did justine - and that is why they were knocking them down like bowling balls when they re-emerged on the tour in 2005. When Venus is on - she too can knock them down.

LOL - but Venus used to say that she feared no one but her sister. I wonder if that still holds true? I'd bet big money that it does. Already beaten are the players that fear anyone in their draw. Of course, part of that is that in some cases it isn't fear but reality for some. Some just know they'd move along further if not for this one or that one on their same side.

I'm convinced, Venus is not that type. She knows that at the end of the match and/or tourney - she is the one that either won it or lost it. And I mean that to say that all of the players out there are independent contractors. They play for themselves.

Hopefully, Venus will be up to the task, and will have her wheels greased like lightening.

I'm just worried about Venus mentally, thats were she is struggling most in my opinion. If she can just stay agressive and think of wimby then I think shes got it.

There is NO way Venus could lose to Alisa (and I'm a big fan of her) as Alisa doesn't have much to hurt Venus.Change the name 'Alisa', and you have exactly what I was thinking when qualifying ended at OZ.

She's played one match in what? Five months? Is she playing because she's finally healthy? Or because she didn't want to disappoint fans from near her home? Or because she didn't want to pony up the fine? Or because she still has the demented idea she'll play 17 tournaments?

I'll be ecstatic to finally see her on court again, but Venus 2001 would drop four games a match maximum vs this opposition til she faced Myskina. I don't want to see any 7-6, 6-4 vs a quailifier.

who the heck knows?!!!!
I love me some Venus, but I can't say what she game she will bring to the court these days. 2006 has not started well and 2005 didn't end well.
But whatever, glad to have her back and she is on comfortable turf and no potential drama around playing Serena. I can only hope!
Go Vee!

believe me Pironkova is a much better player, at least now. Alisa is a horible mover, has an ok forehand, blah backhand and thats' about it. And I'm a fan of her since she was a kid, but unfortunately, at some point she has stopped improving

Venus has what it takes to win the entire tournament. I am just gald to see her back on the court but I also want and expect her to kick some solid top ten ass. Hopefully it won't be her own ass that she decides to kick. :-)

if peer is in her draw, she might have some problems, she hits iy hard and with depth and generally gets everything back deep, and is also very solid player, she even had set point of sharapova last week but maria had to save it by hitting about 5 winner like shots! in the end sharapova won 7-6 6-1
but peer did not give up maria was too strong for her cause she was hitting too many winners. when does venus have to face her cause this could be a potentially tough match especially the earlier in the tournie it is.

So, I guess you have seen Vee (Wimbledon Champion, who has beaten Sharapova last two times they've played: Wimbledon 7-6(2) 6-1 and Seoul exhibition 6-4, 6-4) on court recently, and you know something the rest off us don't, so you can claim that she is lacking fitness.

Or you are just desperately trying to convince your self in your one claims….

Why are everyone convinced that Miss Vee will meet this Alisa... It could very well turn out to be Virginie Razzano...Anyway, Vee won't accept another AO-like loss so she is gonna be on fire and the real test will be in the quarters when she probably faces Maria...You rock Vee!! :hearts: :p ;)

I agree with you 100%. I will be excited that Venus is playing but I'm taking it round by round also. Knowing that she is lacking match play leads me believe that she will struggle with her game and it will not matter whos on the other side of the net. And if she makes it to the qtrs against Maria I just hope that the queen brings her A game. The Shark will be consistent and confident after winning IW's. Venus must play her like she did at Wimbledon.

They should try it...

Well I'm kind of sick seeing them not taking tennis super seriously after losing early in Oz. It just seemed to me that neither were prepared enough for this year. Serena should've been in better shape by the Aus. at least. She really wasn't. Venus was not as fit as she was at Wimbledon last year. They seem to just not car anymore because they've done all they want to do in tennis (esp. Venus), and now it is party time. Neither want in badly enough right now to compete. Might as well not play if they aren't going to compete at 100% fit and hungry.

WTA needs to intervene no doubt or just tell us the truth.
