you say serena is more famous than maria? well looks like you're wrong. Maria didnt win a slam last year and still ended #1 in the top searches for athletes ;)

Sharapova's Still a Smash

Wimbledon (+87%) is just getting under way, and already we're wondering: Can Maria Sharapova (+47%) repeat as champion? Not only did the Russian princess come out of nowhere to win it all in '04, she served and volleyed her way onto the Buzz A-list without breaking a sweat. Now with all eyes on her, both on court and in Search, the leggy icon will don the required white togs of Wimbledon in hopes of taking home another trophy. We'll have to wait to see if she wins the right to curtsey before the Queen, but it's not too early to check out how her competition stacks up in Search. Grab yourself some strawberries and cream -- here we go.

It should come as no surprise that Sharapova is the most searched-on entrant in this year's tourney. What might raise some eyebrows is the size of her lead. The model-esque Maria has more than triple the Buzz of her nearest competitor, Serena Williams (+51%). Interestingly, the playing field remains anything but level the further down we go in the Search order. Serena's searches are four times those of her sister Venus (+49%). And interest in Venus doubles that of number one seed Lindsay Davenport (+48%). Of course, we're hardly going out on a limb when we say these numbers will certainly change once the inevitable upsets begin.

Sharapova Most Searched Athlete on Yahoo!

It was a sensational year for women's tennis in 2005, according to Yahoo's Top Searches of 2005. Three Sony Ericsson WTA Tour stars featured in Yahoo.com's Top 10 individual athlete searches, male or female.

Maria Sharapova (pictured), finished No.1 in the individual category of the Most-Searched list. The Russian teenager, who surprised everyone by capturing the Wimbledon title in 2004, continued to etch her name into the history books in 2005, spending a total of seven weeks as the world's No.1 player, the 15th woman (and first Russian) in Tour history to rank first in the Singles Rankings.

Another Russian starlet, Anna Kournikova, finished at No.2 on the individual list. Kournikova, who has been on a tennis hiatus for the last few years, is a former Top 10 singles player but excelled particularly in doubles, winning 16 Tour doubles titles and reaching No.1 in the Doubles Rankings.

The two Russian stars were joined by seven-time Grand Slam singles champion and former world No.1 Serena Williams, who finished No.6. Williams started off 2005 with a bang, capturing the Australian Open title, but struggled the rest of the season with injuries. The 24-year-old American has also been making a name for herself recently with acting roles and with her own clothing design company.

This is true. But, Serena has been famous from 1999 to 2006 and Maria from 2004 to 2006. Which tally of years holds the most people? More people definitely know of Serena.

LOL. This thread could be created by one of my friends, who is really obsessed with tabloid magazines. If you tell her such and such actor is quite good at acting, she will reply "but he never appears on U.S. Weekly so he can't be that famous." :)

regardless of how much you may try to refute it, serena (and venus) williams will always have had a bigger impact on the sport of tennis than maria sharapova and anna kournikova. who cares if geeks that wanna rub one out search for maria more in this particular year? they're certainly not searching her because of her compelling past or tennis accomplishments. :retard:

There seems to be no end to GM threads discussing the relative popularity of Masha and the Williams sisters (some by understandably desperate WS fans, trying to prove they still matter because they're popular).

Moot point, for the most. Anna K is still the only female tennis player everyone has heard about.

And if you want to talk about yahoo, lets talk about aol, serena was the third most popular searched althlte out of every single athlete. She was the number one searched tennis player. Sharapova was the number two searched player.

Who CARES?

Anyways.. I have an unbiased opinion, because I'm not a fan of either player. But Serena Williams still has the bigger fame.. EVERYONE knows who Serena Williams is. Maria is very, very popular and gaining ground rapidly, but I say Serena is still more "famous."

Maria has more searches because she's more attractive, not because she's more well known.

How idiotic.

You might want to look into the reasons why such a thing would be true?

Is Maria the better player? NO

Has she won more slams? NO

Is she better looking? Emphatic NOO!!! However, going by the media perpetuated imagine of what beauty is, Maria is more closely resembled to a barbie doll than Serena. I never want to cross racial lines and all ... but Give Maria darker skin, or darker hair... few more curves.. you are foolish if you think she'd be topping such nonsense polls.

Please do not forget that the Williams Sisters have done so much to raise the bar and fame of the game. They raised the power game with their natural athlectic ability and forced the other girls to TRAIN HARDER!! Justine Henin is a good example of someone who had to do this.

A better Poll would be AMONG tennis fans, who is more popular... Maria seems more popular to the tennis naive and anyone with tennis sense.

Ugh.... NONSENSE!!!!

I mean if it is true... please think as to why. Why the most successful player on the tour so far, is surpassed in noterirty and popularity but a tall blonde with one slam and two tier ones to her name?

Sounds just wrong to me.

And look at players like Justine, Kim, and Amelie... they're not even mentioned and they ALL have winning records against Maria!!!! Where they mentioned in these ridiculous POLLS??

NO!!!

The Internet is not the best indicator of whom is known, several market research studies have been done around the world in which Venus and Serena switched places several times for the number one spot as the most recognizable female athletes. Contrary to popular belief they are more Famous than ANNA K. or Maria S.
