Lindsay Davenport has pulled out of the Nasdaq-100 tournament in Miami because of a back injury.
The American former world number one has a bulging disc in her lower back which hampered her at last week's Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells.

"I was hoping to have recovered in time (for Miami) but unfortunately I am not yet ready to play at the top of my game," said Davenport, 29.

Fellow American Serena Williams is also out of the event with a knee injury.

I, for one, am so happy to see this. Lindsay is clearly not healthy and she doesn't play well through pain. There is really no point in going to a tournament that she dislikes and traditionally gets hurt at anyway. If she wants to have a chance at a slam, she needs to rest and make sure she is 100% healthy. :)

Completely agree :)

She needs 4-6 weeks to heal this back injury anyway - there was no point in going to Miami simply to aggravate it.

Ideally a top 4 seeding, but that looks very unlikely.

But really, it wouldn't make too much of a difference whether she's the number 5 or number 8 seed - she'd still get one of the top 4 seeds in the QFs.

If the studio gave me some piece of shit to do that I didn't want to do, I could always get a doctor's note. Laryngitis was my top one, second only to flu and nervous exhaustion. Sam Cohn never seemed to realize that I yelled at him the loudest when I was supposedly suffering from laryngitis!

Nope, she didn't play Miami last year, so no points will come off, had she played it would have been a great opportunity to gain points and maybe get back up to #4...

From now until Stanford, she's defending

Why? There's no difference between 5-8. Either way, you're playing a top 4 player in the QF. Hoping for a top 4 seed would be nice, but there's no way that's happening. She'll be lucky to be around 6 by grass season, as she's boycotting clay with the latest "injury".

I don't think she'd want to play at Miami anyway. She's always had injuries everytime she played there. But, imagine, the fine she (and Serena) would have to pay for pulling out  It's a smack on WTA's face anyway :D

The WTA doesn't need a slap in the face on this one. Both of them should face major fines for pulling out. Lindsay was a big supporter of mandatory events, but when they pick an event she doesn't like to be the mandatory one, she pulls out. If the WTA doesn't fine her, it sends a horrible message out. Lindsay is injured, but it's not preventing her from playing. So, fine her.

Mar 20th, 2006, 09:45 PM
She' could come and give a wo. in the very first match, but maybe the fine was not that big as we think. Not a good way for leaving the field. I hope that Serena, Lindsay and Mary will recover soon. I'm routing for Masha and Marta atm. Maybe Venus will do something. IMHO Miami is going to be far more interesting than IW. It's an mandatory event, great field and instant replay for the first time etc.

To be honest I don't think seeding matters too much at the moment when the players who are the best when they play they best are often not top 4 seeds. The 'benefit' Lindsay received out of being the top seed in three of the last four slams were two Round of 16 meetings with Clijsters and a quarterfinal against Henin-Hardenne.

It looks like Mauresmo, Sharapova and Clijsters are locks for top 4 seeds. Henin-Hardenne is looking good too but she has a lot of points to defend in the next three months (virtually her whole rankings worth) and is prone to injury and illness so she is never a certainty. Lindsay being a top 8 seed just means that she'll meet those players no earlier than she met Clijsters and Henin when she was the top seed.

They can fine her for skipping this event, but they're also dealing with a woman who has made $20,000,000 in career earnings and probably double that in endorsement deals. Unless they fine her in the millions for pulling out of Miami, which would be completely absurd and just won't happen, I'm sure she'll happily take the fine and not play.

If this injury takes 4-6 weeks to heal though, that means no Amelia Island or Charleston for Lindsay. If that's the case, she needs to just bag the clay court season. She won't play Strasbourg as she's openly said she doesn't like playing there, and she certainly won't play any of the other clay events leading in. It seems silly for her to come into RG without any clay court practice when she could spend the next 3 months on grass and come into Wimbledon kicking serious ass.

Even her previous clay court ventures have been half-assed. Lindsay even said last year that after Charleston, she was practicing on hard courts the whole time and didn't touch a clay court until she actually got to Roland Garros.

Are the players trying to make a point to the powers that rule the WTA or is Lindsay making a point that she can do what Serena does? Lindsay has almost quoted Serena saying I am not ready to play at the top of my game which is an odd reason for not turning up to a mandatory tournament - it implies the injury doesn't stop you playing just not playing well which is a novel definition of being injured. Basically it sends the twin messages that you can't make me turn up as anyone can say they are not at their best and back it up with an injury and if Serena doesn't have to turn up why should I.

I've no problem with her not turning up and its clear she has a real injury but it seems odd not just to say I am injured and not add the bit about not playing at her top level the week after Serena withdrew with the same reason. Smart girls don't say odd things without some reason.

Anyway so much for the mandatory Tier 1s........

Yes but why did she bother to say it - she could get a nedical note anyway which could probably say too injured to play so why imply she could play just not well? Its a message to someone - fine me? fine me and Serena? Why does Serena get away with it not me? Stuff mandatory tournaments?

Mar 20th, 2006, 11:00 PM
Yea. So Lindsay does the expected thing.
She will likely be at Amelia Island in two weeks.
Then she will likely say she won't play the French Open because of some reasoning about being older and needing to play less.
Then she will play the French Open and make the quarters again and at the same time supposedly hating her play the whole time.
Then play Wimbledon and lose in the semis.
Talk about not coming back but then play every summer tournament you can imagine and win almost all of them giving the perception that maybe she isn't going to retire as she says.
Lindsay is just so transparent.
She probably considered it to be mandatory and thought about playing it and was going to play it until she saw that Serena and Mary decided not to and considered it not as mandatory as the WTA would like.
She didn't to have that bad of an injury when associating with Gwen so I am a bit suspicious about how bad this injury really is.
Just like last year when she was spotted at a hockey game 4 hours after being at the Advanta Championships player's reception.
So tell me Lindsay did the flu come up before or after you went to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks game? :tape:
Either way it would have been best if you stayed in Philly if you really expected to play.
In this way I consider Lindsay a coward because she will wait until the last minute to pull out of a tourni which takes the focus off of her pulling out and puts the focus on other players like Serena, Maria, Mary, Venus, and Justine.

Lindsay was a big supporter of mandatory events,I don't think that's true. When people questioned Venus and Serena not playing Indian Wells after 2001, it was Davenport who said repeatedly that players should only play where they wanted.

And it was shortly after that that she began skipping Miami.

Yes, how crazy to think that a near 30 year old woman might have an injury that she wants to protect until she feels healthy enough to compete. After over a decade on tour, the aches and pains are surely minimal.

She definitely should. I know she doesn't like that tournament either (Gosh, what tournaments does Lindsay like? ), but she really needs SOME match play before entering Wimbledon. The weather's bad, the grass is different, yadda yadda yadda.. she better play it or something else before Wimbledon.

It won't happen, but she really should play Charleston if possible, then RG, then Wimbledon.
