Vika this year has been terrible apart from maybe last week. She lost to Chin wei Chan 6-2 6-2 in a 25k :tape: She seems to be getting her form back though with some wins last week in Stanford. Vika as a junior was a AO finalist, and as a 14 year old won 2 matches in LA 2003 beating Krasnoroutskaya and Stevenson before falling to the world number 12 Sugiyama in 2 sets

Oh dear. :o What's happening to this very promising young player I saw a year or two ago? She showed so much promise, now she’s so low on confidence and as a result her game is suffering badly. I hope she can get her career back on track because she’s a very talented player.

She really needs to change everything. I saw her play in the aus open qualies last year and she was getting overpowered. Her serves needs a lot of work, I also think she should chnage her raquet its a very light raquet.

She should travel outside the US to play some weaker challengers

Glad that Vika won, though beating an unranked 14-year-old girl can hardly be considered impressive.
Llagostera Vives (a pretty decent clay-courter, like most Spaniards) or Johansson (a less accomplished player, though she trashed Llagostera Vives a few weeks ago) is next. Good luck!

I've been big fan of Vika for a while and I just don't understand why she never was able to live up to her potential. I expected her to easily be a top 15 player for a while and lately she's been hardly more that mediocre, frankly. We all know how talented she is so what's keeping her from consistently playing the type of tennis we know she can?

I look on her as quite talented but not extraordinarily so, and a product of a sound academy training regime. But she's a baseliner who doesn't hit that hard, so really, who does she threaten? I thought when I saw her playing against Benesova in RG qualifying that she was playing just as well as she could play and rode her luck well to take the first set, but that Benesova was playing about rank 50th, was honestly better and would take the match, as she did.
I don't detect any problems in her mentally.

Wika is AMAZE! :hearts: She's is playing qualies in Kraków. She's already through to the final - where she plays Velieva. Wika shouldn't break too much sweat.

She was just solid today, although at times incosistent. She's quite calm on the court and very friendly off it. I talked to her and her coach and both were really nice. Apparently Wika's grandmother comes from Kraków, but it's Wika's first visit here.
She has a great sense of humour too. When I told her that Sevastova lost wasting MPs, she made :speakles: expression and said 'Oh well, women's tennis'. It was priceless! :haha:
I was wondering if she speaks any Ukrainian, but she speaks only Russian with her coach and other players. She hung out with Anna Lapushchenkova too.
Also she's very serious about her fitness, she's just about the only player to make a proper stretching before and after the match. She looks quite fit too, not too skiny, and definitely not too fat.

Sadly Wika was forced to retire today. I couldn't stay for her match today as the matches took longer than expected. I talked to Wika before the match though and she complained about her back problems, it would explain those extremely long stretchings she was doing after all of her matches in qualies. She also complained about the centre court that it's much harder and it makes her feel more pain in her spine. I hoped to see more of her than that... oh well, here's hoping she comes back next year.

Was a massive struggle. 2 hrs 7 mins for a straight sets win.

Serving by both players was absolutely horrendous. 9 breaks for Vika, 7 for Olga. Obviously I didn't see like that but it would appear as though she served pretty poorly. Serve like that against a good opponent in the AO and she'll be punished even more.

Thanks for the link Cédric!

Vika lost 1-6 4-6 to Sprem in the Torhout final.
She was apparently leading 4-1 in the 2nd set. :(

Still a great week for her.
Hopefully she'll keep her momentum going during the clay season.

vika has made the long flight back to the us to play the family circle cup! strange but hope she kicks ass!! plays fellow ukr Mariya KORYTTSEVA and then a possible match up with her good friend alona bondarenko !! that would be an interesting match up with vika leading head to head 2/0!! :) previous matches were
2005 CHARLESTON CLAY (O) Q- R16 V. KUTUZOVA 7-6(5) 6-4 and
2005 POITIERS HARD (I) R32 V. KUTUZOVA 3-6 6-2 6-2
a long time ago but just shows the talent of vika beating a future top 20 when she was only 16!!!

and if u go back to juniors u find
2001 Lawn Tennis Cup QF Clay (O) V.KUTUZOVA 6-4 7-6(4)
this one woulda sucked for alona 4 years older and at home and beaten in straight sets!

I don't quite understand why she chose to play in Charleston instead of Barcelona.

Good luck against Koryttseva!

Wika has destroyed her compatriot 61 61. :worship:
She should do the same to Ukrainian #1 too.

This means Vika will definitely be back in the top 100 next week.

Wika keeps on rockin' in Charleston. She's just beaten Alona 64 75 (could've been easier). 3-0 against her now in H2H. Good luck against Vesnina or Schnyder! :yeah:

I will wait with a bananarama for another win this week.
Since Wika got into RG MD, I hope she comes to Warsaw so I can see her in qualies.

Vika in the 3rd round of a WTA main draw :D
Remember Charleston 2005?

Exciting times! :bounce:

Vika lost 7-6 (4) 7-5 to Vesnina. Vika was leading 5-3 in the 1st set. In the second, it was Vesnina who was leading 5-3, but Vika fought back to 5-5 only to get broken in the final game. :(

Very tight match (VK: 94 total points won, EV: 101), despite Vika hitting 10 DFs and no aces (compared to Elena's 11 aces and 4 DFs). These stats suggest that Vika was more than holding her own during the rallies.

Still a good week. I hope she can build on it for the European clay season.

She led 5-1 in the first set. :tape:

Still, this week has been a vast improvement on her form over the past two years. She'll likely fall out of the top 100 again after Cagnes Sur-Mer unless she defends the title, but a MD win at RG would really help her ranking and she wouldn't be back stuck in challengers.

She really did have some chances in both sets. I really felt she could take it when she levelled it up at 5 all in the 2nd. She had a BP to go up *6-5 and also 40-0 lead in the next game before she lost 5 straight points. :(
Oh well, still it's a big step forward. :yeah:

... and hopefully all the way to the final. :p There's basically just a couple of nobodies & wannabies (to put it in GM-language) between her and the title. Still 3 matches away, but she can do it. Cohen-Aloro is definitely beatable to start with.

I expect a win tomorrow, and a SF loss to Rezai.

Also, could be wrong but isn't this Vika's first ever WTA QF?

Off the top of my head I remember that she reached 4r of IW ages ago and twice 3r in Charleston and that would be it. Should've beaten Demented at RG (in 2006? ) too. :p
So yeah, that would be her first ever WTA QF.
