:D Yeah they should come in with great confidence. It is winnable for them actually. This is Fedcup and it's Russia we're talking about. Even with Justine and Kim, Russia has a good chance if they fight like they have before. We'll see what form both Belgians are in in Miami though. Russia might get an added boost if one or two of the Belgian duo are slightly injured or are playing below their level.

he should have picked svetlana :fiery:

I don't think he didn't want Sveta to play. Sveta probably decided to skip this round as she said last year she'd never play in BELGIUM again.

The question is who will be the Russian no.1- Nadia is no.7 and Elena is no.8 but the gap is very small between them...

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova will lead champions Russia in next month's first round Fed Cup tie against Belgium.

With Anastasia Myskina, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova unavailable, Russia captain Shamil Tarpishchev has called up Fed Cup newcomer Maria Kirilenko and Dinara Safina for the April 22-23 clash in Liege.

Former world number ones Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters are expected to lead the Belgium team.

Former French Open (http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news/?p=French+Open) champion Myskina is taking a year off from her Fed Cup duties while 2004 Wimbledon (http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news/?p=Wimbledon) champion Maria Sharapova has skipped the tie because it is held on clay.

Former U.S. Open (http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news/?p=U.S.+Open) champion Kuznetsova has vowed never to play in Belgium again after being wrongly accused of a doping violation by a Belgian sports minister last year.

Tarpishchev said Russia were aiming for a Fed Cup hat-trick after winning back-to-back titles in the last two years.

"All our girls have been in good form recently and they are all confident of playing well in Liege," he told Reuters. "We don't fear anyone, even if they field Henin and Clijsters."

Petrova won the Qatar Open this month, beating Australian Open (http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news/?p=Australian+%0AOpen) champion Amelie Mauresmo in the final, while Dementieva reached the final of last week's Indian Wells tournament where she upset Henin-Hardenne in the semis.

Good team, but Belgium is the huge favorite in this tie.

People like to claim the Russians' fighting spirit and patriotism to be some sort of an edge, well what about the Belgians? Justine and Kim have never lost a FC match in Belgium, and they're both fighters. I think they'll win barring injuries.

Hee, Lena herself said, that she HOPES one of the Belgians doesn't play, cause then they have a so much better chance of winning. So whatever, Shamil...

No need to roll your eyes on me, tenn_ace. I never actually was on Shamil bashing thread in Russian Roulette, what about you?

I expect him to say: Well, they have a strong team, we have a strong team, the chances are 50/50, blah, blah. The usual blah that captains say...
Why bring fear into it? It sounds stupid and insincere.

In today's Sun-Sentinel -

Clijsters was on court Sunday for her first practice session and declared herself fit and recovered from her recent foot injury. She had a hard, one-hour workout and she made it clear, once again, that she plans to retire after either this year or next.

Asked about WTA CEO Larry Scott's concept of giving the women an enforced four weeks off after Wimbledon to help cut down on fatigue-related injuries, she replied: "I'll be home with kids by the time that happens."

that was totally for a different reason, so don't bring it in here. The issue at hand is what he said about meeting Belgians and what he said is totally appropriate.

The 50/50 crap works when there is no clear favourite and you need your team to stay on their toes. In this case, I'm sure about Russian girls having butterflies as it is, so what they need is their captain being confident in the team's ability to beat Belgians.
