View Full Version : who will win miami?

msharafan
Mar 20th, 2006, 06:54 AM
there is definitly a grand slam line up with nearly all the top players playing. but who will take the step and win the title? bear in mind justine might not be playing due ti injury(dont know yeat).
basically these are the quastions you need to ask yourself when voting on the poll.
can amelie the new #1 cope with the pressure of being the new best player and will she survive the tough field to win?
will kim make a great comeback from injury and defend her title?
will justine get over her knee injury in time and continue her winning ways?
will sharapova continue her stunning form and improvement and make another breakthrough win, its worth noting she played very well in the wind in miami.
will lindsay make a great comeback over her back injury and surprise everyone?
will hingis shock the tennis world?
or will an upcoming player like vaidisova or ivanivic or kirilenko come through?
or will the other russians and hantuchova make a strike?

also why do you think the player will win

sharapova has surprised me so much last week in indian wells, and if she continues her great form i think shell finally get a win off the likes of justine and kim, and surprise everyone by winning.

if maria wins i'll be impressed...only kim and steffi have done the IW/miami double, meaning it's just way hard, so i'd just say odds are against it...
thinking about justine's results just makes me feel unsettled inside, i can't explain it, it's nothing like horrible or anything, but i'm just confused big time, so i'll not pick her
lindsay has been a bit off recently, and it's one of her least favorite events, so not her
hingis isn't ready yet, and the young ones, et al. are not ready yet
gotta think it's kim or amelie in my opinion...

i picked kim because i prefer her of the two and i'm counting on her being fully fit, if she's not 100% i'd think amelie

:inlove:
Mar 20th, 2006, 07:31 AM
I say Amelie as she's fresh and rested. But I don't know how Kim's playing right now or if that injury's still a problem. I say it's either gonna be Kim, Amelie or Masha. :)

I think its pretty wide open. As a Kim fan would love to see her win it, but I can't honestly see it happening - her fitness and match play levels being open to severe questioning. In addition to the fitness/injury problems, Kim has looked disappointingly unmotivated in recent months. I only hope that's the result of the little injury niggles and nothing more deep seated ;)

Maria winning is a good possibility. I hope she does the back to back IW/Miami wins. ;)

Her strongest competition would be obviously Kim, JHH, and Amelie. I have faith though that if she faces one of them, she'll take 'em down. :rocker2: Defeating two in a row though is the big question. C'mon Maria! :bigclap:

also sorry to any venus fans i forgot to add venus to the list(i knew there was somone i was leaving out) and i kind of went with the top 5 and hingis, sorry once again it was a genuine mistake, just like the one maria coud have made when making her thank you speech! if you want to vote for venus write her name down on the written thread. once again sorry, but i dont really see venus winning im afraid too much lack of match practice if she comes up against any of the big guns, if she had played a few tournies before hand now.... i might not have forgoten to add her in (but i didnt do it on perpose!)

My choice is defintely on Maria
Nobody knows about how Kim feel physically
Justine is not in shape anymore, she's even a little bit injured
Amélie can win if the other are unhealthy. She didn't beat a top5 this year when she was totally in shape and can lose against players like Petrova,Ivanovic or Kuznetsova. Her only good win was against Martian who plays as well as a top5 so far;But who knows...:)

Don’t worry Maria will get her fair share of criticism from me. I like tennis a lot and most all the top players I rout for, but it’s interesting that Maria fans never really criticized me for saying negative things about my favorites like Serena, Venus, Kim, Justine, Momo, Lindsay, Lena D, Patty, Petrova and believe me I have gotten all over them and will continue especially when they are bsing around like Serena.

1.The hardcourt queen, Kim! She's been the best on hard courts for a year now, and when healthy is a level above everyone else. She has taken some time to rest and heal and has been practicing for over a week now. If she is moving freely, she'll be unstopable!
2. Sharapova---- sucess breeds sucess.....though unlikely as she will be tired and fitness has never been her strong point
3. Amelie--- #1, but not with a bullet! Losing to Petrova recently on hard courts is not a good sign. A healthy Kim will also win a match up with her.
4. JHH--- just cant count her out, though injury doesnt sound good.....

Dark Horses:
Venus--- can't count out a 3 time champ. Hasn't played since AO, could be very rusty with a lot of UEs

Martina--- will most likely make the QFs or better. Hasn't taken that next step yet though, and beaten to 2 top players back to back. Could be her time or she may have to wait for the clay to move up

Dementieva--- so close all the time, she's bound to win a biggie some time soon.

get over it maria deservadly won wimby in 2004, and nothings going to change that. also i just watched the match between sharapova and venus last year in miami in the semis, both players were playing soo good. and this made me think about wimby 05 and the maria venus match, maria was outplayed on the day but if you look back to the match in miami although more closely contested sharapova did the same to venus as venus did to her in wimby 05. this would suggest to me that maria didnt play nearly as well in miami last year as she did in wimby last year. the miami match proves when both players are on form that sharapova is the winner. also i doubt venus will be queen of wimby for much longer... watch out!

that maria didnt play nearly as well in miami last year as she did in wimby last year.

oops thats meant to be maria played much better in miami compared to wimby last year! sorry! Venus is the reigning Wimbledon Champion outplaying and outhitting the defending champion and the #1 player in the world. Maria has one Wimbledon title; Venus has three! Venus has been in five Wimbledon finals, Maria one. Get over it, already! Venus did not beat Maria, because Maria wasn't playing her best. Venus beat Maria because she is a better grasscourt player. period.

And. . .there is no reason to assume that Venus can't outplay Maria on hardcourts as well. Venus played Maria again in the Tokyo Exhibition with little match play and after all this hype about how the fans would be all over Maria and Venus might be jealous, Venus beat Maria convincingly on Maria's so-called "home-turf."

Venus does everything Maria does and is a superior athlete. There isn't a shot that Maria can hit that Venus can't get to usually.

When Venus retires, Maria can try to get beat Venus' record. Until then, relax. She's only 18---

Well said!!!

If Venus can play her game at a decent level, she can beat Maria on ANY Surface. She has as much power, better volleys, and better movement.

Match play is currenty her only handicap, but hopefully getting through some very tough opening matches.. she should catch up quickly.

So long as Venus goesn't give another 60+ unforced errors (12 games!!!) she should be fine. Not forgetting she beat Maria to a whimpering, hyper ventilating wreck on centre court at wimbledon in their last pro encounter.

*Reminisce*

Venus, please play like you did at Wimbledon. Fewer unforced errors, no breakdowns.

Best of Luck!!!

in fact maria was wiping amelie when her injury came on her in that match, did you not notice? and to any venus fans i said already i forgot to put her in and im sorry but shes not really much of a contender in my opinion anyway sorry, she hasnt won a match all year and i definitly know she wont be sharapova so whats the point in listing somone whos a contender who is not expected to get past the quater finals?

Do as you will. She was written off at wimbledon, and look what she left of Maria that day a wimbledon. Maria... whimpering, hyper ventilating .. biting he towel. Dazed and confused, having to drag her corpse off those courts.

I don't think Maria will be confident at all in the prospect of meeting Venus.

But let the tennis talk... we'll all know soon enough!

I agree. Amelie is my third option. And maybe Justine, depends on her knee, I think.

i sure will be surprised if Venus clinched this title. No matter how talented a player is (and we all know Vee is one of the most natural talented playersthat has played the game) there is no way of beating the competiton without a match practice. This is not to diminish Vee's chances of making this tourny a success, but the current in-form players (i.e. Masha, Justine, Amelie) would be too much for her. Even though she outplayed Sharapova at Wimby I cant see her repeating it now. Sure, she is capable of beating Maria, but not at the moment (or in the course of Miami '06). Anyhow, Masha-Vee match up is such a great prospect. Good luck to both and may the better one win.

Considering the aren't Justine & Amelie :D in her road to the final , I'd say Kim Clijsters.
