:yeah:
Indian Wells will be a walk in the park compared to this one (given all the top players don't pull out) but we have faith in our girl and she's coming off a title... GO MARIA!!!
:yeah:

Draw coming out on Monday?

Let's win Miami too Maria! :bounce:

Best of luck in Miami. You have a lot of points to defend. Keep up this good form, ride on this huge wave of confidence...and you certainly have a chance to make it two title wins in a row! :)

Can't wait for the draw. Does anyone know where Maria is on the list of seeds for Miami. Will she be top 4? And didn't Kim win IW and Miami back to back last year?

ive got some news on masha's draw, shell have to face venus in the quaters, then kim then justine or amelie in the final, very tough draw but masha beat venus here last year at the quaters too in straight sets, kim will be a tough prospect but maria in great form, and well worry about the final later if she makes it. tough draw though, but no idea if she has a bye or who she will face first, i will be back with more updates as soon as i can!

I dont know why but a possible match-up with Kirilenko bothers me more than a match-up with either Venus or Kim. I guess her retirement in China comes to mind. It's really good she won IW - I can worry a little bit less.

dont worry that was near moscow time right wuth maria's injury, we shouldnt worry too much about that, and anyway masha will probably have to face hantuchova in the 4th round and not kirilenko. i am worried about venus though, she has actually bothered to show up so she might mean business, although maria beat venus last year in the quaters, maria has lost to venus twice since then, straight sets at wimby and straight sets in an exhibition match. but maria is in such good form if physically her shoulder is ok and she is not too tired i defininitly think she can get to the semis, and she has a good chance to beat kim too. like i said before this draw is so tough so we wont talk about finals yey. and to people who think this draw is easy look at kims, the only potential there id dementieva, hmm maybe elena could give us another favour. but kim seems pretty confident shes over her injury in her diary on her website, these are tough times for masha lets just hope she continues to play like she has being and wins miami!

It's a decent draw, and as said before, in her current form she doesn't need to be afraid of anybody. It would be interesting for me if she'd play Emma Laine in the 3rd round. I could ask Emma what it was like to play Masha. :)

Most likely there will be tougher matches here than in Indian Wells, but I believe Maria will come through as the winner. :bounce:

Maria needs to keep up that awesome standard of play from IW.

If she does, she should do really well. I worry about Kim and Justine though. Never feel very comfortable when Maria plays them, though I feel it is only a matter of time before she starts to even up the H2H's somewhat. She is overdue a win against both of them.

I feel the same way. But i think that since the IW win she will feel a lot more confident and have a lot more momentum. I think that its possible that Maria could win in it all in Miami.

Thats true, though match fitness isn't always relevant for Kim. This time last year Maria was on a hot streak of form, whereas Kim was just returning from injury after a long layoff, and she still beat Maria in the final.

I feel Maria's subsequent encounters with Kim have taught her how to deal with Kims game though. Their last encounter at the US Open was the closest yet.

Exactly. As much as I was glad to see Elena push through to the IW final, I really wanted to see Maria beat Justine and IW was really a good chance for her to do that. I hope Maria beats any Belgian that stands in her way in Miami. A win for Maria against them is really in order. ;)

yeah well maria's chances just significanty improved as venus has pulled out, she should at least make it to the semis. anyone hear anything about maria releasing a new clothes order this week, and if she is is it for tennis, also anyone know what shes wearing, nike have nice pink clothes i hope maria will wear then cause pink suits her.

bellascarlett
Mar 23rd, 2006, 10:16 AM
i dunno, the seemingly easier draw still :scared: me. it's a game you know, ball is round etc etc. she still has to be on her feet the whole time and not underestimate her opponents. of course maria has a greater chance of getting to the semis now but it's difficult to be too relaxed and certain about things. i'll still be nervous for her every match either way. and i also never saw venus as a threat anyway. it was and still is kirilenko i'm worried about. but im sure maria can handle kirilenko if she plays like she did in IW specifically in the semis vs martina.

NAZGŰL-100 OPEN (Miami, Florida, USA; outdoor hard; WTA Tier I)
=============== http://www.nasdaq-100open.com/ (http://www.nasdaq-100open.com/)

This is an historic tournament in that Hawkeye will be used to verify line-calls for the first time ever on the WTA and ATP Tours. Each player will be allowed to challenge two line-calls per set (and one more in a tiebreak), but a challenge is not used up if the player is correct.

Maria: "As a player, I want to know that line-calls are as accurate as technology will allow. In that sense, today's [6th March] announcement is great news for all players."

Maria preview
-------------

2r: If Maria is healthy then I can't envisage anything other than a routine victory over Li, whom she beat 6-0 6-2 in 3r Australian Open 2005.

3r: Again, I can't envisage problems for Maria against Peschke, though I'd prefer a match with the beautiful Maria Elena Camerin (who actually beat our Maria at ITF Pittsburgh 2002 for a 1-0 head-to-head).

4r: This round promises a beautiful opponent for Maria, whether it's Flavia Pennetta as the seedings decree, Maria Kirilenko as I would prefer, or even Marta Domachowska. Big Maria should get a good workout from either Flavia or Little Maria, who were in good form before their disappointing exits at Indian Wells, but may now be struggling with an ankle-sprain and a knee-injury respectively.

qf: Perhaps Anastasia Myskina would be the one to come through that section, but she lost 6-1 6-3 to Dinara Safina at Indian Wells. I would love to see Anna Chakvetadze come through, but I think Shahar Peer is the dark horse of that section.

sf: Defending champion Kim Clijsters is the obvious threat, but she's only played one tournament (Antwerp) since suffering a serious ankle-injury at the Australian Open. But she got to the final of Antwerp, so even a seriously-injured Clijsters is hard to beat. Maria has a 0-4 head-to-head against Clijsters, but this would be a good chance to rectify that.

I would love to see Tatiana Golovin come through that quarter of the draw instead, but Elena Dementieva, Francesca Schiavone or Anna-Lena Grönefeld would be the most likely beneficiaries if anything happened to Clijsters.

final: I would love to see either Daniela Hantuchová or Vera Zvonarëva in the final [edit: unfortunately cute Vera lost], but the most likely finalists from the top half are new world #1 and fluke Australian Open champion Amélie Mauresmo (whom Maria has never beaten), Nadia Petrova (who beat Mauresmo in the Doha final, but has a mental block over playing Maria), or even Martina Hingis, who is making an amazing comeback after her three-year retirement.

Or perhaps this will be the tournament where the talented Ana Ivanovic really comes of age.

Honestly, I don't hope so. ;) Ev'rybody will say her win is fluke. :o Beating a tough opponent in the final to steal the trophy sounds much more cooler.

2004 was a bad year full stop and Wimbledon just really took the hate to a whole new level the YEC escelated it even more, im really happy no with how GM is getting people are respecting and liking her a lot more and defending her which is good and i think some of that would have to do with the respect we show other posters and their favs.

You're dead right.

Msharafan, Tennisgay and Marshmallow only provoke Maria fans to react. By doing so, you are satisfying their need for attention. You wouldn't want to think they are laughing at you would you?

Ignoring them will piss them off even more. And then hopefully one of them will cross the line and get banned. (Although, considering the shitty moderating on this site, thats unlikely to happen).

The original and biggest was after wimby though. The only people supporting Maria in the GM then were her fans who dared to venture in. It was common to be in 4 or 5 arguements at once  the disappointing thing was how people resorted to name calling and pretty bad comments...but as Andrew said its better these days...most sensible people have a level of respect for Masha.

Maria never got the protection in the GM that some other players get....there were many vocal haters over time and tennisjay and marshy are the new generation. notice how fonsito (who was skindeep before) got banned pretty quick but he was saying nothing worse than the others.

damn moderators!!

yesterday I said that they kinda like that all fight
and one said to me: "Its just that we are not following this everytime"
so...excuse but it's not now that u (moderators) should make others moderators??

and btw, how u got someone to be ban??
'cause I had reported as bad post thounsands of time Marsh and Tennis_ay and nothing really happens

About Maria problem in gm is kinda simple, she's pretty, young, rich, famous, blonde and she's got some talent
it's kinda hard for peoples take that

was easy with Anna, she was pretty but no tallent
and most of the n1 are ugly....it's always hard for we to find peoples "pretty and smart"
and when that happens they have a really tought life
My friend is like that, she's gorgeus and damn smart....poor girl, what she got from hatters was "uncountable" (this word probably doesnt exist, but I guess that u following thet meaning)

so that happens....but I dont blame Mash (and I forgot the rets of the nicK  ) it's really hard for we to hear something bad about someone that we really like and be with our mouth shut
I really try.... but sometimes I cant control
so....guys, Im gonna tell u all a secret.... I bad repu tennisjay with that:
"GO FUC*& YOURSELF UR ASSHOLE!!"

it really made me feel a lot better!!
I said sorry at the beggining for what I was going to say and i said..... sorry guys!!

but yeah msharafan, i would advise you against starting threads about Maria in gm...especially when it's asking people what they think of maria's chances of winning a certain match and you going on to say she'll win against all odds. what you're doing isn't entirely wrong but given the circumstances, that's just luring haters and potential arguments. just talk about maria's matches here in her forum as much as possible.

I watched it. I thought Maria was impressive in coming back from 2-5 and saving 8 set points. It was a good practice at bearing down under extreme pressure, which will serve her well in the future. It is good for her mental game.

Many players would just relax too much, kind of conceding the set to save their energy for the last set. Maria fought back, can put this behind her and get a little rest.

Q. What could you say about the match?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I didn't really feel great out there today. You know, I started off well and things were going my way and all of a sudden, you know, just made a lot of unforced errors, especially with the wind. All my balls were floating out.

Couldn't quite get the feel out there or the rhythm, so, you know, moving was difficult for some reason. Maybe because I played ‑‑ went to sleep a little bit late so was a little bit lousy on the court.

But she hit some great shots. She hit the ball very deep and hard and she played like she had nothing to lose. You know, it's kind of dangerous when you play those opponents that don't have anything to lose and go for their shots.

I fought for it. I did a good job of fighting at the end. When the day's not great, when you feel like you're not playing your best tennis, I still know that I can fight it out, and that's how I win most ‑‑ a lot of my matches.

Q. What time did you get back and were able to go to sleep?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Probably like at 12.

Q. What time did you have to get up and get back here to get ready?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I got up at 8 or something like that.

Q. So how do you prepare for such a quick turnaround?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, you don't really prepare, you just have to go with the flow. You know, you have to make sure you eat well, late and early. You don't really have an appetite, but you somehow have to create one.

You know, that's really important, the food intake and a good night's rest. Sometimes it's difficult coming off a night match to sleep well, but that's, you know, very important to be ready for the next match.

Q. What would you say about the HawkEye, the challenge?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: What can I say about it, it's interesting. I think it's, in a way, great. I also think that a lot of balls, you know, are a little bit ‑‑ you know, they're out and you know they're out but they're close. I think the fans just want to see for entertainment. They start booing and they want to hear the entertainment, they want to see it on the screen. Sometimes it gets a little too much because you know the ball was out or you know the ball was in, you're not going to challenge it but they kind of try to force you into it.

But that's the fans and that's the entertainment part of it. But, you know, we had to expect that.

Q. The numbers show that the player challenges have not been particularly successful, especially the women's side. Any thoughts on that?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: You know, we have the challenges and if we feel like we need to use them, then why not? You know, if we have the opportunity. Yesterday, I used two of them and they were later in the set where, you know, I still have two and I haven't used them, you know, just to see.

But, you know, I don't ‑‑ if you have the opportunity and you feel like you want to use it, you know, we're not doing something illegal.

Q. You just wanted to test it out? You didn't think the balls you questioned ‑‑

MARIA SHARAPOVA: One of them I wanted to know and one of them I wasn't sure and I asked the umpire if it was far long. She couldn't give me a definite answer. I said why not, it was in the second set, I think. It turned out to be a pretty big out, but she didn't really ‑‑ you know, that's the thing, I want to still find out if I can ask her "did she see it very long?" If she did, there's no point in asking. But if it was really close and she doesn't really know, then I would challenge it.

Q. Do you like it or not like it so far?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I like it. I think it makes the match a lot more closer, more intriguing and more fun.

Q. Will it be hard playing a friend?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, it's always hard playing a friend, you know. We've played a few times in the past. Last time was not a good experience for me. I was injured in Beijing and she was playing great tennis.

So, you know, she's a great athlete. She can definitely play the game. And, you know, like I said, it's always tough playing a friend, but that's tennis. You know, you're gonna play your buddies once in a while.

Q. She got up pretty big early in that second set. She was up 5‑2. You were down 40‑Love, I think it was.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Uh‑hmm.

Q. Mentally, how did you get yourself back to be able to win that third point?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, I just tried to get another ball back, make her force the error. She's up 40‑Love, serving for it so, you know, she wants to close it out. It's in her hands, you know. I just try to get another ball back and, I mean, on 40‑30 I hit a lefty shot that kind of floated up in the air. I mean, it was a pretty good shot. She missed a swinging volley. I think she kind of lost her confidence from then on.

Q. Haven't won many of those left‑handed shots, have you?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I haven't?

Q. No.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Uhm, I have ‑‑ it has saved me a lot in my career.

Q. Yeah?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, definitely.

Q. I haven't seen you win many of those.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, no, I've...

I remember I've won a lot. Some balls where I feel I can't reach with the two‑handed backhand, that's when I do it. Obviously, I don't have that much power from that side, but that's the only chance I've got. So I remember I hit some great, great ones at Wimbledon last year and the year before, but no.

Ignore. Them.

Sometimes ignoring obvious trolls is the right strategy, but at other times it does no good at all.

Many of them are willing to put down dozens of hate threads with jibes, insults, demeaning pictures etc, and just keep them going, cheering each other on. That sort of thing is only stopped by confronting them.

At the moment Maria-bashers are fewer on GM, but that doesn't mean a lot of them aren't just lying fallow for a while. If they think its safe to emerge, they will do.

Maria Croft
Mar 27th, 2006, 08:03 PM
I saw the whole match, didn’t even zap away once ( I must be going crazy  ) the first set Maria played rubbish tennis, Kirilenko was playing good tennis by the way, Maria started going for longer rallies in the second and Kirilenko made the mistake going for lots of slide shots, not a bad tactic when someone is making many errors like Sharapova, but she was starting to play better, her shots were going in again and she gained confidence, by the time Kirilenko started to attack again it was to late, Sharapova was already playing at her normal level and Kirilenko lost her own game, she started to make more and more errors, after a long final game Maria finally won! so relieved, she really had to fight for it :)

Funny thing is they both questioned some calls but were always wrong lol

Heh. I was pulling my hair off by the root after the first set, Maria played so sloppy and seemed to make errors just for the heck of it, but I should have known by now that she'll fight to the end and make it. Kirilenko played well in the beginning, very smart, but just couldn't keep it up. I don't know about the quality, but there sure was enough excitement for me.
Should always grab a few beers just for the nerves, or else these close matches will be the death of me. Naah, it's all good fun. :)

Best of Luck for the Quarterfinal, Maria! :bounce:

Masha fought hard and really round her form in the second half of that match which is great to see. Well done Masha and good luck for the rest of the tournament, this match should set her up nicely for another All Russian battle against Myskina. That is going to be a tough match and one that im slightly worried about

Maria Croft
Mar 27th, 2006, 10:21 PM
I doubt Myskina will be tough, she's a good player and finding her form again and they have their history together, that could create an interesting match, but I don't see her beating Maria, even tough Maria isn't playing her best this tournament judging her past results she should be to much for Myskina right now, but they are both Russians and fighters, so it I wouldn't be surprised if it really would be a very tough match, it’s tennis after all lol

thank god maria pulled through that match, i was soo nervous by the time the match was finished i had a migraine and had to go to bed. maria played terrible for the first set and a half and then picked it up a bit at the end of the second set to win it. i was still very nervous though going in to the third but maria went back to her old confident self with more come ons and fist pumps. maria then won the next few crucial games and at 5-1 40-15 i was hooray but we had a last minute scare when lil masha hit some brill shots to get a couple of break points but credit to big masha although she couldnt get the first serve in at match point she did manage it when she went back to deuce or had break point. well done to big masha but she play terrible for a while and im worried to say that myskina is starting to play much better and will be looking for a breakthrough win, which shell be confident enough to get off sharapova in her recent form. maria will really need to step it up somehow and hopfully the wind which seemed to effect big masha a lot in her last match will be low and maria can just step up to her next level and stay there. good luck masha!

Q. I noticed that your brother was watching the women's match.

JAMES BLAKE: They got shorter skirts, you know (laughter). I probably would have, too.

No, it's good to have him in the crowd, but I know where he's getting his paycheck from this week. He's been hitting with Kirilenko all week, all the time at Indian Wells. He's been helping her out. It was too bad she couldn't get through.

But he's, you know, doing his job, and now I guess he gets a break from that so he'll probably be back in the box with my match. Unfortunately, the schedulers didn't know that so they had us both at the same time.

Most likely she will, Myskina is nothing to fear
All Maria has to do is to play her best and not get careless, be patient, and keep the pressure on Anya (usually this does not apply to the underdog, but these two have a past and hate losing to each other), who is one of WTA's prized headcases.
Maybe Maria can throw in some "Come On's" on her winners too, fluster Anya some more, and have her Dad scream all match. Anya will have a mental breakdown

that said, Maria can win easily without such tactics

Maria seems to take a while to get going against Maria K...

tell me about it...a set and a half... :o  she made me so nervous (sorry for the late posts you guys). worst of all, you knew she was losing because of her own sloppy play. kirilenko was good but not good enough if maria only kept herself solid all throughout the match especially that first set. oh well...

and regarding kirilenko getting annoyed by maria getting herself pumped up. it actually took a while before maria was fist pumping and shouting cmons on a consistent basis. it could very well be because she was playing a friend that maria was slightly toning it down (at least that's how i saw it). it was only after the first set that she started to really get into the match and let herself go with the celebrations after winning points. and when the match was on the line in the third, it seemed like all notions of friendship finally left maria and she was back to her normal fighter self on the court. it was quite funny to watch how maria progressed throughout the match. i guess i can laugh about it now coz she won.

anyway, i doubt kirilenko got annoyed and there should really be no reason to. im sure she knows maria is just naturally competitive on court but i guess you never know. but yeah i believe it was maria who initiated the kiss at the net which was good of her to do to you know eliminate the tension right away. it was just a game afterall, nothing personal.

has the postmatch interview been posted? coz i could post it if it hasnt been.

anyway, on to the next match...well i just hope and pray maria seriously steps it up big time against nastya. it's just weird that she's not playing that great considering her IW win two weeks ago. i really dont know if she was affected in any way by the upsets in the beginning of the tourny.

Yea Maria's interview has been posted

I would have thought Maria would have started quietly for that reason but she needs to be intense to get herself through situations like that. The same thing happened in LA the first time. Some ppl were suggesting that Maria was 'showing up' Masha K by deliberatly fist pumping at her face which I found very, very hard to believe.

This QF is going to be a good one....good luck Masha :yeah:

where? in gm?

maria never acted any different then she does in her other matches. if anything, i found it weird that she was very low-key in the first set. but understandable i guess coz first she was playing a friend and second she was losing :tape:. at least she managed to pull herself together after the first set.

come to think of it, she wasnt as in your face in her celebrations as you would come to expect from her when in a tough battle. no really loud crazy cmons  as far as i can remember. except for that huge scream in the end, she was lacking in intensity by her own standards lol.

Yea just as I thought, thanks Bella and Jakim :yeah:
The suggestions came from a couple of guys in Maria K's forum. I havent see the whole match yet but I know Maria would tone it down and that can affect her intensity.

why do some of you sound really scared of Anya anyway? She hasn't won a big tourney in... forever...
Nah, I don't scare of Nastya, I just try to down-to-earth, cos the match will be unpredicable and who knows what can happen :o But I believe Maria will finish Nastya in 2 set  Maria needs to do her best. ;)
The only thing I'm sure is there'll be at least a Russian in the semi lol

I Was hearing that Dan was having some issues with the scene of his kiss with Cho

which means our Maria has more time to rest, and she'll know exactly when her match starts... good! :D
I have mixed views on this, first off means I cant watch it live plus its on ES2 so that means scrolling newsbar on capture.

I'm sure Maria was affected by playing Kirilenko. Although she was fistpumping and "come on" - ing in the final set, she still didn't have that steely "look" in her eye which she has when she's playing other players.

As for Kirilenko, she and Masha go into matches with the same attitude - play to win. There was no quarter given by either on court. They both understand that. remenber also that Kirilenko took both Lindsay and Mauresmo to three sets in past months.

Tonight's match could be tough. Her opponent is always motivated against other Russians. However Maria is a better player now than in 2004. If she plays well she should have too much for her fellow Russian.

I'm very stressed about the match between Maria and nastya..I have bad feelings about Mairia  Although I love Myskina too,I think it will be very benefic for Maria to win this tourney, especially by beating Momo in final. And who knows,it will may give her lots of confidence for the clay season... Figer crossed for Maria and wait and see. C'mon Maria :yeah:
