In their acceptance speaches Elena thanked Maria, she actually said thank you. But Maria didn't mention Elena at all, and it didn't look like an oversight. Maria didn't even look at Elena and at one point they were acres apart and Elena looked a little uncomfortable.

Is their a bit of bad blood between the two, and if so does anone know why? You can't beat a bit of off court rivalry to spice things up!

But Elena was very gracious in defeat.

Theres no real history between them aside from past minor comments made about the Russian team situation. Theyve played 5 times since 2003 though.

if u looked closer u'd see things were fine
i'm not really a fan but enough is enough

You may not like her, if that is the case

yeh i agree princess sarah. she is not such a bad person or anything. she is a bit immature but she will grow out of it cause she is still young. just give her a chance. she is a fantastic tennis player and will be one of the greats of the game wen she retires i rekon. just focus on her tennis and give her a fair go.

I think Elena has said that Maria is the best of the Russians out there. From what I understand anyway, besides Elena and Myskina, there are hardly many friendships even among the Russians.

So even though I don't expect Dementieva to come out and say she loves Maria, I do think she acknowledges Sharapova's talent.

Elena was as usual nice and modest whereas Maria ....I'm not going to say anything bad. :tape: ..but it's her choice if she wants to thank her or not....I think Lena doesn't even care about her...there were some talks for the Russian Fed Cup team and Lena expressed herself clear that she doesn't like Maria on the team  ...so I guess friendship is out of the question  ...anyway Lena can live without Maria, that's for sure

Elena was the nasty one at the net. Maria put her hand up to give Elena the 'buddy' handshake, which Elena kindly returned with a handshake in which she barely touched Maria's hand. It was funny stuff. :p

I was confused as to why Maria didn't say, "Elena had a great tournament, and should feel great about her week. She played a great match.". Elena congratulated Maria, why couldn't she return the favor?

I was also a little bit dissapointed by Maria... I hope she just forgot and no thought was put into that as I love both players.

PS. I don't see Maria giving Elena any credit in her interview as well. Of course, I only saw parts of it in the news articles...

IF MARIA EVER WANTS TO PLAY ON RUSSIA'S FEDCUP TEAM, SHE HAS TO MAKE EFFORTS TO PATCH UP WITH THE REST OF RUSSIAN GIRLS. THIS WAS A LOST GOOD OPPORTUNITY.

True, but they also not the ones who started fights, screaming in the stand, coaching, harassing Russian players. And although Masha didn't do it either, it's her dad who did. She, unfortunately, has to pay for his antics... so thats why it's up to her

On the ATP website, Elena has a video interview in which she was asked to look ahead to the final. She then says that she thinks it's first of all great to have two Russians in the final and that it should be an interesting match for both of them. Elena is indeed very patriotic and this comment is just one of among many that proves that she is. When she's talking about Russia in relation to the other countries in tennis, Elena definitely includes Maria in the Russian contingent and why wouldn't she? Maria is their best player at the moment.

I too was dissapointed by Maria not congratulating Elena on a fine tournament. :( And I don't think it was an oversight on Maria's part. She's too shrewd and savvy to forget congratulating Elena a couple minutes after Elena congratulated her. It was a very strange situation for me as I'm a huge fan of both girls. But Masha does seem to lack something when it comes to decorum and civility. She didn't say anything nice to Serena after she beat Serena in the 2004 Wimbledon final. We over looked that because of her youth and the excitement of the moment. But it should not be over looked anymore. Maybe it's not a big deal. But Masha not taking 5 seconds to congratulate Elena on her fine tournament dissapointed me more than the poor quality of the final.

And tenn_ace, Russia does not need Sharapova to win the Fed Cup. Russia has plenty of girls hungry to play Fed Cup for Russia. But Maria Sharapova might not be one of them. And we need to accept the possibilty of that.

TeamMasha, Maria didn't congratulate Serena on making 3 straight Wimbledon finals. She sarcasically said she was sorry about beating Serena. And she only mentioned Serena in her 2004 Wimbledon Ladies championship victory speech because Sue Barker of the BBC brought up Serena to Maria while interviewing her on court after the final. Now I gave Maria a pass then because of the enormity of the moment in her career and life. Now she should be past that in 2006. She's been in enough finals to know to congratulate her opponent win or lose.

Dementieva said: ďI think it was very difficult to play today. I think Maria, she was able to handle the situation and play with the wind better today.

"I was mentally prepared. I wanted to play against her. I wanted to face her in Tokyo. I wanted to play her here. For me it's interesting. It's a great challenge for me to play against Maria. I feel I wasn't at my best today, and she was playing great.Ē

I am not a big Maria fan but I think she didn't congratulate Elena because she remembers all the comments Elena said about her in the past about her not being Russian. I don't like Maria's on court behavior but I must admit she seems to be nice off court. She gives very classy interviews and never makes snide remarks about her opponents. I am really starting to like her.:)

Maria played a great tournament and had a great win, decisively beating Elena 6-1, 6-2. She did not (and never has) made any side or mean remarks about anyone.

Yet rather than give the girl a little credit or respect for her achievements some posters prefer to dig up or make up some petty crap to put her down.

Lena and Nastya say things, and then forget they said them.

Sharapova is the one who might be holding a grudge.
But I don't believe she is. A lot of players just don't want friends near their level of play.
Because you wind up competing and it's hard to be friends.

FROM THE ACURA CLASSIC IN CARLSBAD, CALIF. Ė The so-called real Russian will play the so-called Russian-American in the quarterfinals of $1.3 million Acura Classic on Friday and a tremendous amount of pride is on the line.

Roland Garroschampion Anastasia Myskina has never lost Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova on court and as it stands, is also currently winning the battle for the hearts and minds of other Russian players.

The brunette Myskina is acknowledged leader of the deep Russian squad in the locker room while to some, the blonde Sharapova is little more than interloper when it comes to things Russian. French Open finalist Elena Dementieva said last week that Sharapova is "not really Russian" and on Thursday, the Moscow born and bred Myskina said Sharapovaís "mentality is American" and that she doesnít think Sharapova "has ever to been [back] to Russia."

Those comments didnít set well with the ferociously competitive teenager, who didnít exactly call for a Lear Jet to take her from Sochi to Florida when she was seven. Sharapovaís ambitious father, Yuri, sat with her in coach and upon landing took a public bus to the Bollettieri Academy so she could receive proper training.

"Weíve had totally different ways of growing up and developing our careers," Sharapova snarled. "Even though I train in America, Iím still Russian. Thatís where I come from. No one going is going to tell me where I'm from because I know where Iím from. Just because I made the decision to develop my tennis somewhere else -- I think I made the right decision."

With all that said, Myskina said that she would welcome Sharapova on the Russian Fed Cup team and that Maria speaks Russian "pretty well" for someone who has spent 10 off her 17 years in the US.

"Maria has lived in the United States and she's more comfortable in English that she is in Russian," Myskina said. "But if she wants to play Fed Cup next year, why not? We want to have al the good players, because itís easier to win matches.

Maria: 'No one going is going to tell me where I'm from because I know here Iím from'
"I donít feel American at all," she said. "I feel this is part of my job. I donít know where I would be living. I came to the United States because of my tennis. Maybe I would still be in Russia or maybe I would have wanted to live someone else. I moved here because of my tennis, not for anything else."
