A lot of close games ... but Sharapova won the big points!

Go Maria! :D :worship:

Dementieva broke twice, btw...she lead 2-0 in the second set.

Congrats, Maria! :D

This title is long overdue, she's been so consistent, it's only right she wins a big one once in a while. Not that good a match, but she was solid and played as well as she could with the wind and copping up with Elena's game. It was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests, but Maria hang in there and won the important points!

Dementieva, still a very good week. Congrats as well and good luck to both in Miami!

 Lena D. why couldn't you have played like this in the Tokyo Final? Bleh I should be happy with her great fighting, but I wish she would have played better today. She played the big points poorly. Her serve wasn't even that bad, it was her groundies that were off today. Disappointing, but hey it's a final. Good luck in Miami.

Nice tournament Maria.

the wind was bad
Maria found a better way to handle with that issue than Elena
Elena hanst played good, mostly 'cause Maria wasnt letting her play good
Maria despite the awfull wind didnt give up of her game style, attacking all the time

the real difference was the WINNERS-UE points

and Maria was just too good

btw...guess that really will shut uo a lot of mouths here ;) :p

The handshake was OK, nothing special...Lena congratuled Maria in her speech...she was more dissapointed than sad. From what I saw, perhaps she had some tears when she was sitting after the match ended but I'm not sure that this is what happend.
In general it just was combination of impressive work of Maria and very passive attitude of Lena.
The problem was not choking or something like that, Elena was not nervous at all- she was smiling all the time- too much....The difference was the desire for the title and Maria wanted it badly...

The conditions were very tough and I thought Elena could take advantage since her game is less affected by the wind than Maria's. Maria didn't cope well with wind in last years Miami final, so I was surprised she stayed so dominant. Well done. Bad luck Elena, but at least you beat Justine.

horrid match, but congrats to sharapova. i don't like her, but i respect the way she coped with elena's game.

elena's groundies were off and when that happens, she has no chance. it's ironic for two reasons though --- it was by far the windiest day, and when she served well, she lost 1 and 2. but anyway, it wasn't a chokejob and elena had her chances (the amount of 40-0 to 0-40 games to deuce were incredible), but she just sucked today.

I don't think it was a choke either. Lena had been playing badly since the beginning of the tournament, and it's a mystery how she managed to reach the final.

Here's an edited version of a match report I posted elsewhere:

Lena played even worse than against JHH if that is possible, even though the serve (slow, sometimes right to the middle of the service box, but Masha didn't attack it) pretty much held. Her groundstrokes were all over the place, and when that happens, it's over, unless her opponent chokes or has a major lapse in concentration - something that never happens with Masha, whose main strength is the way she always gives her utmost throughout the entire length of her matches.

Masha didn't really have to bring in her A game (which, under that wind, would be very risky, if not simply suicidal), and just had to focus on being more consistent off the baseline, and get her kick serves in.

Personal notes:

I thought that, should Lena lose the final, I would draw comfort from seeing my #2 Masha winning her first tournament in ages and giving her countless haters an indigestion. Not really. It would be worse had she lost to another player, but I'm still gutted. I don't know if I prefer this embarrassing rout to a tight match in which Lena would choke away the win in the end and hit truckloads of DFs. Maybe - it didn't hurt as much, that's for sure, being over so fast.

But how would I feel if Lena hadn't won her first Tier I earlier this year? From an inauspicious start at the AO, Lena has been building a very satisfactory season, but a bad loss at a final is always a bad loss at a final.

Prizeidiot
Mar 19th, 2006, 12:42 AM
It's unfortunate that Elena has this habit of fighting through the field then folding in the big finals.

I wasn't sure what to expect after she beat Justine yesterday, but I certainly expected better than 1 and 2 against Maria.

It wouldn't hurt if Elena could win a match or two in straight sets and conserve some energy. But I guess Maria was too consistent in the end.

Maria showed great control today. I mean, the wind was just awful nontheless - neither player could really do what she wanted out there because the balls were flowing everywhere! But I really thought Maria did a great job of moving the ball around the court and waiting to hit those powerful shots - whereas early on in her career she would have tried to blast everything without adjusting. Even though it was a blowout, Elena had a good tournament too. The fact that she was even in the finals was amazing, so hats off to her too. :yeah:

Elena was sooo bad! She seems to have an aweful transition game. She plays relatively well off the back and then as soon as she has an opportunity to attack a short ball, she dumps it in the net. She really does that on a regular basis. Anyway congrats maria!

Gotta post my congrats to Maria on this title. Really deserved, and it looks to me like she's improving and willing to add shots to her repetoire. She handled the wind extremely well, also. Just overall a very well played match, even strategically. ;)

Elena, you had to be more agressive.. good week overall though.

Congrats again, Maria :hatoff:

Just watched the final on TV... and Elena was a dumb bitch out there on court!!! She didn't look focus during the match at all, and going for silly shots!!!

On the other hand, Maria looked very focus, and her movement was so impressive! She totally deserved to win the title!

the wind was bad
Maria found a better way to handle with that issue than Elena
Elena hanst played good, mostly 'cause Maria wasnt letting her play good
Maria despite the awfull wind didnt give up of her game style, attacking all the time

Exactly.

Masha played really smart tactics because Lena doesn't like when she's put in defensive position most of time. Lena is not a defensive player. She is not that effective in defense.

Plus too much UEs by Lena. :o

Anyway it's really good Masha is back in style. Her confidence is back.

And she yelled impressively after she had won. :lick:

It shows how hungry she was for this title.

Watch out, Miami, this girl is back for big wins. :bounce:

Shame Elena. She can play MUCH better. Well done for having a fantastic week, and making another final. In spite f this bad performance, you have still made your fans proud, shown your class and above all, entertained.

Maria... well, you can join in glory with past champions like the games great... Daniela Hantuchova! :p Miami is the big one anyway :haha:

Poor, poor Marshmellow. Rooting against Maria every time she played, getting your hopes up... and being put down by Maria again... and again... and again.
It must suck to be you.

I just had to give BIG props to miss sharapova for her title this week. she didn't lose a set all week, really smacked down 2 players who might have given her BIG wobbles and showed me and everyone else that she is much quicker and much more patient than before. I loved the way she attacked in matches too, good net play and an AWESOME backhand.
What is with elena d and masha though? Maria went to give a "high fives" shake, but elena gave the ordinary one, then maria didn't mention elena in her speech, THEN they stood as far apart as you could get!! what is their problem, does someone know? BTW, chrissie evert looks great!!

I can't say it's unexpected. Congrats Lena for reaching the final after that great comeback against Justine. This year so far has been great (with the AO exception). Keep it up!

And Maria, what a sport, despite winning, she was gracious in her speech and congratulated Lena and said she did well to get to the final. No, wait...:tape: :ignore:

Very good win, Maria. She coped with the gale better, and didn't let Elena get into her head. Just solid play.

Elena: only 4 DF!!! But played really well this tournament, and so far this year.

Maria: Great to see her back in good form. Won a Tier 1 with great attitude, and not losing a set!

Sorry but I have to critcise Demented here.

All that hard work in the semi, the quarters, heck every fucking round to produce THAT?! I wanted her to win and yet she was pathetic. Yes the wind was bad but it's the same for both players. Maybe she was tired but her performance was so poor. I'd have rather have watched Henin in the final then Elena cos unless Justine gets seriously *ill* again she's gonna be a threat and give a good match.

What made it all the worse was that unlike at FO, Miami or even the Kremlin at 2004 her groundstrokes let her down and not the serve and that made it worse.

Elena, great when on, terrible when off. After watching that I don't think Elena will ever reach #1 or win a slam.

Maria :) She is the Russian #1 always. She's more focused, more consisent and has a better serve. Maybe her variety is still so raw but that's not gonna hurt her against the likes of Dementieva.

4-1 in H2H's now in Maria's favour.

It wasn't an ordinary handshake - it was the same half-hearted, limp shake Lena gave Pierce at last year's YEC. No smile, no eye contact.

Lena still has that nice girl aura about her, but she seems to harbour grudges against an increasing number of players. Kuznetsova, then Pierce, now apparently Masha...

She had been playing badly since the beginning of the tournament. Once she got a top level opponent who kept her nerve and focus throughout the match (and we all know that's Masha's main strength), she was done for. It could have been JHH in the semis, but she choked. So the task fell to the Queen Tigress.

I'd have rather have watched Henin in the final then Elena cos unless Justine gets seriously *ill* again she's gonna be a threat and give a good match.

Maybe yes, more likely not. JHH didn't play that well vs Dulko (who is a pretty harmless opponent), and nuff said about her performance vs Lena. Should JHH reach the final in the form she displayed on the final stages of IW, Masha would have wiped the floor with her much like she did with Lena.

Good effort by Dementieva
you know what, meggz?:you are one of the few that praise elena for playing a good match. :worship: im just  that most of the others rather tend to put her down, instead of congratulating her for an exciting week...and what makes me most :o ,is this unbelievable arrogance from these "couch-potatoes",who think, they can judge her!!does some of them think, how hard matches she had this week, and that its pretty human to be coming to the end of your tether??strange people here....

:yeah: I watched it live and perhaps I'm mad - but I really didn't think Elena was as bad as ppl are making out considering the wind - although she did have a few really bad games after she got 2-0 up in the 2nd set. But most games seemed to not only go to deuce but also to have a lot of deuces - and there were loads of really good and long rallies. There was a long rally I remember which Maria won in the end with a great lob. I'm not sayin Elena had a great game - but IMO she wasn't as awful as you'd think by reading this thread.

As far as holding serve - serve isn't really any advantage in that wind. Both girls main concern was just to get their first seve in. The end you were at was more of an advantage than whether you were serving.

I think the main reason Maria won was because she's improved in her running and retrieving no end and because unlike last year she really coped with the wind so well - and yes maybe at the end Elena couldn't live with that and folded.

Lena has played finals like this before, 2004 Miami and RG.
I think she was worn out from tough 3 setters with Ana and Justine.
When Maria is on her game, she can close out a match very quickly.

I think Lena D. was clearly exhausted. Her groundstrokes lacked depth and penetration, and her serve was accurate, but slow and predictable even by her standards.

Having said that, I must give all props to Masha. Coming back and breaking Lena D to go up 4-2 in the second was the crucial part of the match. If she'd let Lena back in, I think a lot of tiredness would have mysteriously vanished and we would have had a third set. But Masha stepped up and slammed the door in Lena's face. That's what champions do.

Still, I can't be upset with Lena D. She has a Tier I title, a runner up, quarters and semis in two top Tier IIs.

As far as the handshake, Lena shakes everybody's hand the same. It's an old fashioned lady's handshake, the kind I'm sure Mommy Vera taught her to do when she was a little girl. I wouldn't read much into it.

How are we not allowed to judge her? I'm not saying she played awfully (although she didn't play great), but there's no point to have a message board if regular people cant give their opinions. You insult everyone here calling them coach-potatoes, but what are you then? You can't judge Elena and say she was exhausted 100% accurately, since you are just one of us.
