Dementieva is one of the best fighters in the game (winning in spite of her serve and sometimes maddening inconsistency), but was I the only one getting annoyed by the commentators at IW today bringing up her 3-set record?

Apparently it is 43-11 (including IW '06) since 2004 began, which I'll agree is remarkable. However, while it shows she can tough out matches with her mental strength, it also shows she's dropping sets way too often to inferior players. So I was just bothered that they kept bringing it up (I think it was mentioned on 3 or 4 separate occassions) - no other top player has such gaudy numbers because most of them don't need three sets to put away lower ranked players early in tournaments (example of some of the three set wins included: Yakimova, Bremond, Klaschka, Cargill, Cohen-Aloro x 2, Jugic-Salkic...).

Okay, I'm sorry. That was very nitpick-y of me. I truly was impressed with Elena's fight today. She's not a favorite of mine, but she gets nothing but respect from me for her mental strength (if only she could pass some of that attitude to Lindsay... ;) ). I hope she can follow this up with a win in the final!

but if you think about it, she's had her best wins over top players in three sets. so, maybe all those three set matches toughened her up. it's really not a bad thing. women's tennis is best of three. lena using a set to test a player's game/warm-up is unconventional, but i mean, it works for her.

however, in general, when elena wins the first set...i can normally have faith she will win the match. that is a good feeling.

The dropping of sets to lower ranked players shouldn't be celebrated, but her toughness is CONTINUALLY prevailing is fantastic.

Elena is no fluke, come a 3rd set, Elena is locked on, focused and ready to fight, including producing spectacular shots.

I do not believe for a second, that players are NOT worried by Elena when they step on court. She has so many weapons to compensate for her weakness, that she is able to fight from a set down and take out champions.

Maria is a tough cookie, no doubt. But Elena proved yesterday how much of a tougher competitior she is.

Serena, Justine and Elena are the most deadliest, steely competitors.

I'm more concerned as to how Elena's body will react. Elena is not friendly with Maria, so its not the typical all Russian match up. If anything, her desire to beat Maria, may help her push past the nerves.

Elena's serve is the key for Maria, can she hold serve if she breaks Elena? Her serve looked shaky against Martina.

Finally, if it comes to a third set, its about mental strength (check Elena) and physical stamina (check Elena). Elena can run faster than Martina and hit a hell of a lot harder to get shorter replies from Maria.

Maria has the weapons to break down Elena's attack, including the BH.

Its going to be who wants it more. Maria will want it too much IMO and overpress. Elena will begin to take control, which is why in the other thread, I voted Elena in three. :)

Good luck Elena. I am looking forward to this matchup :D

Obviously, double faults are going to hurt Elena in today's final, but once the rally gets going, she can go toe to toe with anyone, including Maria. If Elena's on, I think she's going to win today!
