View Full Version : How does Elena do it?

This was unbeliveable. Truly astonishing performace. Yes, Justine made a mess serving for the match, but the display Elena put after that was out of this world. She simply refused to make any erros but didn't stay passive - she went for the line all the time and always got it. She never let a ball go past her, chased everything down. Her serve improved and she made less DFs.
This was obviuosly not the first (nor will be the last) time she's done it. So I'm wondering, where does she find it? Mental toughness has got to be the answer but IMO this goes beyond just that, this is the ability to shut everything else around you and to focus solely on winning the point ahead. If only she could be in that state of mind right from the beginning of the match, she would be really grand.

Agree but not with the last one ;) If she was focused from the beginning of the match...the magic will be gone, that will not be the same Elena and I`ll love her less :D

Its called resilience. An inner quality that refuses to die. She 99.9% is constantly trying her best, putting effort and hard work into her shots.

Its not only mental strength, its concentration which helps execution. Elena is able to somehow, focus purely on one point at a time and shut the world, the cameras, the audience out.

However, today she was interacting, expressing herself and smiling. She wasn't feeling as pressured and I think she knew she could pull off the upset. At no point did she look downcast or upset.

I hope Elena can take this title :)

It's pure heart and determination, and that is why I just love her sooo much!! I would not be able to keep my head together if I had the service problems that Elena has. With all honesty, I would just give up. That is where the difference comes between a true athlete and a common person like myself. She refuses to give in to that woeful serve. I don't know how else to put it... she simply is Elena.

Elena lulls her opponents into a false sense of security (or puts them to sleep, depending on your perspective) with all the double-faults, then.....WHAM! She pounces on them like a lioness. ;)

She is incredible.I have immense respect for her as a player. Her serve is beyond pathetic, the biggest achilles heel in the game, but she keeps hanging in there and fighting.I don't know where she finds the mental strength when holding serve is such a battle every time. You have to admire her. Plus she's gorgeous :hearts:

That is the match that converted my wife and I into Elena fans.

And my admiration was cemented by her gracious speech following the 2004 US Open final.
