Elena, you fought so hard to get back into the match, you must now win that title. Bless this woman's fighting spirit. I don't know what to say, I almost had cardiac arrest over a dozen times watching this match. Elena Dementieva is making me age quickly. I still love her though.

This is why I love Elena.

Since the US Open she has taken down Davenport, Clijsters, Henin and Mauresmo. I think there is certainly grounds now for saying that she is good as anyone in the world on her day. There is no one she can't beat.

Elena played solid defense and offense. She wore Justine down. In the 2nd set, Justine got tight and Elena upped her game. No more getting broken, she focused on the task, and all the way through the third, she just kept edging ahead.

However, until the last point was over, I was not calm. I have HUGE respect for Justine's fighting ability. But Elena's tight 3rd set win says it all.

She is a champion and can beat Top 3 players :)

Justine :o
At least the third set had some good rallies and shots, because the first two were absolutely dreadful. Elena was awful in the first, Justine sucked in the second (what about that choke at 5-2 (the other times, credit to Dementieva, but NOT the first time she served for the match, Justine screwed up all on her own). Eww.

At the end, both showed some fight and determination, but Dementieva was better and deserved to win. Congrats, Dementieva! Even if she's mentally shaky, she has one of the biggest fighting spirits on tour. It was good to see that she stopped to double-fault and got lots of first serves in when the she most needed.

I wanted a Henin-Hardenne vs Hingis final, but I'll settle with Dementieva vs Sharapova, I just hope it's a far better match than both semifinals were. Good luck to Elena and Maria!

a trend i'm noticing in dementieva. when she's lost like 3-4-5 matches in a row to someone, she's beating them.

down 3-0 to capriati, and wins.
down 7-1 to kim, and wins.
down 4-1 against justine and wins.
down 4-1 against myskina and wins.
down 4-1 against petrova and wins.
down 4-0 against serena and wins.(though it wasn't official)
and an addition, beating lindsay when it matters most (slams) when lindsay starts owning her.
next up, amelie mauresmo.
and sharapova.

What a comeback from first set Elena!!!!
in the second set 5-2, Justine was just serving for the match.
then elena did it finish second set 5-7
It was a very close games in the third set
Elena has show what a great fighter she is by hit only 1 double fault in third set.
and I hope that elena is not too tired because the match is longer than the mens match

The match wasn't good at all. Drama alone doesn't save a match, the best point was the first MP Justine saved. There were a few more, but hard to dig up the good points in a match with more than 100 unforced errors.

Unbelieveable. Elena just pulled a Justine on Justine. A set and 5-2 down was it? She's so strong in tight matches.Perhaps the best competitor on tour? Someone showed me yesterday her three set record, and third set tiebreak records since 2002 and they're absurd.

I feel that the tough conditions (wind gusts up to 29mph) helped Elena more than Justine due to her "just get one more ball back deep" strategy - Elena played smart, consistent tennis and deserved her big win!

Absolutely. Dementieva was on court much longer all week and yet she was physically stronger and fresher throughout the entire 3rd set. Had Dementieva actually played well, she could have won that 3rd set comfortably. But she prefers messing with her fans heads and hearts. ;)

She, Justine, and Serena are the top 3 best fighter's in women's tennis, as she proved today.

All,

I always say that a bunch of errors don't always tell the entire story. And just like breaks of serves don't. And how many of them were there?

Let's say that two players were hittting it back in forth for a 30 point rally, now if a winner does not win the point in some instances - well what else is left? Hitting an error in some instances should not always mean a negative. There could be a few reasons why an error was hit after all.

When it comes to ground stroking at times, no one knows where the ball may land. I'm sure Elena is just glad to have won. She'll worry about the UE's she made some other time - like Scarlett O'hara said.

"CONGRATULATIONS ELENA" "EVEN YOUR SERVES GOT BETTER IN THE THIRD" "YOU WERE DESTINED TO WIN THAT MATCH - INDEED"

She claimed the hard-fought win when Henin-Hardenne smacked a backhand into the net - her 70th unforced error - to end the 2 hour, 52 minute clash.

70th unforced error. :tape:

she had more than 70in the third set theyshowed it and she was up to 76 so it's more like 80

Her fight and grit is very underrated in the women's game.

She, Justine, and Serena are the top 3 best fighter's in women's tennis, as she proved today.

Justine, horrible, horrible choke from someone who is supposedly the "best" in the game at closing out sets and matches...:rolls eyes:

Well done, Elena! NOW TAKE THE TITLE!
I alwasy knew she was a fighter, i just was surprised that she fought her way from 6-2 5-2 down that was amazing! :bounce:

Justine had 3 night matches in a row, but you never know with Elena. I figured it was either going to be swift and easy or a very ugly looking dog fight.

To the pundits who decreed that JHH was invincible and had IW in the bag: EAT SHIT

To the pundits who believe JHH's backhand is the greatest thing since sliced bread: why then did Lena keep playing topspin shots into it? Answer: because she knew that JHH's one handed backhand posed much less of a threat than her forehand.

Anyh00

'Tis very late at night, and I only have time for a few lines.

Shite match. Bad publicity for women's tennis. Lena played even worse than she did against Ivanovic (and won less points), even though she managed to keep the DFs under control during the decisive stage of the match. Awful choke by JHH, who actually played most of the (very little) good tennis of this match.

I feel tremendously stupid; just before the match began, I posted somewhere else that Lena doesn't have anything in the way of a game plan. Guess what - her game plan won her this match: play safe, play ugly, be patient, don't take risks unless you really have to, make every single point as long as possible, defend defend defend, make your greater endurance and staying power tell, wait for JHH to collapse.

Which, come to think of it, makes this even more enjoyable. I suppose that, had Lena played well, she would have routed JHH.

I didn't even get to see their last match :tears:

Mind you, Martina picked on Momo's bh too and it backfired :topic:

Simple. JHH's backhand is a very good slow court shot. But today conditions were the fastest of all week, plus the wind.. Result, JHH took the pace off her BH and hit very winners from that wing, shanking quite a few balls too..

This was a classic!!! I'm so glad I got to see it. I was laughing like crazy during the final games. What a whacky match. What fun!

And Dementieva's press conference was so totally charming... she was laughing and giggling and clearly on top of the world.

I was also impressed even when she was going down 2-5 in the second, Elena was still smiling and laughing at some of the crazy shots. I think that demeanor allows her to keep an even keel and fight back in hopless situations.

What can I say.

I'm not Elena's biggest fan and I do not like some of her fans who are too kind and a little deluded at times but you've gotta respect her. It was all over at 6-2 5-2 really and somehow she came back. You can't rule over Elena ever in matches like this :worship:

That was one of the worst matches of the year. People say Lena would have thrashed Justine if she was playing well, but Justine played even worse than Elena :help: She completely choked and I knew no matter how close Justine would come, there would be only one winner in that 3rd set.

I wouldn't be worried if I was a Justine fan about that knee. There would have been no tape if it hadn't got a 3rd set and Justine was moving well and serving well with it. It was tension. And anyone who plays 2h 40 minutes aren't going to be 100% fit all over.

It is a bit annoying to see Justine get injured when it all starts to go wrong though :o

I would like Elena to win now against Maria. I like Maria but it would be good to see Lena start winning titles.

And lastly, Elena was serving like back in 2004 in that last set and wasn't punished. Surely she should keep doing this. No DF and no threat ever.

Lena ,you absoultely fucking rock!! you really do , there you are ,fucked ,2-5 down and a set down ,its all going tits up ,no hope , then bang ,you pick up your game and take the set ,then drop the serve in the opener in set 3 ,but no probs break back ,then holds serve nicely and wins!!! what a result!! sorry Justine ,looks like you had it there ,but you let Elena into set 3 ,and when THAT happens ,well its bye bye time ,only one road and you are careering down it out of control...it leads to the town of YOU HAVE BEEN DEMENTINATED!!!
in all respect for your love and joy, dementinator, but it would be really nice,if you could keep the F word out of your lines! besides the fact, that it doesnt fit into this forum,it also devalues lena as a human being....

Or any other match. This has been said millions of times before, but the point can hardly made too often: she's capable of everything. Until yesterday, I didn't count myself one of those Lena fans you find so annoying, presumably because unlike them, I didn't really believe she could be #1 and win slams, because I found her too inconsistent for that. But after yesterday, who knows? Who am I to try claim knowledge of one of the world's greatest and most sublime mysteries?

That was one of the worst matches of the year. People say Lena would have thrashed Justine if she was playing well, but Justine played even worse than Elena She completely choked and I knew no matter how close Justine would come, there would be only one winner in that 3rd set.

I've said that, and I don't see why you then follow it up with a "but". I'm not saying Lena is the better player; rather, my conclusion is much the same as yours: JHH played unspeakably shite for most of the match, worse than Lena who herself was playing godawfully; if Lena was playing well, would she have handed over the first set that easily?

Elena was serving like back in 2004 in that last set and wasn't punished. Surely she should keep doing this. No DF and no threat ever.

I hope she doesn't. Masha will just blast those serves away time after time.

You aren't one of the fans that I find annoying. Lena has the game to win slams. I'm still bitter she didn't win US US04 after beating Jen since it would have been more deserved than Kuznetsova. I mean no one followed Sveta and yet in the 4th, QF's and Sf's Lena matches were great and 3 of the best slam matches of 2004.

I put one of the worst matches of the year so obviously that means I thought Lena was bad too.

I hope she doesn't. Masha will just blast those serves away time after time.

Well, if Maria is playing badly, those sliced serves may help Elena. If Maria doesn't deal with them and Lena is consisent it could be a rough day for her. If Maria hit winners though then drop it. Although that means a much riskier hard serve which Lena hits DF after DF from usually.

We'll have to wait and see :)
