View Full Version : Liking Sharapova less and less

This is just a personal thought...

I used to like her but her on-court behavior is getting worse all the time. I just watched the highlights. What is it about the exaggerated come ons. Deliberately too loud to make the opponent angry? Fist pumps are fine, come ons are fine but she's not in an opera and we don't have to turn the volume down when she's shouting come on. I hope she's already not turned into a Hewitt and she can be a little bit more respectful to her opponents.

Isn't it intense...Ohh I love this game.....!!!

When evrything all the other players are giving us is BORING, including my Justine who has been out and about streamrolling opponents, A Sharapova match is something, even though the score doesn;t suggest it but by just listening to it, the match seems to be the match of all matches.....

there is nothing wrong with showing emotion in a sport except when it's upsportsmanlike and in your face. Tennis loses fans because of it. In basketball you have this issue with players hanging on the rim and they get technical fouls for that for example , there should be some rules for unsportsmanlike behaviour in tennis too.

I kinda agree in some ways.....i thought hr come ons and fist pumps today were a little too much-she was really in Martina's face and giving her glares. I know its each to their own but it gives the appearance that shes not respectful even if thats not how she wants to be.

I also think crowds could get behind her much more if she changed the way in which sh did the come ons and stuff cos o dont think she should stop as its part of her.

I guess you didn't that other memo that's been circulating around the WTA. Sharapova isn't the only player that grunts, yells "come on," or pumps her fists.

Sharapova hasn't changed much on court, so it's just bullshit to say that, be honest and just say you never liked her and need a hate thread to get your anger out

Are you serious? Little drama is not a bad thing and I seriously doubt people turning away from tennis because some players' behaviour can be interpreted either being unsportsmanlike or being pumped up or willing to give everything to win or whatever depending on how you want to see it. Yes it's fine to hate Sharapovas behaviour, but claiming that she is turning people away from tennis is another thing. I would think that reality is quite the opposite.

I can't stand it when she screams and pumps her fists, but it is nice to have some variety on the Tour. I love it when players are calm and simple (Venus and Davenport), but I also like the ones who are intense (Serena and Sharapova).

First, your assertion that tennis is losing fans because of that, where does that come from? I am sure you have some fact to back it up.

Second, I haven't seen any player getting a technical for hanging on the rim, not in the nba, they do it several times per game, I can guarantee you, you won't see an nba game with that NOT happening, it's a given.

And the NBA is the most important basketball league in the world, by a big difference, so your second assertion is dead wrong too.

But ANYWAY... Borisy is entitled to his(/her pardon) opinion. They seem perfectly logical and justified to me.

Thank you for sharing.

I mean here another though... put yourself inher opponents positions. you;re there trying to get your work done, and right in front of you, this Yeti sided figure is making an extremely loud and extremely uncontrollable noise. Perhaps it can't even control itself. Would you not get frustrated and put off. If you wouldn't you're on of the few.

Just a thought to consider!

It's fine if she wants to yell come on's...she can do it all she wants, however you're right, It's rude to do it while starting your opponent down. I think there were a few times in the second set where she was obviously staring Martina in the face, yelling, pumping her fist...it's just not tennis anymore when you do that crap.

So my advice to her would be to look AWAY from your opponent if you have to yell all the time to get yourself psyched...I am surprised and saddened that no one around her has pointed this out, P

I love the energy and excitement Maria brings to a tennis match. Even when she's losing, she gives it 100% and it shows. I think saying that you like Maria less and less because she 'Cmons' and 'fist pumps' is unfair - a lot of players do them too, you know! Why not pick on them too? Serena, Venus, Kim, Pierce... - Oh yeah! Because you want another excuse to pick on Maria Sharapova.

Besides, I find her much more interesting to watch than a player that barely shows any emotion on court.

Very good observation, this is true about Sharapova. She is becoming another Lleyton Hewitt. Maria has poor sportsmanship!

Sharapova is a brilliant player and a great person. She is so determined on court, and that is why she pumps her fists often. The only thing that is annoying is the grunting, but so what, many past and present players have grunted as well. She is a great person off the court, and a fighter on the court, and I don't see why everyone is against her. All you haters, just get off her case and focus on her tennis, cause she is a great player and is going to be a legend in the next few years.

It's a good point to make a distinction between pumping yourself up and what you are claiming - effectively directing an "up yours" at your opponent. I never got the impression she was directing anything at Martina and that it was all pumping herself up. She may have happened to be looking in Martina's direction at the time - but she was fired up and if she didn't first actually turn her head away from Martina it doesn't mean to say she was directing a "two fingers up" at Martina.

So I disagree with you here - but I don't think you can tell from TV. You'd have to be at the match. Joe Durie and Chris Bradnam commenting (who were at the match) never said she was staring down Martina or was unsporting. They just said she's pumping herself up. Incidentally they did comment on Martina being "naughty" about questioning one of the line calls which was clearly the correct call.

Other than your point if it's true (and that's a big if) - I have to wonder at the motives of the posters criticising Maria and whether they actually watched the match: There is nothing unsporting about her fist punps and c'mons and being fired up to win.

What the hell this thread is about.
Maria's very emotional girl and she can't just you know stay quiet when she wins an important point - so does Serena, JHH with her 'allez' even after an evidente UFE etc. On the other hand, I did enjoy Martina's game some time ago, but she is a player who just doesn't know how to lose with grace, when she's bashed by an other player than Davenport. She was pissed so much after some of her own errors that it looked hilarious...becouse she is grown up, she's a Champion. However, it seems that when Hingis loses she always plays the role of a princess (remember Paris?). Still I'm not sure if I understood the thread starter correctly. :tape:
