Tennis needs and loves great rivalries:

Steffi and Monica
Navratilova and Steffi
Navratilova and Evert
King and Court

And of course Venus and Serena

1 hour 40 minutes for a 63 63 victory over Hingis by Maria with some fantastic tennis - the best of the tournament so far.

If Martina can continue, is the Sharapova/Hingis story on the verge of being one of the greatest on court rivalries of all time?

Well, after everything that has been said by both of them, I don't see why not!

Maria does seem to fight a little harder against Martina, and long may it go on if that sort of match is what we have to look forward to!

Who knows  but they have special spirit while their matches. I've never seen Maria playing so agressive and Martina also does her best in their matches

I don't think so. If it is, it will be one sided with Maria always being on top, but there’s nothing like a good old fashion Serena vs Jenn rivalry.

Maybe yeah....

But outdoors hardcourt or grass i think Maria is going to win 80%

Indoor or on clay Martina about 60%

I think out of current players the Venus Vs Davenport rivalry my favourite

Lindsay leads Venus 14-13

On Hardcourt Lindsay leads 11-9
on clay lindsay leads 1-0
on Grass Venus leads 4-0
Indoors Lindsay leads 4-1

9 of their matches have been 3 setters

There are a couple of upcoming rivalries such as Venus v Sharapova, Pierce v LenaD. I dont think Sharapova v Hingis is that exciting to be honest. There was more of an excitment for lena v henin really

i think sharapova is too good to start that good of a rivalry to be honest she will win too mant of their matches for it to become one but fans will look forward to their meetings.

It could be a good rivalry, mix of styles. Maria has the edge on fast surfaces but Martina might have the ascendancy on clay.

No.

the Sharapova/Henin story is on the verge of being a great rivalrie.
The matches the two brought up this year were of great qualtity.

I think we'll have a lot of Sharapova/Henin finals this year and coming years.

They've already played 3 times, that's pretty amazing. I think this could be a great rivalry. Hopefully they'll play like 5 more teams this year icluding in some Grand Slams!!

I don't think so. I don't see Martina beating Maria again (even on clay)

They may play each other a few more times, but I don't think it will be much of a rivalry. Masha will dominate.

I think Marias big rivalry is Justine. They've met in this year 2 times, and I hope 3rd meeting will be tomorrow. JHH leads in this year 2-0, it's time to revenge. They played every time great matches. So good luck Masha tomorrow! :)

Rivalry now? I don't think so. But I do have a feeling that in the long run there is some potential rivalry between them growing. It's similar to Venus vs Martina in the past. Maria hates loosing to Martina (or anyone) as much as Martina to Maria. And with the difference in style, we might see a lot more good matches from them later on in their career.

Anything can happen, so it's possible, but at the present time I don't see much of a rivalry. Their last match up was good and had some really nice moments, but the whole match was in Sharapova's hands- from begining to the end. Looking at their other matches, all have been won in straight sets, not much of a contest.

For a short while, Hingis and Lindsay might be able to pick up where they left off and continue having a good rivalry. As for Maria, even though she keeps finding herself on the losing end, she's building a nice rivalry with the Belgians. She hasn't beaten either of them in a while and if a real rivalry is to occur then that'll have to change. At this point in time I see more potential with Justine (and possibly Kim) for a rivalry, than I do with Hingis-Sharapova.

At the present time, the only real rivalry that Sharapova has going on is with Serena- and it's almost been two years since they've last played. I guess she sorta has one with Lindsay, but it's not as exciting as a match up.

Sharapova's Best Rivalries on court:
Serena
Lindsay

Developing Rivalries:
Justine
Venus
Kim
Hingis
...she needs more matches against them before the real excitement can begin.

It's got a long way to go to be a rivalry. The reality is, Sharapova hasn't played anybody enough times to establish any kind of rivalry.

Respectfully disagree with ya' on that. Serena vs. Masha is definitely a "REAL" rivalry with every ingredient there for a real exciting match-up.

Respectfully disagree with ya' on that. Serena vs. Masha is definitely a "REAL" rivalry with every ingredient there for a real exciting match-up.I'm focusing on the players history and attitude vis-avis playing each other, to the exclusion of the feelings of fans of players, or the media.

Serena vs Jennifer Capriati is a rivalry. Lots of matches, lots of seventh games needed to win sets, lots of three setters, both players feeling, rightly or wrongly, that they were cheated out of a match at some point. (Of course, Capriati feels that way after virtually any close loss.)

Venus vs Hingis, or Hingis vs Davenport, or Venus vs Davenport. Any of those, both players are drawing on a long history of playing each other, in all kinds of emotional and physical situations.

Serena vs Sharapova has only two significant matches in it, the 2004 Wimbledon final, and the 2005 OZ semis. And neither of them was controversial, just surprising. It's just not a big enough body of work. It's a matchup the media has really hyped, but in reality, it's a matchup of two players who haven't played each other often, neither of whom even have a current GS final to their credit. They both have much more important things to worry about than each other.

It is, however, a rather pleasant prospect as a first round match at Roland Garros.

Today's match has a lot more meaning to the players than Sharapova-Hingis.
There is a whole back story between Elena and Maria.

Even though Vee is losing the rivalry, I love it whenever they meet! It's just like an instant classic each time. :D :yeah:
