Maria cruises into the finals of IW. She beat Martina in two straight sets. Martina was doing to many easy mistakes in the first set and Maria just overpowered Martina. In the second set there were more long points and Martina wasn´t doing so many unforced errors. Martina came back from 4:1 down to 3:4 it was getting close there. It was a pretty good match. :)

I guess the all-knowing Marshmellow's prediction of Martina "desecrating" Maria wasn't even close. Maria blew Powder-Puff off the court.

that was SUPER Maria!!!! :woohoo:
I'm reeking about the game where Maria hit a winner one the line, I mean ON the line, but the linesmen called it out... but it seems Maria won anyway so all good! :yeah:
That makes it 2-1 in the H2H! :woohoo:

the scoreline was a lot closer than what it really was.all the games were close a lot of deuces.it was a good match maria didnt blow her off the court.

Yeah, I think that it clearly shows that she is a witty player and has talent but still is being overpowered by top players, she lost pretty easily to dementiva, mauremo, sharapova and henin. She would suit a 8-10 position in the rankings now...

Martina didn't play very well, way too many errors and she missed some easy shots, but it was a hard battle out there and I would have loved to see Martina hold her serve more often, she was overpowered too many times... She also looked a bit tired, but Maria played very well, full credit to her!

the interesting side effect of these Maria-Martina matches is that Maria is actually learning to play smarter tennis and do it quite well - its not only Hingis making a come back out there.

I think "cruising is a bit strong" - nearly all the games went to deuce! But Masha!!!! :worship: Aside from the odd bad game or two, I don't think it would be over-exaggerating to say that that was some of the best tennis I have EVER seen from her...Some gruelling rallies, and amazing shots. Her movement was unbelievable. And those two shots at 4-1 in the second! They were just MOUTH-WATERING. A great semi-final and I cannot wait to watch Dementieva v Henin-Hardenne at 10...If it's half as good as this was, I am in for a treat! :hearts:

Well done

My sweet Marti wasnt as clean as she usaully is and served like she did in 2002 :o but her movement was amazing also and she was really hitting hard!

Well,Maria played great, but her behaviour... She can really annoys me.It's sport, but she's like it was some kind of war!!That tightened fist, that lethal look at Martina -those really aren't athletes gestures. Martina can bring some smile at least-Maria cannot, why? And when she hit a ball out-she's like:OMG is it really out, can't be!
Maybe it's due to her father lessons, but she should learn some of humility and modesty.
Awful performance of Martina, had some chances, didn't make use of them. As a matter of fact,it's her third month after the break and I believe she'll find the way to beat her next time.

Wow Maria was very good. She is definitely improving and it's clear that she knows how to play Martina. Some of the rallies were breathtaking and Maria seems to have got faster. Even Martina looked very fit and she ran down a lot of balls. Martina didn't play bad at all. Sure she missed some shots, but she was constantly put under pressure. It was the best match of Indian Wells so far. I think Maria will be too tired for Justine tomorrow (should Justine win).

You know what I think? There's the Maria-beauty-hype going on (I don't really get it why, but whatever). So, she could do some modelling and posing and earning thousands of dollars with it. But she seems a 100% out there and brings so much passion and fighting spirit on the court: that's what I really like about her. Besides: if she would smile once in a while, there would be 5 threads popping up about how bitchy and arrogant she was... tricky situation, but I think Maria couldn't care less.

Reminded me a bit too much of the 1995 matches between Agassi and Wilander, especially the New Haven (6:3, 6:3 Agassi). Hingis' talent and craft is undeniable, and what she demands of the power-hitters is a great deal of patience, grit, control, accuracy...... However, she's on the defensive much too often to control things out there, and it really calms a power-hitter to be able to start 1/3-1/2 of Hingis' service games at 0-30. Maria had to stay calm, focused, determined and intelligently aggressive. All things that she naturally does well anyway......

Martina has had a great come back and she has such a nice game to watch, but if she wants to be a top-5 player she needs to really work with her serve and strenght.

oh my god now youre still looking for somthing negative to say, for gods sake did you not see the handshake at the net maria was being really nice and it was martina who didnt have the smile on her face! maria played a great match but needs to work a lot on her serve but it was quite windy out there. as far as the final goes tommorow i dont think maria will be too tired, well she will be tired but if justine beats elena she looked very tired against dulko and will surly have a tough match off dementieva, also justines played yesterday today and tommorow and maria had a day off yesterday, played this morning so will also have that advantage, i think if maria improves her serve she has a brilliant chance on todays performance, and all i can say is rock on to the finals maria!
and remember...
lets go masha!!!

Very well played match, especially by Maria. Much closer than the scoreline. Martina does need a serveing coach, as she is on defense too often when she is serving. Hopefully, it will be a Justine-Maria final tomorrow as Elena has little chance against an inspired Maria.

The thing is that Martina no longer wins, when she plays average. Of course Maria played a good match, but Martina was never into it. Martina should have attacked more, especially with her forehand, and come to the net. Alas, better luck next time, Martina!

You can't be serious!! Maria needs to learn humility and modesty?? You kind of have the wrong person, don't you?:tape:

Anyway, I was having lunch in our break room and only got to see the first set. I was totally impressed with the way Maria came in and hit those winners out of the air and also how she hit down the lines. She also ran Martina ragged. It was really a good match. Can't wait to see the second set when I get home.

I think Maria only lost that first meeting against Martina because Martina got into her head with trash talking. I can't see Maria losing to her again.:fiery:
ESPN showed an interesting stat about Martina's wins: 2-5 against top 10 players (2-6 after today) and 18-1 against all others. So, she's feasting on the lower ranked players but can't get by most of the top 10. That's about what I thought.

Hopefully with time, Martina will be more used to the grind of having to play multiple good matches in a row. It'd be nice if someone could pull the "nothing special" quote up because most of the people misuse it :). It wasn't said in the bitchy sense ;). Great tournament though Marti, definitely more than I could have hoped for, even though the losses still sting. It's weird to be expecting her to be in the final of a Tier 1 this soon back, but it's happening. Good luck in Miami.

martina lost to henin clijsters mauresmo and sharapova(2times)...
maria lost to henin(2 times) and hingis

martina beated maria and linsday
maria beated martina and linsday

martina record 2/6 in 7 tournement
maria record 2/3(2/4 after final against justine) in 4 torunament

i don't see great differences between the two players...

bad lines call dont win matchs
is in times like this that we see hou tought mentaly is the player
IMO Maria can really win even with loads of bad lines call

we wont have that problem in MIAMI

So Hingis' highly rated anticipation against power hitters seems to be only good for helping her to recognise unreachable winners fraction of the second before than rest of the spectators!! ;)

Mar 17th, 2006, 09:36 PM
I think we saw Hingis was limited. She can't win over hardhitter as consistent as Maria to top5 anymore.. Lindsay was not focused enough on her match. Moreover when Lindsay played normally, there was no show, she was clearly superior. So I think people shouldn't expect Marti to win over players like Maria anymore

And a title continues to elude Hingis. She just can't seem to beat two or three top players in a row and if this continues she will only be a QF/SF queen at slams. Not something Martina expects out of herself

Was it a slam final?:rolleyes::tape:

Maria knows what a big match this was. Martina is a great player, no doubt about it. And she's only been playing on the tour for a few months; she can only get better, imo.

She isn't even back for 3 months now, no one expected her to be this far so soon or did you?

In a few months time she will be able to beat top seeded players more frequently I think :worship:.

Well,Maria played great, but her behaviour... She can really annoys me. It's sport, but she's like it was some kind of war!!That tightened fist, that lethal look at Martina -those really aren't athletes gestures. Martina can bring some smile at least-Maria cannot, why? And when she hit a ball out-she's like:OMG is it really out, can't be!
Maybe it's due to her father lessons, but she should learn some of humility and modesty.

Humility and modesty don't help you win on court. Those were never Martina's virtues, either. As her fan you should know this. As for her gestures, do yourself a favor and get out of your box to watch some sports (not just women's tennis). You may be unpleasantly surprised with the words, looks, gestures and occasional killer/war mentality.

Congratz Maria! Well, just take your time Martina. Furthermore, I have to say that there is no such thing as power like Martina never seen before with Williamses. Cause the Williamses can stay very closely with Maria power-wise. Just give her sometime to figure it out. But nice win for Maria. And although Martina may have played bad, but Maria has to take advantage of that to win. What good if your opponent makes all the error but you can't take advantage of it. So kudos Maria! and better luck next time Marti! You've taken out Lindsay and that is a feat for you already, you've finally got your age long revange! So get rested for Miami!

I think we need to give martina a full year on tour to get back the groove before we start writing her off as a QF/SF queen.....

Congrats to maria though!

IF Hingis is smart, she won't play until late april. Time to rest (her biggest rest period so far has been two weeks between Pan Pacific and Dubai) and improve serve.

Now it's clear she belongs to the top ten. To win slams ('coz i think it's her main goal) you need a better serve. Maybe at RG she has a chance with her current form, but not elsewhere

I'm not a fan of Sharapova's grunting or the media circus that surrounds her but sometimes on court her tennis speaks for itself - I thought she was very impressive today. If only Martina had served a little better and cut out a few needless errors this may have gone to three sets and been even more competitive. The scoreline is deceptive - Maria was made to work hard to win.

There were a couple of rallies where the defensive shots from both players were outstanding and they got the morning Californian crowd cheering which is good to see. Too many matches here where the crowd are pretty silent.

I look forward to seeing Martina and Masha play each other again. Their contrast of styles makes for fascinating matches.

Looks like Hingis' win over Sharapova was a FLUKE.
I'm sorry but that's such a ridiculous comment. If she beats her several times, then you might say it was a fluke. Until then, the jury's out.

Blah, Hingis played like shit. :o

All credit to Maria though, I was  at her amazing control of the ball. I think it's definately the best match she's played since last years AO semis, she did everything great except serve (which was pretty good too). Marti just made too many silly errors, oh well, GREAT week anyway. :D Best of luck to both in Miami.

god ryan when will you learn the reason maria won was becasue she outplayed martina, and the reason you think hingis played like shit was because maria didnt allow her to play, martina said after the match there was nothing more i could do except have more stamina! i told you sharapova would win cause shes the better player and she proved that tonight!

Welll it was a great match from Masha on all accounts nearly she fought so hard, her movement has improved out of sight and she was striking the ball so well giving Martina so few opportunities. Well done Masha good luck against Elena in the final

I was rooting for Martina because I really enjoy her impressive comeback run!!! However, Maria put up an impressive display of power game today and Martina didn't have a chance.

Maria was playing one of her best matches in her career..... moving well, hitting the balls with power and angle, and her drive volleys were simply impressive!

Martina wasn't allow to play her smart game, in fact she was being forced to be on defense almost 95% during the match. She must have been shocked by Maria's great movement and retrieving skills.

A nice and convincing win by Maria!

Martina, you have done very well again! Hope to see you to have another good run at Miami!

You fucking quoted me, and then said that I didn't give Maria credit? READ. Martina did NOT play near her best, and I never said that Maria didn't force her into many of those errors. Maria was hitting the ball SO well that even if Hingis was playing better, it may not have mattered. All I was saying was that Hingis made bad errors throughout the match, on her own. Deal with it shit-head.

Jo Durie on Eurosport reckoned that was the best she'd seen Maria play in 2006 and 2005.
I agree, I thought it was the best I had seen from her since she won Wimbledon. :worship:
It was a very entertaining match, esp. the second set. Martina didn't play badly, def. not her best, but that's ok...She is learning a lot from these losses, especially with Melanie looking on taking notes... I don't think she needs a serve coach, she just needs a bit of time w/ mom to fix it...she has about a week. It was looking good in the past few tournaments, but def. gave her some trouble at IW in all of her matches, and she couldn't get away with it today, P

Great win Maria! Congrats! :bigclap: :bounce:

From the first game on, I knew the match was in Maria's hands. She was in control for the most part and was in no danger of losing the match. Just a good win all around but I dont undertand why several people have said it was Maria's best match in a while. I dont think so but oh well...

Try to work on that serve though Maria! A higher first serve percentage and more aces will be really helpful in the final against Elena. I hope you win your first title of the year Maria! :D Fight hard and do your best! :clap2:

I was at the match. Martina didn't play her absolute best tennis, making too many errors and not serving up to what she can do. She hit no aces.

But she lost mainly because Maria played some of the best tennis I have ever seen her play. Her serve may not have been spectacular, but she made very few mistakes off the ground. It was one of her cleanest games ever, and with all that power, she got the best of Hingis.

But they had some truly amazing rallies that drew oohs and ahhhs from the crowd again and again. It was very dramatic stuff and, with Hingis beginning to do a little better in the second, it could have gone to a third set, had a few key points went the other way.

And, for those of you who are being negative about Martina, you might not like this but the fans were very respectful of Maria, except for one or two idiots, but in general, the crowd was 100 percent behind Martina. When it was over, the fans gave Martina a thunderous ovation as she walked off the court, far greater than the cheers for Maria.

Hingis has become a fan favorite.
