When I heard that Serena withdrew from the Nasdaq I knew that there were going to be many post on this topic. I never thought that she had this kind of effect on people, both haters and fans. After checking out the many tennis message boards I have finally realized that this woman truly have cast a spell on many people. With a big match between Sharapova and Hingis coming up later today I truly believed that more people would have been hyped about this than the news that Serena has withdrawn from a tournament. What current player on tour generates this kind of passion from both fans and foes? Serena is desperately needed on the tour whether you love her or hate her and I hope she comes back soon.

Miss Maria Sharapova generates alot of posts whether she WITHDRAWS FROM Tennis Tournaments/poses in magazines/loses/wins...so she's up there w/ SERENA as the "HEARTBEAT of the WTA"

Well at this time with the return of Hingis it will be very interesting having both William sister (healthy and fit of course) on tour. And if some of the younsters (Vaidisova, Krajicek, Azarenka,...) improve and become a real thread could make the circuit even more interesting (like veterans against youngers again)

Actually Venus is. Just take a closer look at the WTA's logo.

Not in America, Serena's matches still get the highest ratings of all players in America and she also still gets more media play in the USA. Serena's story and personality will always be more enduring in America because she made her own name with her athletic accomplishments. Sure Maria will cash in on her "look" and be worth tons of money (maybe more than Serena eventually), but no about of money or popularity can buy you status as a legend. It's like comparing Sabitini and Graf.

I agree Serena is loved and hated by many people thatís what make her the major star she is today, I think Maria in the future will get the same amount of attention because she also a divisive person you either hate her or love. They both Serena and Maria just have that star quality.

She is certainly not the Meatbeat of the WTA

I think Serena is a lot like Helen Lawson. I can just see Serena barking, "The only winner that comes out of a tournament entered by Serena Williams is Serena Williams, and that's ME, baby, remember?"

There you go with your same bullshit all over again.

There is nothing divisive about Maria. If she were that divisive, she wouldn't have any sponsors. Its just the nut-cases :cuckoo: out there who look for things to hate in everyone.

I think that the Tour is in desperate need of the Williams to return to form. Whether I like them or not is not the point. The Tour needs stars. Ask non-rabid tennis fans about Petrova, Dementieva, Ivanovic and Myskina, and they go who? But ask them about Serena and Venus. Even Maria is not the household name many would like to think she is. And she certainly doesn't generate the media interest S and V did and do. And without media interest in the game...

Which is why sponsors and the press are so excited about Martina's return. Even my Gran has heard of Martina, Venus and Serena and is happy to talk about them with some knowledge of who they are/what they have done.

And everyone always remembers the great stars. Some win Grand Slams and Oscars and no one can even recall who they are or what they did! It doesn't matter how many more Slams Serena wins, she aint going to be forgotten!

The tour is definitely in need of a star and at the moment it is Martina. If you notice since Martina has returned she has definitely taken some of the spotlight from Maria. I don't think Maria minds this because until she wins another title she wouldn't mind the spotlight being off her.

The attention that Serena generates is like nothing else on tour. Hate her or lover her, we can't stop talking about her. Sad we wont get to see her in Miami, I'm having some serious Serena-Withdrawls my damn self. Being a Serena fan isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world, but I'm along for the ride til the very end...

No, I didnít mean it in a negative way, like the WS Maria generates lots of attention and divisiveness on the tour.

I am no Serena fan but believe me, the tour and the fans need a star as bright and as dramatic as Serena. She's an asset to the tour.

Just imagine the possibilities:

Serena vs. Maria
Serena vs. Justine
Serena vs. Mauresmo
Serena vs. Hingis
Serena vs. Clijsters

...anyone of those matchups would be mouth watering!!!
