View Full Version : Has there ever been a match where both players played their best tennis?

I'm not sure I can think of a match where both players played their absolute best tennis. I am a firm believer that the point of tennis is to play your own great game, but to also get your opponent of theirs.

Can you think of one?

Maria v Justine at this years AO semi was an awesome match with both players playing really well.

Also maybe the US Open semi between Masha and Kim was another match with both players playing really well.

I agree, Marat/Roger AO 2005 and Pete/Andre USO 2001. No other matches compare.

I don't think it's immodest to say that Roz and Liz gave the best performances of their careers in '58, but then again, so did I!

Well both Venus Williams and Martina Hingis played their best I think in their semifinal in 2000 at the UsOpen.

And I also think Venus Williams vs. Lindsay Davenport Wimbledon 2005 final.

i dont think anyone can ever really say both players have played their best it just depends on how you look at it. IE to say venus and davenport wimbledon 05 makes me look at head to heads and think lindsay is quite capable of beating venus, and as she didnt, she obviously didnt play her best tennis.

Obvviously one player will always play better than another ona set day hence why they win a match. gotta rise your game.

I don't know about it being their "best", but I was just recording Graf vs. Venus '99 Wimbledon onto DVD and they were playing some FINE tennis that day. Absolutely a joy to watch.

Dementieva/Capriati USO '04 --- third set only, serve negligible. never seen such fight, heart, and great tennis on the court. i don't like capriati, but she deserved to win just as much as the golden goddess.

The semi in '88 was amazing and didn't Chris lose it on an iffy call? I think there are many matches where both players played there best, otherwise why would anyone enjoy watching these matches...I think if the match is really boring it is a good sign that the players aren't playing their best. Unless you mean 'perfect' which is never going to happen, P

NO WAY! Jennifer played so tight in that first set, and the rest of the match was ruined by the high winds that day. Jen never came close to playing her best in that wind..... had she done so, she would have won the 2004 USO!

Mary vs. Monica at the 2000 French Open. It was close and tense all the way through and I believe there were only 4 service breaks during the match. In my opinion, it's one of Mary's best victories. :)

Their best? That's hard to say. Most recently, I thought Henin-Hardenne & Sharapova both played near the top of their game in the Tokyo final this year.

you do know Lindsay Leads Venus 14-13, and that one of their matches that Lindsay won, Venus retired with an injury right! so that would make them VERY even, so to say Lindsay should win is a very very bold statement.

Anyway, i dont agree that Vensu/Lindsay match was their best, as i have seen ebtter from both, but it was pretty darn close.

Maybe Maria/Venus 2005 Wimbledon. Although Venus wasa forcing some errors there so not really.

Venus did not play her best against Lindsay, except for when she was already down. At that point it was Linday's best against Venus's best, and of course Venus's is just better.

I think you missed the great point you made in a suttle way.
The best game you play will allways be affected by the player on the other side.
If they are playing their best game they will constantly make you hit your poorest shot and avoid your best. Therefore you will not play your best game.
Your question says it all instead of me rambling on
no no no impossible.

2003 U.S. Open SF -

(2) J. Henin-Hardenne defs (6) J. Capriati

4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4)

Play was amazing from both players until Capriati had 5 backhand errors in the final set tiebreak.

I actually think neither of the two played that well. None forced the points really, just very tentative play from both.
