Looks like Eurosport is showing a few matches live almost every day, starting on Sunday. Also both of the semifinals and most likely the final. I hope some of them are Maria's matches. :) Well atleast the semis and the final, hopefully.

Best of Luck, Maria!

yeah she has a great chance once she doesnt come up against justine, which is highly likely i can see it now semis maria will be drawn against justine! that would be terrible hopfully lindsey will be drawn to meet justine and lindsey will beat justine and maria in the other semi will beat somone like petrova and beat lindsey in the final thats the only way i can see maria winning cause i dont really see her beating justine although she was tired in the final and will dafinitly want revenge!
so good luck masha!
and remember...
lets go masha!!!

I agree the level of tennis Maria has been playing has been great shes very capable of winning this tournament just seems that JHH is a thorn in the side for Maria and hopefully Maria can get rid of the thorn!! Good Luck Masha!

Maria has the beating of everyone in this tourney apart from Henin, I just hope they are in separate halves of the draw so they can fight it out again in the final.

Justine will either go with Lindsay or Maria's halves, so let's hope Lindsay can do the job for Maria, and Maria can take the final in 3 :p
Nah... Maria can beat Justine, she did so last year. I'm sure if the crowd helps her and no bad calls come her way...
Win the title, Maria! We believe you can do it!

I don't like to have a go at eurosport cause there awesome for wta tennis but honestly you never know from one minute to the next what the hells on,for dubai and doha I just set my capture software to record all day,I got allsorts of crappy sports,I mean handball?lacrosse whats that all about then? I have never in my life seen handball or lacrosse played in england so why show it on british eurosport and who's gonna watch it,and looking at the different tv schedules(in this case eurosport.ru) I wonder what the hell the russians make of snooker which is basically a british pub game as is darts which there showing live this month, can't wait for that

Maria has a great chance to do really well and possibly in this title. She will probably be seeded 3 like last year. Justine will probably be the favourite and will be tough to beat bt Masha is also in with an awesome chance, she has a winning record ofcourse against Lindsay but it looks to be out of those 3 for the title. Good luck Masha, i hope she can excersise the demonds of last year.

bad news guys.
here are the seedings for indian wells
#1 justine
#2 davenport
#3 maria
this means that most likely maria will have to play justine in the semis well i think thats how it goes, which could mean a potential semi final loss. allthough i heard in iw they are very fast hard courts which makes the ball skid and have a low bounce this should favor players like dav and masha rather than justine, but remember what happened last year she lost to dav love and love...(dont wanna bring it up) but hopfully maria will get to at least the semis and maybe beat lindsey and dav which is not impossible and either is masha winning the title,
but remember...
lets go masha!!!

depends on the draw...
some tournies use 1-3 2-4
others use 1-4 2-3

yeah but maria needs ranking points if she wants to stay in the top 4 otherwise shell only be expected to reach the quaters which is the case now, and maria is more likely to lose to justine than she is to lindsay and i want maria to get to beat lindsay so she can put last years 'incident' behind her for good(she has but gm haters cant)
anyway good luck maria!

great thanks for that, how do they work this out?last year maria 3 played dav 1 in sf,is it just a random draw?

Andy.
Mar 6th, 2006, 09:52 PM
That is a very favourable draw indeed, there doesnt seem to be anyone in her section that Masha cant hande and it will allow her to really build her form you would think for a Semi final showdown with Lindsay or maybe even Hingis.

Yup I know the draw is great. If everything works out well, she should be in the semi against Davenport. And I hope she finds a way to get revenge for the double bagel she got at the semis here last year. :scared: Anyway, hopefully she reaches the final to have another shot at beating Justine. Maybe Elena D. can take Justine out but I really want Maria to beat Justine and to make that H2H a little better.

Anyway, I dont know where I should bring this up but can you guys join me in reporting tennisjay's posts in GM. I've reported twice in the last two days I think. I really think he/she has crossed the line and should get banned. He/she does nothing but constantly put Maria down. So if we all report his posts, I think we have a strong case.

I don't see ALG as a significant threat to Maria at the moment, before the ankle injury maybe but not now. OK she won last week but that was on the red stuff which bares little relation to the surface at IW, although her wins over Loit and Pennetta were impressive.

It is vitally important that MARIA wins this tournament. She's not won one since Birmingham 2005, and if you look at the tournaments between now and Birmingham 2006, it's a relatively weak draw here, but then it's Miami which is compulsory for all the top players, and then only clay-court tournaments... so it's a distinct possibility that Maria will go into Birmingham without another title to her name if she doesn't get her act together here.

2r: Jamea Jackson looked powerful and athletic against Maria at Birmingham 2004, and looked even more impressive in beating Maria Kirilenko 6-2 6-3 at Birmingham 2005 (I attended both matches). But she's no match for a player of Big Maria's calibre (6-2 6-2 at Birmingham 2004).

3r: Emilie Loit beat Maria 6-3 6-4 at the US Open 2003, but Maria has come so far since then that it should be a non-issue now.

4r: Maria beat Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4 6-2 at Rome 2005 - on clay - but Medina has already won a title (Tier IV Canberra) in 2006. I hope Maria will play cute Shahar Peer instead.

qf: I'm a bit worried about Anna-Lena Grönefeld, who was thrashing Maria 6-1 4-2 at Moscow 2005 when she suddenly retired with a serious ankle-injury. Grönefeld seems to have recovered from that now, as she won her first WTA singles-title at Tier III Acapulco last week, while Maria has to go back to Birmingham 2005 to match that achievement.

A quarter-final against Selesian player Marion Bartoli would be a much nicer draw!

sf: The seedings decree a repeat of Maria's Indian Wells 2005 semi-final against Lindsay Davenport, and we all know what happened there. But Maria has won all four of her other matches against Davenport.

The other dangerous opponent in that quarter is Martina Hingis, who humiliated Maria 6-3 6-1 in the Tokyo semis last month, but Maria avenged that defeat 6-3 6-4 at Dubai. Davenport and Hingis would meet in the fourth round, with the winner almost certain to go through to the semi-finals in my objective opinion, although I'd love to see the sexy Marta Domachowska come through instead!

final: I'm glad to see that Justine Henin-Hardenne is in the other half of the draw, because she's by far the greatest threat to Maria, and quite possibly the only player who could beat Maria in the final - although I'm a bit worried that Elena Dementieva beat Hingis 6-2 6-0 in the Tokyo final right after Hingis beat Maria 6-3 6-1.

But there are so many nice players in the other half, including Tatiana Golovin, Maria Kirilenko, Sania Mirza, Anna Chakvetadze, Ana Ivanovic, Gisela Dulko and Karolina Šprem - how wonderful it would be if one of those girls broke through and reached the final!

World Group: First round (22nd/23rd April 2006)
------------------------

* Russia v Belgium (Liege, Belgium; indoor red clay)

Maria has never played Fed Cup, and she won't be playing in this tie either.

"It's quite untrue that I don't want to play for Russia. I have a Russian heart.

"My body is just not ready after two tough tournaments [Indian Wells and Miami] to go and play Fed Cup. It's my own personal decision, and I'm not going to be influenced by what anyone else does. I won't be forced into it. My body just isn't ready to go from hard courts to clay courts that quickly."

As is always the case Maria will improve as the tournament goes on...I think it was a fine enough start. She was never in trouble and did what was required. The weather disturbances and poor conditions wouldnt have helped but at times that mattered, for example holding to take the 1st set and to set up a 5-3 lead in the 2nd, Masha played very good games.

one thing i am worried about is not only marias shoulder problem, but the fact that she might slip tp #6 if she doesnt get to the semis, and groenfold is looking in top form getting through her second round match(bye first round) with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 performance. she is coming off a win on clay and must be feeling pretty good, cause when youre on clay and youre an aggresive player it is very hard to hit winners but moving on to this quicker surface must give her a lot of confidence and she has adjusted to the conditions very well(note the result). also if maria plays groenfold we dont know how she will react will she be able to get over her nightmare time in moscow knowing she was beating maria, and then getting injured, will she come out more determined than ever and beat masha or will she crumble with the 'i nearly beat her' tag. either way if seeding continue to move on this could be a potential tough match for maria, and if the weather continues to be cold and damp it can only make her shoulder worse. maybe im getting a bit carried away but i did read somewhere if she didnt defend her semi final loss last year she could slip to #6 in the rankings, but im not sure if this is possible as pierce is not playing due to injury anyone else know if this is possible or not. im probably jumping the guns a bit and we should just let maria win each match as it comes, but this potential clash is worrying me cause although maria played terrible in moscow with overcoming her injury and being forced to play i still think this could be a match groenfold might win, i dread to think of this clash!

Well Raymond brings a lot of different stuff to the table and she will really test Masha, they played earlier this year and Masha won in straight sest but it was a tough match, She will have to play well to get thru this but if she does it sets her up nicely for the rest of the tournament. Good luck Masha

Steve-o

Shahar Peer is not a player whose chances against Maria we should arrogantly dismiss. Shahar gets a lot of balls back, which is Maria's toughest type of opponent. She took a set off Maria at Beijing 2005.

yeah i risked getting up at 3am to watch the match on eurosport but fair dues to es cause they showed the match live, maria played great in the first set, in the second had chances early on but missed mainly due to anas serve and a few close bad line calls, and callings of out from the crowd. but overall maria upped her game at the end of the second set to get through although she could have won it 6-1. good news is i didnt really notice that marias first serve percentage was so low, as her second serves were good. other good news is she broke ana 5 times who has a good serve and only got boken once in a poor game from maria. anyway next up is hingis!

what would you give as a percentage of maria to win this match.

After what happened at Tokyo, and what happened at Dubai, I think this is a 50-50 match.

One thing in Maria's favour is that it starts at 11:00 PST (19:00 GMT). Hingis admitted in her last press-conference (http://www.pacificlifeopen.com/en/players/interviews/2006/hingis315.asp) that she doesn't like playing in the morning.

I think this match is so important for Maria's confidence (not to mention getting to the final of a tier 1!). Maria may have learned from playing Martina twice but Marti is an expert at learning her opponent's game and will not be easily beaten.

Watching Maria's match against ALG, I was impressed with her attitude, aggression and determinatuion to win, which carried her through despite a poor First Serve %age. (The first serves though were great.)

So if Maria plays that well or better, she has a good chance. I think it depends a lot on which maria turns out today.

Maria hit sooo many winners today :hearts: movement also not a weakness today.
At this rate, she can definitely handle Justine or Elena if her serve holds up. :D

So impressed :worship: Maria played great in the first set and looked really calm and confident from the beginning, the BH was in imperious form along with awesome drive volleys to finish off the points.

Second set was tough, Martina came out of her comfort zone and started taking the attack to Maria. I think Maria got a little tight at times but showed great fight to close out the match.

Maria's movement has improved out of sight, her defence was better than I've ever seen it today.

Looking to the the future, on quick surfaces it's a match up that Maria will only lose if she plays poorly. Good as Hingis is, she just can't live with Maria's power and accuracy.

Hope it's LenaD in the final :o but if not, on this form Maria has a great chance of winning anyway :D :wavey:

From what I've seen, Maria has improved her play in every match. She was very determined and focused, except for the few selected double faults, and she didn't really let Hingis into the game. And yeah, her movement is incredible at times. Hard work paying off.
Hopefully she can bring this form into the final, and even improve a bit. If so, she really has a great chance to take the title. :)

Best of Luck for the Final, Maria! :bounce:

maria you have to win this one! you deserve it, elena already has a tier 1 this year, and you i think have played better than her especially by getting to the semis of austrailia. maria said in her interview that she knew dementieva's game very well, but that it would be a tough match as she is playing great tennis. maria i think should win this if lindsay can really closely lose to elena at usopen, then you can beat her, if its a baseline battle with your serve you should win, and even in the third set if you fight youve got it. but its very important maria that you dont have a second set blip or get tight or nervous, pump yourself up, be aggresive, a bit like the match against lindsay at yec champs, and youlle win no probs. youve also got to attck elena's serve, but be careful of the slice on the second serve. anyway enough said. do your thing maria!

A very good win for Masha against a Hingis who tried everything. But after the surprise of Tokyo, Maria knows what Hingis has in her armoury now, and had what it took to counter it.

I was very impressed by maria's determination and movement skills and the fact that she had so many great shots in the rallies. Hopefully she can improve her 1st serve rate in the final and play at least as well overall.
