DAVENPORT, SHARAPOVA, HENIN-HARDENNE COMMIT TO THE 2006 PACIFIC LIFE OPEN

Eight-Time Pacific Life Champion, Former Wimbledon Champion, And Defending French Open Champion Will Lead Top Sony Ericsson Players To 31 st Annual Pacific Life Open

Indian Wells, Calif., January 18, 2006 –Lindsay Davenport, an eight-time Pacific Life Open champion; Maria Sharapova, a former Wimbledon champion; and Justine Henin-Hardenne, the defending French Open champion, have all committed to the Pacific Life Open, to be held March 6-19, 2006, at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. These are just a few of the women’s tennis stars that will compete in the most-attended non-Grand Slam tennis tournament in the world.

Davenport, who has accumulated eight Pacific Life Open singles and doubles crowns, won six titles last year in addition to reaching the finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Sharapova, the 2004 Wimbledon champion and worldwide celebrity, won three tournaments in 2005, rising to the No. 1 ranking for a brief period. Henin-Hardenne, the 2004 Pacific Life Open champion, produced a strong showing in 2005, winning at the French Open, her fourth Grand Slam title, as well as three other tournaments.

Other Sony Ericsson players committing early to the tournament include Mary Pierce and Elena Dementieva. Pierce enjoyed a career renaissance winning two titles in addition to finals appearances at the US and French Opens. Dementieva also produced a strong campaign reaching the finals at three events, including the season-ending Tour Championship, as well as cracking the Sony Ericsson Tour Rankings Top Ten for the third straight year.

Superstars Anastasia Myskina and Tatiana Golovin of Russia, Nathalie Dechy of France, Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia have provided early commitments to the tournament as well.

The 48-player women’s qualifying draw will take place Monday, March 6 and Tuesday, March 7, and feed 12 players into the main draw, which will open on Wednesday, March 8. The women’s final will be held on Super Saturday, March 18, which also will feature men’s semifinal action.

Mar 5th, 2006, 02:39 PM
Masha will be #13 seed (unless someone else will withdraw) and that means she will have to play against #1-4 in the 4th Round so Quarter can be difficult to achieve, but who knows ;)

Draw will be made tomorrow...

Keraj
Mar 6th, 2006, 11:50 AM
Oh, I forgot about last WC (which will presumably go to a Top 20 player) so Masha will probably end up being #14 seed... which doesn`t change anything, she will have to play either Davenport, H-H, Sharapova or Dementieva in the 4th round. Of course if everything goes according to plan ;)

BTW, Does anyone know what happened to Walt ? Its kind of hmmm... strange without him. I hope he is OK and will come back soon :)

I was asking the same thing about Walt. He must be really busy with his job, I hope that is it instead of something happening to him. I hope he is alright and will come back. :)

A pretty good draw actually. She should make it to the 4th round and maybe even the quarters. Masha beat Ivanovic the last time, so the mental block is no longer there.

(4)Yan/Zheng vs Asagoe/McShea
Bartoli/Groenefeld vs Russell/Vanc
Gullickson/Tu vs Birnerova/Domachowska

As for the singles, bottom half of the draw plays first, so Masha will probably play on Saturday as she is in the top half.

Semifinal, they can meet in the semi ;)
Actually its a pretty tough draw for Masha&Gisela as they have Yan/Zheng (AO champions) in the quarter. Hard to predict who will win that one...

Mar 8th, 2006, 06:49 PM
I'm just happy to see Masha & Gisela playing together again. They're such a good doubles team. They need to play together more often. They have a realistic chance to make the year end doubles championship, but they'll need to play together more than once every 5 tournaments.

The draw isn't bad, isn't great. Yan/Zheng will be tough but they're beatable.

I think that will depend on Gisela. Maria will obviously be playing the bigger tournaments. Like the Middle East tournaments, Maria played there while Gisela decided to do the clay tournaments.

I hope they play together more often as well. :)

Dulkolenko lost 2-6 6-2 5-7  Masha&Gise saved 2 match points at 4-5 (15-40), and one more at 5-6 (0-40) but that was all...

In singles, Masha plays against Asagoe on Saturday

Shinobu Asagoe (JPN) d. Karolina Sprem (CRO) 64 46 63

and it was only second win in 2006 for Shinobu, her record this year is 2-6, so I can`t see her beating Maria.

Yeah, Isee masha winning too, but Asagoe isn't that bad, we need to remember that!

Well, I`m not saying Maria will beat her 60 61, but anything other then a straight sets win for Masha would be a surprise to me. I know that Asagoe was around the Top 20 or so last year but she had won just two matches this year and was broken 7 (seven!) times by Sprem. I`m always very cautious about Masha`s chances but I don`t think Shinobu will trouble Maria.
The draw is good for Masha and lets hope she will take advantage of that. One thing which is worrying is that left knee brace... again :(

Yeah I know :awww:. After a couple of tournaments on hard courts she always ends up with this brace (ok not always but pretty often) and that`s worrying :( .

A Calleri (ARG) vs N Massu (CHI)
X Malisse (BEL) vs F Santoro (FRA)
M Kirilenko (RUS) vs S Asagoe (JPN)

A bad day for Maria. She lost rather easily to Anna Chakvetadze 6-3, 6-2.

Maria didn't serve well at all. She got just 10 1st serves in in the 1st set. She won 7 of the points but that is too few 1st serves in. She served just 43% in the 1st set and had 5 double faults. Maria served a little better in the 2nd set getting 61% of her 1st serves in. She had two more double faults in the 2nd set.

Maria didn't really return the ball well either. She won just 13 points off of Chakvetadze's serve. Anna in turn won 30. Big difference. This is a little surprising considering how well Maria had been returning and the fact that Anna really doesn't have a dominating serve.
Time to regroup and prepare for the next tournament.

Anna really doesn't have a dominating serve.

I have to disagree with you there. The times I saw Anna play last year, she was pretty reliable at holding serve - a lot of service-winners and one-two punches.

But this result is a big surprise, simply from the fact that Maria has been on much better form than Anna since Anna's loss at the US Open.

I have seen Chakvetadze in person several times. I like her as a person and as a player but her serve gets her in trouble a lot. Her serve isn't dominating. When she's on, she gets it in but doesn't have a lot of power on. When she's off, well it isnt pretty. I've watched her lose several matches she should've won because her serve went away.

Still Maria should win more than 13 points on Anna's serve. It's not like Anna had a ton of aces. It is one thing to only win 13 points off the serve of someone with a ton of aces. Obviously it was just a bad day all around for Maria.

Hmm, Anna's serve sounds a lot like Maria's last year, or when Maria wasn't as solid as she is now. A poster on GM said Maria played badly while Anna hit deep penetrating shots.
