Maria :) Very important win for her. If she wants to become a bigger force and a bigger threat in slams again, she needs to beat the likes of Martina. I saw it from 6-3 3-3 and she was just to powerful for Martina.

Martina obviously was wrong when she put the ball to the throat was acting like Maria was choking

With all that fight and passion she exhibited against Martina, I just don't know how ready Maria will be for semifinals...but Lindsay seemingly had a tough time too so it's all up to who will want the win more...as I said, it's gonna be the survival of the fittest! :D

Sharapova's 1 dimentional game has worked today ! Martina fought well but where was her serve ? Nowhere ! She got too many times broken during her whole tournament...

Sharapova's grunts : Sometimes it was too much :tape: Sharapova was better this time and deserves her victory...

Martina, you know what to do : Work on your bloody serve ! You can do much better than this...

Feb 24th, 2006, 12:26 PM
Also, that match was a lot tighter than the score suggests: 1h40 minutes long for a 2 sets match, Hingis having many game points and break points that she didn't convert:o! Both ladies didn't serve that well but returned very well;)!

Martina was talking as if she will return to her former glory very soon while showing little respect to other players and being very arrogant about it. It's a thin line between competitiveness and arrogance and for someone coming back so early she was showing a lot of latter .
Some of her fans (not you :p ;) ) were talking about slam titles and top rankings and thrashing other players , hopefully they realize some things after this latest defeat and realize there is a long road ahead ;)

You must've been in a different world only seeing what you wanted to see. I can honestly say it wasn't the fans of Marti that predicted more than what she could achieve at this state in time. And where has Martina showed arrogance or cockiness? She was gracious in her defeats this year, especially towards Elena D. You must be really fucked in the head to see these things that never existed.

Wining Slams ? I don't even think about it : this is too early... Martina is still not at her best : a come-back is a long way, you know ! Martina is not arrogant, she has ambitions, that's great for her and tennis in general...
Martina is a top 15-20 player worth right now but to be a top 5-10 player and wining slams for example, it will take time...
Having Martina back is a great thing, her game is indefinitely more beautifull to watch than the 1-dimensional game players...

Denial isn't just a river in Egypt  . Today she was beaten by a player who in her words "is nothing special". Even though Maria had 7 df's , Martina couldn't beat this not " so special player". She has dissed many players recently and in the past. It seems that in her world nobody else is special but herself that is

And some of her fans were just downright delusional thinking she will be claiming her former glory anytime soon. Even with all the injuries, the game has moved on and she will need a lot of time to catch up and it apparently won't happen this year

Some of her other fans and non fans like myself though were genuinely happy just to see her back and this sport needed her to bring more balance to the fray :) :D ;)

I start to think that Maria has more chance versus Martina when she is playing her one-dimensional game, and not trying to show that she can make fancy shots too

I said something to this effect before their match at Tokyo - that Masha's best strategy would be to consistently blast powerful shots that kept Hingis behind the baseline and prevent her from taking charge of the points.

But I have no idea how this particular match went.

Of course and fortunatelly not all fans are literal and extreme. Thank you for proving it :wavey:
As far as Martina goes, her game is balanced and complete with enough offence and defence . I said after Aussie Open she will be a top 15 player by the end of the year but I would be happy for her is she could reach top 10 and in process bounce some of those who inflate their rank by playing every week.

Get a life Ezequiel.
Martina did extremly well at this tournament. She upset two higher ranked players in straight sets, one top 40 one top 15 (12 in fact), and lost to the number 4th ranked player in a fairly good match.

Well good to get your views about Maria exposed in this particular thread. I believe some were led to think that you were a fan of her just because of your opinions regarding Martina that may have reflected a little bit more positively on Maria than you initially intended. That's why on these boards, people have the somehow obligatory "God knows I am no fan of X but..." or something to that effect.

Martina never said that Sharapova isn't a good player. She meant that she's "nothing special" style-wise, which is a totally different thing than dissing her.

I for one have never said that Martina is gonna be the No.1 player in the world again, win majors or any of those things. To put that much expectations on her shoulders would what normally should be regarded as a big success seem like failure in comparison. For me her comeback has been a big success already.

I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from this match though. I'm always amazed how people can say things like,"This match proves this or that...." This match doesn't prove anything except that Masha was the better player today, just like the match from a couple of weeks ago proved that Martina was the better player on THAT day. Beyond that, it proves nothing, least of all what will happen the next time they play.

I would like to see the stats of this match because it appears that Maria beat Martina in straight sets without a decent serve, although she must have made up for it with her strokes.

Way to win while you are not playing your best Maria!:worship: And great that you didn't lose heart or get too nervous after those double faults and lack of a reliable 2nd serve.

Now win the tournament!:bounce:

And keep on playing better and better, Marti!:D

Martina was talking as if she will return to her former glory very soon while showing little respect to other players and being very arrogant about it. It's a thin line between competitiveness and arrogance and for someone coming back so early she was showing a lot of latter .
Some of her fans (not you :p ;) ) were talking about slam titles and top rankings and thrashing other players , hopefully they realize some things after this latest defeat and realize there is a long road ahead ;)
while reading your post,a little story comes to my mind, ezekiel:
as i was going through the pictures on WTA-tour today(i was off for a few days,so there was a lot to look at..)i saw,for example, the "snow exhibition" of maria and lindsay in dubai.and i was impressed,HOW they liked each other(or at least, they surely dont hate  ).and as i saw those pictures,i thought about GM and thought to myself:why are so many folks making such a big mess of how they treat each other???and i came to the conclusion, that the girls themselve seem to have much less problems with each other, than the posters on the board!! so wouldnt it be possible, that, while you are in so much anger about the disrespect of martina vs maria, that,at the same time, they sit together somewhere and talk about anything else but their "rivalry"??
just give it a thought.....

i just have the feel, that many here just want to make a big thing out of a little one.no need for that at all....

Martina was just not patient enough, any other day Martina would have won. Her game is so much more stable. But even so, Martina did not capitalize on the many gifts Maria gave. I think Maria wanted it more than Martina yesterday.

I attended this match. It was SO much fun because of the atmosphere of the crowd and the amazing rallies sometimes. Martina seemed a bit passive and didn't play very well, from what I gathered. Maria's serve let her down at times, but when she was on, Hingis didn't have any answers. Maria really looked like she had a point to prove. Fun match.

I was looking ALL over the crowd for a glimpse of Ali! :p
I got this match on tv - it was competitive, but Martina's level wasn't where it has been this year. Still a great fight by Mash, despite her serving issues.
