Yes, I agree! Sveta played really well, and actually I'm glad Amélie is getting a rest now, I was getting worried about the idea of all these matches in such a short space of time because of the rain yesterday.

Go Sveta!! Win the whole thing now! (Unless Franny beats Justine that is! ;) )

great to see her playing well, especially that forehand she hit down the line in the 1st set  :worship:

she seemed to get a little nervy at the end but pulled it through, hopefully she'll back it up and beat henin

interesting that mauresmo has lost to 2 of the biggest forehands in the game, she didnt look like she knew how to play kuzy (even though she has a good record against her)

Choko returns!

 Yes I'm sure Amélie was so overcome with nervousness at the possibility that she might make it to the semi finals of the event that she choked
So anytime Amélie loses a match it's a choke - it's simply not possible that she can be outplayed by a great opponent playing well on a given day.

Hmmm.... It's a little sad for Amelie, but not seing the match, i get the feeling, all this tennis she hs been playing caught up with her. Just like Doha last year where she got beat by Molik. I wish her the best of luck in Doha – regaining the number one spot would be great compensation.

But all that said, congrats to Svetlana. I hope she WON this match, as it’s about time she started playing well again. She is a great player, very much capable of being top 5 considering she has an all round game.

Good luck svetalana, don’t have beat Amelie in Vain. Consolidate!!!

Real shame for Amelie - another title would have been cool, but she needs to rest, and to comeback strong. She's done well enough these past few weeks. We're ll very proud Amelie. Keep it going please.

It was just a matter of time before Sveta claimed a major scalp - she has way too much talent not to make it back to the upper echelons of the rnakings. Amélie shouldn't be too down, though. After Melbourne, Paris & Antwerp, she deserves a rest now.

Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced to the rain-delayed semi-finals of the WTA Dubai tournament after beating top seed Amelie Mauresmo of France 7/6 (13/11) 6/4. The 2004 U.S. Open champion will face the winner of the match between Justine Henin-Hardenne and Francesca Schiavone later on Friday.

The defeat ended a run of 16 successive victories for Mauresmo that earned her three titles this year, including the Australian Open.

http://i.eurosport.com/2006/02/22/255437-854779-151-113.jpg"She both played very well and I think I was running a little bit out of gas today," Mauresmo told reporters. "These two things combined made it pretty hard to come off the court as a winner.

"It was getting tougher and tougher to keep going, not only physically but in the mind with the focus you have to get almost on each point, day after day, match after match.

"It's very difficult to keep up for two months, three months. But that's the way it is, and I always said it's tough to keep going and I knew this kind of thing would happen some day, but I'm okay with that."

MAURESMO STILL CLOSING IN ON TOP SPOT

The match resumed on Friday after play had been suspended overnight with the Frenchwoman having broken to lead 3-2 in the tie-break.

http://i.eurosport.com/2006/02/24/256105-859156-151-208.jpgBut Kuznetsova settled quickly, levelled at 4-4, and held off three set points before clinching the 22-minute tie-break 13-11 on her fifth set point.

Top seeded Mauresmo made the more positive start to the second set, holding off a break point before breaking to love to lead 2-0.

She also held two break points for a 4-0 lead before Kuznetsova turned the match around, breaking in the fifth game when Mauresmo netted a weak backhand.

"Even if I was 3-0 I didn't really feel in control because I felt she was making some errors," said Mauresmo.

"To come back and break me I thought she played pretty well, very consistent and very aggressive and not making as many errors as at the beginning of that set."

Rallying powerfully from the baseline and also showing confidence at the net, Kuznetsova continued to stretch Mauresmo, who netted a forehand at 4-4 to leave the Russian to serve for the match.

Kim Clijsters will retain the number one ranking next week, but an ankle injury means the Belgian will not defend her title at Indian Wells next month.

That should allow Mauresmo to regain the top spot she last held in October 2004

Congratulations to Sveta on a great win! What makes it even better is that she played some fantastic tennis to get it and against a definitely not choking (if a bit tired) Amelie. I'm not too disappointed about Amelie either. She lost because her opponent played well and she went down fighting. She needs a bit of rest anyway and seeing there are still things she has to work on should ground her a little. Better for her to lose here than in some important final.
