The only player I can think of is Maria Sharapova. #3 in the world. Lost 6-0, 6-0 Pacific Life Open 2005 Semis against #1 Lindsay Davenport .

Has a higher ranked player ever lost love and love to anyone?

1981 Amelia Island, Evert bt. Navratilova 6-0 6-0, I think Navratilova was No.2 at that time.

Navratilova was the No.3 player at the time (had been No.1 though). Chris was No.1 and Tracy Austin No.2.

How the hell did this happen? Was Maria injured or something?

who knows? all that matters is that sharapova didn't play her best, and davenport was unstoppable. maria stayed out there like a big girl and took her beating. she didn't get off the court because there wasn't "enough on her shots."

oh, and to maria's credit, she's beaten davenport every other time they've played. so she wins every time she gets on the scoreboard. lol

we do know Maria was unwell, but as you say:

Chrissie beat Tracy and Martina 6-0, 6-0 during her career!

(Tracy also lost 6-0, 6-0 to Steffi Graf in 1994...but the game had long passed Tracy by  )

Unsubstantiated:
I heard Maria jokingly aluded to the press that she was having her period and was not feeling so 'fresh' that day.

How did it happen?

Well Lindsay knew how to adjust to the windy weather where as Maria didnt know how to handle the conditions.

I agree that was a big part of it. Lindsay just has more options in her game.

She was riding the crimson wave. No further explanation needed.
