Sfar pleased to be a role model for Arab players

By Alaric Gomes, Staff Reporter

Dubai: Tunisian Selima Sfar, the best Arab women's tennis player in the world, is happy to be a role model for tomorrow's stars.

"There is a lot of responsibility in carrying the tag of being the best in the region, but things are much better for the women's sports now than they were a few years ago," Sfar told Gulf News after entering the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Women's Open.

Her first appearance here five years back was the most memorable one as she entered the last four of the inaugural version. She went down to Frenchwoman and close friend Sandrine Testud, but went on to win the hearts of the spectators.

"I think I play a lot with my heart here," she smiled.

Though the better part of her game is way past her, the Tunisian is aware of the responsibility she carries for the emerging youngsters in this part of the world.

"I still have three or four years of tennis left on the Tour," she acceded.

"After that, or most probably even in another one or two years, I could launch some sort of academy or school to ensure that young people from the region can benefit from my experience."

But in a region which seldom witnesses women taking an active role in sport, Sfar knows she is entering a hitherto unchartered territory.

"But someone has to start somewhere. And I definitely feel the need to give it a start," stated the 28-year-old Tunisian.

Sfar is yet to open her account with a title on the WTA Tour, but that is not of too much consequence. The best she has achieved in her career spanning seven years and nearly half a million dollars in earnings, is nine ITF Women's Circuit singles titles.

Yet Sfar is seen as the perfect role model in guiding the destinies of players, especially the women, who want to make a career out of tennis.
