What will the rankings be, respectively, for Hingis and Serena, on monday? (I know it depends on how hingis does this week .. but you can give a best case scenario since Serena isn't playing this week)

But will Martina be able to "top" Serena if they were to play in Miami?

See, I view them both as "tops" which is why I can't see them together at all. It's like saying "Martina Navratilova tops Rosie O'Donnell." Not in this lifetime!

Interesting comments ;).

Hingis has 440 plus 55 for results so far - so that puts her at 495 points, so right now that would put her at #43 in the world. Serena is ranked #44 with 488 points, so if nothing changes they would respectively be ranked #43 and #44 in the world.
Hingis plans to play Miami - and there is speculation that Serena may pull out (but who knows).

And for the record, no, I don't plan to start a new thread every time martina plays. For one to say that these threads are useless, well, I would say - why even respond at all it that is how you feel? The 3 minutes it took you to read and reply could have been used creating a very "useful" thread that I am sure would enlighten us all! ;).

It's really not all that surprising, most of their overlapping careers Hingis has held the higher rank.

I think a lot of people would be surprised to know that Serena has been ranked lower, for most of her career, than a lot of the ladies in the top ten, let's not forget she's only ended the year as the top player once in her career. Don't get me wrong it's strange not seeing Serena in the top ten, but it's not strange seeing lesser players ranked higher- that's how it's mostly been her whole career.

thx for posting these stats. All but one match-up has been on HC, ALL matches have been outdoors, they've never met on grass and only once on clay!!!

By year:
98 Martina,
99 Serena
2000 equal
2001 Martina
2002 Serena

It's high time this rivalry were renewed - they haven't played each other in 4 years!

It will be great to have Hingis play her former contengents again, (Venus, Lindsay, Serena and Jennifer). Of course Jennifer can't make another come back - as she has exhausted the term! We will have to see "Jennifer's back from injury". Martina has already said to stop calling it a comeback for her, as she is now officially back for the second part of her carrer :).

Do you actually think Serena is currently "injured?" She has not played since she lost in the third round of the AO, defeated I think by Hantuchova. I don't remember her looking injured in that match.

It would seem more realistic that Serena has chosen not to play for awhile, for whatever personal reasons she has, or just plain lack of interest in tennis these days. But I don't think you can forever claim she is injured.

Yup Serena was clearly injured at this year's Australian Open. Unless you count being fat and out of shape an injury, Serena wasn't injured. She simply sucks big time at the moment. Once Serena gets back to her fighting form and can play her "full schedule", and Hingis has more events on the computer, then you can start to compare. Right now both girls have played minimal tennis, and Hingis's results are better obviously because she's fit and in form.

her ranking of #44 with 488 points comprises of 9 tournaments played including this years AO!....

because if your insisting she only had 1 tournament in her ranking then she should be out of the top 200 or something since she will only have 62 points for her AO.

It can't be denied that Serena is a player not be written off since history has been wproving to us anytime if Serena want's it she can be up there but please lets just state facts here okay!....

not as strange u cant expect her to be high when she had not so good results in slams + tournaments last year(besides Aussie) and this year lost points from Aussie open and Dubai ( i think she was defending something there a sf or something) and its not making any points cuz she isnt playing while Hingis didnt have anything to defend and with those 5 tournaments she got alot of points for reaching (besides 1 i think) sf and final.

That is funny. Way too funny for you to even comprehend why I'm laughing.

not as strange u cant expect her to be high when she had not so good results in slams + tournaments last year(besides Aussie) and this year lost points from Aussie open and Dubai ( i think she was defending something there a sf or something) and its not making any points cuz she isnt playing while Hingis didnt have anything to defend and with those 5 tournaments she got alot of points for reaching (besides 1 i think) sf and final.

 i really did hit a nerve when i said slow people didnt i?

Sphenx - I don't think you have a clue about how the rankings work. As Junex stated - Serena has a ranking of #44 with 488 points from 9 tournaments in the last 52 weeks. Martina currently has a ranking of #50 with 440 points from 4 tournaments and after Dubai will have enough points from 5 tournaments - that is four tournaments less than Serena - to overtake her.

The number of points Serena dropped from last year at the AO or Dubai has absolutely no effect on her current ranking. If Serena hadn't played at last year's AO and dropped 0 points - she would still have 488 points now and be ranked #44.

Some posters just don't understand this "dropped points" concept. A player's result 52 or more weeks ago has no effect on how many points they have now. Just as Serena's points she got in 2002 have no effect on her points now. "Dropped points" are only of use in comparing a players current ranking to her ranking before.

I don't think its strange, Serena has only played 1 tournament, lost major points and keeps losing more, Hingis isn't losing them points, she is winning them.
Obviously its not a surprise, Serena is crap right now...

ugh....

her ranking of #44 with 488 points comprises of 9 tournaments played including this years AO!....

because if your insisting she only had 1 tournament in her ranking then she should be out of the top 200 or something since she will only have 62 points for her AO.

It can't be denied that Serena is a player not be written off since history has been wproving to us anytime if Serena want's it she can be up there but please lets just state facts here okay!....
To be fair, Serena is still #67 in the 2006 race, ex-aequo with Karolina Sprem ;)

how many points Serena made this year and how many points Hingis made?
she was defending points at this year Aussie and this years Dubai at least and she didnt defend them meaning she lost them. not only that but hingis is playing and scoring points Serena isnt playing so obviously she cant make points thats what i'm saying and thats why i dont see whats so strange of having hingis and all the other players ahead of Serena right now.

But Sphenx, the rankings are calculated for the last 52 weeks, not only current year! Serena played 9 tournaments in the last 52 weeks and it's Martina's 5th, so it is surprising to see Martina ahead of Serena despite playing half the tournaments Serena did!

It will be stange to see Hingis with a higher ranking then Serena next week.

If someone would have predicted that - people would have laughed.

Women's tennis is certainly interesting right now - and Martina H has given a big boost to the excitement factor!

Well, I certainly hope that Hingis is all the motivation Serena needs to get back on track. The past year has been as frustrating for Serena as it has been for her fans.

It's nice to see that Serena is a measuring stick for determining how well your fav is doing, even when Serena is not at her best. That some how seems rather pathetic though.

My thoughts exactly. :hehehe:

Nice to see that Serena can do pretty much nothing for more than a year and still she's "the measuring stick" for excellence.

Methinks the Williams Sisters are already Living Legends in Professional Tennis.

As will Venus Williams. You may have heard of her. She's a 5 time slam winner, world #10 right now, reigning Wimbledon champion, highest ranked African American player...

 I guess I shouldn't be surprised that this thread turned into this. Upon reading the first post, I think people definately over-reacted. IMO the point was "isn't it strange that the two best players of this era are ranked so low, and that Hingis is going to be ranked ahead of Serena so early in her comeback". I don't think it was a dig at Serena - because she is "unfit" and is taking time to make sure she is. I'd rather wait until Wimbledon to see Serena play, if it meant she were 100%, instead of playing at Miami and not being in shape. I think the point of this thread was the situation was just a cool little fact.

BTw, what is so sensitive about stating a fact...

Its a fact that by next week, Martina would be ranked higher that Serena....

Sphenx - if now you are saying it doesn't surprise you because Serena has played so bad this last 52 weeks but Martina has played really well - OK - although I myself am a little surprised Martina has been playing so well and Serena has been playing this bad.

But your earlier reason was about "dropping points" (how anyone still thinks what a player did in a tournament over a year ago has any effect on the rankings which are only based on the last 52 weeks:rolleyes: ) - and that she has only played once this year. I'm assuming from your last post you've finally abandoned those bogus reasons. And that you do now accept that however little Serena has played - she's still played more than Martina - 9 tournaments in the last 52 weeks compared to the 5 tournaments Martina has needed to catch her up.

I'm sure that the only reason these threads (about Ms. S.Williams) keep popping up is because we want you (Williams fans) around. If not for these threads there is really not much business left for most for you on this message board :wavey:

Hingis has earned her current ranking and she is poised to keep climbing.

Hasn't she already played as many as half tournament Serena played and complted last year?
