it's getting irritating.
if it's the grand slam peroid, i can understand.
but this week i've been shut out of the website for many times.
and it's just dubai, a tier 2.
pls admins, is there a way to solve this?
it's really frustrating!

I have been getting a lot of "server busy" error messages lately. Is the web host under attack? It's like there's a Wimbledon Final going on or something. :tape: What gives?

This is my third attempt at posting it due to the Server Too Busy message but:

I dunno but it makes it hard to do livescores for my game and it makes me sad. :crying2:

My first attempt to log on today ended in failure too. I just kept on 'refreshing' and was finally able to post. It was worse yesterday though.
It's been happening for months, so I'm somewhat used to it. I wonder if having a 56K connection makes a difference?

Too many anti-Bush threads - the server was taken to Gitmo for a little chit-chat ;)

Whenever a heated match is in progress this site is at its slowest. Its time to change servers and INVEST in more BANDWIDTH . It makes the experiece on here miserable at times. :wavey:

That's a brilliant idea. Just limit the number of posts a poster can make in 24 hours. Something like 15.

It will be like giving out rep.

I was thinking about making the same thread... I suppose this server is not well-proportioned for so many people: 677 currently, most of them are guests (420, that is 62%!)

The record was quite recently:

Its quite simple..they need to invest in a new server with a larger bandwidth capability... :wavey:

It's terribly annoying don't know what to do about though, would it have any effect to put a limit to the number of guests online at the same time? of course they have a right to be here (we were all guests once) but over 60% of the users online seems like too muck IMO.

If the problem is bandwidth it should be possible to collect a bit of funds to buy more, I certainly wouldn't mind contributing a bit if a donation thing was set up. Anything to get rid of that annoying message!
In fact the only thing I'd rather pay for was to get rid of all the haters who rarely seem to enjoy tennis and only spend precious bandwidth on hateful posts

No way limiting posts is a horrible idea. If the number of guests is the prob then limit that somehow. It would give them some incentive to join rather then cutting off members.

Dear admins and webmasters,

It would be time to oblige guests to suscribe on the forum to read the forum and of course to post messages.. It can solve those " the server is too busy " problems... Since a few days, it isn't great anymore to come here because of " the server is too busy " ...Pls. fix it asap ! Thx for your understanding.

I think that would be a short-term solution at best. I don't think the server cares whether the 700 people looking at the board are comprised of 200 registered users and 500 guests, or 700 registered users. So if all those guests signed up, we'd be back in the same boat...

*JR*
Feb 22nd, 2006, 01:15 PM
That would probably hurt the ad revenue a lot. Though, 2B honest, the compulsive sexually explicit posting that goes on in NT probably makes it almost impossible to get ones like the Tennis Warehouse, etc.

Feb 22nd, 2006, 02:45 PM
(During tournaments, anyway) I recall Poe once saying that its not so much the # of posts as the page reloads IN the livescoring threads. I mean "God forbid" the hundred ppl or so who are repeatedly hitting their F5 key or browser's refresh icon have to observe a 10 or 15 second time limit between page views?

And for anyone who thinks that those repeated clicks help the board's #'s to show potential advertisers, uh uh. (The key # there is "unique visitors", measured ova a month I believe). Obviously, while some repetition helps, an advertiser doesn't care much whether UC their ad 50 times or 5,000 in a month, you've been exposed to it either way.

I'd say it's a good idea to prohibit guests from viewing the board. Make them register.

How does that help? If all 700 people viewing the board are registered users, you still have 700 people viewing the board...

That is precisely what happened when tried this a couple years ago. It's not a practical solution and it also puts even more pressure on us to handle requests for new accounts.

Maybe live scoring threads should be removed. If you want to do live scoring go to chat. But the server was still acting screwy late at night for me (-6 hrs GMT) when there were no tournaments or anything else going on.

would limiting guest just seeing the main page make any difference and if they want to go further they have to register

I have a solution!
only registered members can read messages !!
no guest !

griffin
Feb 22nd, 2006, 04:53 PM
As has been noted, all that would do is cause the guests to register, leaving the same number of people online - it doesn't matter to the server whether you've registered or not.

Well when looking around here and there 700 users on typical web based MB isn't much at all. Forums like www.howardforums.com for example running easily 6000+ users at any given time. Or www.gaiaonline.com with whooping 31391 users :o
Hint: maybe it's time to change your software or replace programmers

If the board is "under attack", it seems 2B non-deliberate, and "from within". Specifically, though there was a fairly short shutdown for maintainence a few days ago, the "Server Busy" message occasionally appears, especially during times like the Dubai final.

vutt's point about the number of users "running @ any one time" on a mobile phone forum (and members of that other one) misses something important: "click-click-click-click-click" (meaning rapid fire page reloads, because, God forbid a game in a tight match goes to 30-0 without one catching 15-0 enroute).

You don't want server ovaloads, like don't do that? And re. the board getting enough ad revenue to get more bandwith, etc: RU willing to stop using Non-Tennis for the slew of openly sexual posts? I don't mean discussions about orientation, STD's, or other serious subjects, I mean the "I wanna fuck Poster X" ones.

Sorry, but (since "adult" advertisers probably don't run on youth oriented sites, like sports boards) that leaves ones like (Tennis Warehouse, to take one example). But those type are quite unlikely to risk offending their regular customers by seeming to endorse what many here appear to have a compulsion to post.

So on both issues above (the "porn in worded form", and the demand feeding re. "up to the second" scores) stop "bashing" the board's owners for a problem created by whatever # of members. Put another way, plz grow up and realize that when one adds up a lot of seemingly insigficant actions, the effects aren't always pleasant.
