View Full Version : Why is Vaidisova in Memphis and Zvonareva in Dubai?

Is this not strange? Surely Vaidisova has to stop playing the lower tiers all the time because it's clear she needs to face some stiffer competition to be able to one day compete with the top players.

Zvonareva usually plays Memphis and now when she really needs some wins she's playing one of the strongest tier IIs you'll get.

Switz does not understand

I don't get this kid. With five tier 3's I think she needs to get a move on,and learn by playing against the best.

Vaidisova is trying to become the Queen of TierIII,IV titles while Zvonareva was fed up with it and trying to win some big ones

Why not?

Nicole wants another title, and its more easier here than in Dubai. Vera, should really be playing Memphis as she has won the last two years, so its really "her" tournament, but probably was put off not being the top seed and having the prospect of facing Nicole in the QF/SF.

i think Nic lives in the US. she and doesn't want to fly across the Atlantic to Middle East since there's gonna be big events in the US in the next 2 weeks.

I think because Nicole has better chance to win the title in Memphis.
There are many top players who play in Dubai so it's tough to win here<i guess>
It's smart choice but not courageous. :tape:

Well Vera didnt have much success at playing well in lower tournaments. Auckland was nice but I dont even think Vera herself expected it.
People really want to take you out as one of the top seeds.
It was a problem Lindsay said after losing in Strasbourg years ago. The crowd usually isnt pulling for you.
Winning Memphis last year didnt help Vera. It seemed to even put her more in a funk.
Vera was 13-18 after winning Memphis.

Nicole needs to continue to play a similar schedule like last year. Noone bitched about Maria playing Memphis in 2004 when she was ranked in top 25.
She continues to take things on her terms and not worry about the results in big tournis.
Nicole continues to be consistent where it counts. Nicole has yet to lose to a player ranked lower than her at a slam. She has clearly shown that she deserves to be ranked where she is now.
I really dont agree with the Smashnova comparisons because when Anna was ranked in top 20, she was absolutely horrible at the slams, 3 first round losses in 2001 and 2002.
1st round losses to habsudova, Nagyova, Torrens Valero, Srebotnik, Schiavone, Widjaja.
So 2 of those losses arent bad but where are the other women???

Sharapova did the same thing, and this bought her ranking up.

Because Vaidisova in Australia saw what happens when she faces a top player

Obviously, I don't know. However.... it looks like Vaidisova is taking a measured approach, increasing the level of difficulty of her tournaments gradually. Why should she be like Hantuchova or Zvonareva, and constantly lose Tier I and II tournaments, becasue they never took the time to let their games mature? Why shouldn't Vaidisova wait til next year to go to a strictly Tier I and II schedule? Outside of SHarpaova, what player her age is developing better than she is?

i would suggest that her gaming really isn't developing. She's putting herself up against the same sort of players every week who she can blow of the court with a big serve and an easy put away.

she needs to start facing tougher opposition to get used to players getting her balls back with interest. she isn't going to magically find a significantly superior level beating girls ranked below her.

I'm not saying never player lower tier tournaments but she seems to always choose the lower tier event.

She's a top 15 player and her record against players above her is quite horrendous. She's hardly even competitive in general.

I would suggest even Golovin or Ivanovic are showing better signs of development because although they aren't as consistant they giving it to top players and working on news aspect of their game. The fact that she lost to a junior champion today also says something to me about her development.

Maybe both Vera and Nicole should have played Bogota judging by today's results :tape: although Emilie would have crushed them

Is Vera a Gold-Exempt player for 2006?

Because if she is, she wouldn't be allowed to play a Tier III in a week which has a Tier II.
