cellularsouth Charity Challenge

World No. 1 doubles team and Memphis top seeds Bob and Mike Bryan found themselves on opposing sides of the net Monday night during the cellularsouth Charity Challenge with Anna Kournikova and Tracy Austin. Bob partnered Kournikova to a 7-6, 7-6 victory after an entertaining duel that entertained the enthusiastic crowd on hand.

At one point Bob fired a 130 mph ace by Mike. In the next game Austin’s serve was clocked at a more sedate 60 mph, prompting the former World No. 1 to ask aloud “Can we turn that thing off?”

Money raised from the event benefits the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center and the Katrina Relief Fund.

Just pray that neither Evert nor Austin ever finds out that you referred to the latter as Chrissy. I'd like to find out which of them gets more pissed off, though. ;)

I still think Anna looks to skinny in her legs and arms. Give up smoking and start training too!

But it's nice to see her doing charity events! She will always pull a crowd.

People who watched her exhibition in Brazil say she's lost the muscle she would require to play tennis at a competitive level. She looks even worse now. Those arms look like twigs.

ANNA'S AUTRUISM

(Written By Phil Stokenberg, Tennis Writer, Memphis' Commercial Appeal)

"In the mixed doubles exhibition match Monday before the night session, Anna Kournikova and Bob Bryan defeated Tracy Austin and Mike Bryan, Bob's twin, 7-6, 7-6.

Proceeds from the exhibition, which required a seperate ticket for admission, will benefit one of three organizations: St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital, Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, and the Katrina Relief Fund.

"This is my third time in five years." Kournikova said. "In general, the main reason I keep coming back here is because of the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. I've visited the kids before, and it's a wonderful, amazing experience. And it's a great opportunity to be in front of my fans again."

Kournikova, 24, plays a number of charitable ehibitions annually and has played Team Tennis. She has not played on the WTA Tour full-time since 2002, but said Monday she wouldn't rule out returning.

"Who knows if I'll come back," she said. "That's why I would like not to make a retirement announcement. You never know. I would not come back unless I feel 100 per cent, whether it's mentally or physically. All those factors have to come together for me to come back. I don't want to come back and play half-effort (tennis)."

While she has appeared as a model in several publications since dropping off the tour, she said she will continue picking up a racquet.

"Tennis is a huge part of my life, it has been and always will be," Kournikova said. "But there are obviously other interests I'm pursuing, and there are still a lot of other things that I would like to experience."

Anna played in a exhibition in Richmond, VA late last year with Andre, Steffi and Andy. She looked so skinny and frail and her serve was about 40 MPH. Steffi and Andre just feasted on that serve and Anna looked a little silly but she was having fun and I guess that's all that matters to her these days.

I don't think her fans should think that she will make any kind of comeback to the tour. There is no way that could happen.

I like Anna K. and all, but I hope her "exhibition" career doesn't result her signing autographs from the back of a van @ a flea market.

Now that is something I'd pay to see: someone walking up to Tracy Munchkin, I mean, Austin, and saying, "Hi! You must be Pam Shriver. What was it like never winning a major singles title?" ;)

LAWRENCEVILLE — Tennis starlet Anna Kournikova and Wimbledon legend John McEnroe will take center court at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Tickets are expected to go on sale in early March.
The two tennis celebrities will play in the Mercedes-Benz Gwinnett Classic, along with former world No. 1 Jim Courier and doubles champion Jana Novotna. The exhibition tournament is scheduled May 6. It’s the first time the Arena has hosted a tennis event.
“Atlanta is a hotbed for tennis,” Arena Marketing Director Chris Hendley said. “One reason we wanted this tournament is that it had several big names that we thought everyone would be interested in.”
The Mercedes-Benz Gwinnett Classic will work with VolleyFest, a charity that supports cancer research.
