Sharapova insists she is Russian
From correspondents in Dubai
February 21, 2006

MARIA Sharapova has launched a vigorous attack on those who say she has never played Federation Cup for Russia because she doesn't want to.

"There are so many rumours about me which are untrue and that's one of them," she said. "Some of them are so untrue you just have to laugh at them.

"It's quite untrue that I don't want to play for Russia. I have a Russian heart," insisted the 19-year-old who has lived for most of the past decade in Florida, with increasing gossip that she might become a naturalised American.

"I play for my country," Sharapova went on. "When you see the draw at a tournament you see my country, Russia, next to my name.
"Unfortunately in my career I don't get as much time to spend there as I would like, but when I go that's where I feel like I belong.

It's the way of life and the culture. I lived there for seven years, and every time I go back and hear people speaking Russian, or when I call and order room service in Russia it feels so cool it's amazing to see and hear it again. That's where I feel comfortable."

I really hope she plays Fed cup this year,
so that people will stop with this nonesense already.
The girl says she's Russian.
She is.
Period!

She certainly speaks American English with a Russian accent. And being over 18, and a resident for as long as she has been, she could apply for U.S. citizenship if she wanted to.

I thought you were the marketing guru. In that case you would understand the marketing advantages of Sharapova remaining a Russian citizen despite being a de facto American. The hot blonde Russian marketing model is a proven seller. That's what this is all about for Team Sharapova.

Maria speaks English with a Russian accent? It sounds a lot like an American accent to me. And she speaks Russian with an American accent as well.

She may help herself with this problem if after she loses in Moscow again she not respond to questions of what she's going to do next with (I'm going home) in referring to her house in Florida. :o

Well, it all will be clear very soon when Russia will meet Belgium in Fed cup: will Maria play or again she will miss...?
Moreover, assuming That Elena Dementieva will be there in the Russian team, if Maria will come, it will be very interesting what will be their relationship. Elena said several times that Russia will be stronger with Maria but she also said that Maria had several options to join the Russian team and she didn't come and not because of injuries... :fiery: :fiery:

Oh Kournikova is a different thing. But Maria? really? Her English sounds Russian accent-free to me for some reason. But she does speak Russian with an American accent. It's funny to compare her Russian to Lena or Nastya's way of speaking their language.

Well there are several other players who hardly train and live in the country which they represent. It's not just Maria who left her home country as a child to pursue tennis.

it'd certainly be easier for her to claim she was american, so if she wants to say she's russian, then she is. i don't see why people want her to deny her heritage. although her playing style is pretty american, i'd say.

I think Maria insists she feels Russian because her father wants her to. If she were smart, or allowed by daddy to do so, she would become an American citizen and play for the US Fed Team where she would be welcomed. As she said, in Russia, she was going HOME. Her home is, and has been for most of her life, in the USA.

Hantuchova lives in Monaco. Does that mean she's not Slovakian? No.

I'm not a fan of Sharapova, but the only reason people are saying this is because she's successful.

Yes. It's the successful "Russian tennis babe" trademark first patented by Kournikova and nothing else - it's the only reason Masha claims she's still Russian.

Give it a couple of years; once she's become the crossover celebrity Kournikova (still) is, she'll apply for US citizenship and reap the advantages of that. It's inevitable.

I must add that I hope I'm wrong on this though.

i think it's quite likely that Kournikova has in fact already adopted US citizenship, but probably she did it without fanfare and it went right under the media's radar. Hundreds of thousands of Russians have claimed US citizenship in the last five years. It's pretty funny, a lot of Russians who live here bag on our country all the time, calling us stupid Americans and such, and then they beg to become citizens. That's why i respect Myskina and Dementieva so much, because they are obviously proud to be Russian and they live in Russia and that's it, they would never dream of changing. They're not faking anything.

Impossible to get through to closed minds. I actually like Maria as a tennis player, marvel at her left handed shots on the run and her competiveness. I'll say it for one last time. She's overkill off the court and may be headed for a big fall, just like Capriatti had some years ago. For her sake I hope I am wrong, but don't be surprised if and when it happens. BTW, she won't play Fed Cup against Belgium. I can already hear the excuses now.

well Maria's the most popular and highest-paid female athlete, not to mention the 1st Russian world No.1, something Myskina and Elena D would kill to have the honor... so the majority of the people are mindless teeny boppers, huh?
Anya and Elena D can say anything they want... but if, if Maria decides to play FedCup, Shamil will have no hesitation in kicking one of them off the team if they object
btw, I thought Anya and Maria were once friends until... I dunno what happened... it's not like Anya and Elena get on that well with the other Russians either... take Svetlana for example...
So? Kournikova off-court? who cares? As long as she remains like Seles, I don't care.
Get over the grunting... Seles and Serena, two of the greatest players in the history of the game did it, so what?
Too much publicity? Why is that a bad thing if it doesn't distract her? Her results are consistent...

well Maria's the most popular and highest-paid female athlete, not to mention the 1st Russian world No.1, something Myskina and Elena D would kill to have the honor... so the majority of the people are mindless teeny boppers, huh?
Her results are consistent...
men, that was a good one :yeah:

You again. Leave me alone. Seriously, Maria is headed for a big fall. Too much self indulgence in herself is going to get her. Money does not make you an success, character, integrity and humility does. I doubt if you understand that.

You are a nut. Elena Dementieva is all class, on and off the court, plus she doesn't flaunt her beauty and believe me, she has it. Most of your comments are mindless dribble. I think you need a valium to calm yourself down. No one is going to get kicked off the Russian Fed Cup team. You must be looney.
Anyway it is a moot point. Maria will not play Fed Cup against Belgium, because she knows she has little chance of winning. What I have noticed about Maria is how very insecure she is, but then again most 18 year old girls are. She still isn't sure if she is Russian or American. I know one thing, her tennis and bank account were made in America, right where she lives full time.
Case closed. :)

What were you saying about closed minds??
You clearly know little about Maria and even the Fed Cup situation...closing the case is probably a good idea so the rest of the GM doesnt have to go through reading your poorly informed posts.

Myskina won the Fed Cup for Russia in 2004 and Elena last year won all 3 of her matches in the final against France. Where was Global girl? Probably at a shallow fashion show, where she belongs. Maria won't play against Belgium. I can hear the excuses now. Bird flu or maybe mad cow desease. More like chicken out desease.
Maria knows she doesn't have a chance of beating Clijsters or JHH on clay, so she will punk out. Funny you never mention Elena Dementieva, an authentic Russian, who always plays Fed Cup for her country, but then again your favorite is an American Russian, who doesn't know who she should play for. Hey Morningglory, you are very ignorant, but you have plenty of company in this dysfunctional thread.

I really hope she plays Fed cup this year,
so that people will stop with this nonesense already.
The girl says she's Russian.
She is.
Period!

Exactly.

"It's quite untrue that I don't want to play for Russia. I have a Russian heart," insisted the 19-year-old who has lived for most of the past decade in Florida, with increasing gossip that she might become a naturalised American.
She is 18

Monica changed her nationality for security reasons. The man who stabbed her said he wouldn't have done it if she played for USA or Israel.
