NEW YORK Tennis star Serena Williams was hoping to find inspiration at New York Fashion Week.

At shows by Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta, she reveled in the sophisticated, sleek styles of the designers. Their use of color for fall, she says, will help inspire a fall palette for her new Exotic Jewels lips collection.

Williams has teamed with Flirt! Cosmetics as a guest creator for Exotic Jewels, a line of gem-style necklaces that contain one of three lip-color shades: Peach Sunrise, Caribbean Dream and Strawberry Rush. The necklaces ($12.50 each) debut this month at Kohl's department stores. Other celebrities, including singer Michelle Branch, also have collaborated with Flirt! as guest creators.

"I love makeup. My mom had red lipstick when I was little, and I just enjoyed how she used it. You could wear it everywhere, on the lips, cheeks," said Williams, who is rarely without her professional makeup kit. (She favors Bobbi Brown and M.A.C. lines.)

Williams said she was excited about embarking on a fashion career, even though she isn't fond of the "fashion police."

"I don't believe in the Blackwell list," she said, referring to Mr. Blackwell's annual celebrity Worst Dressed List. "He has people like Jessica Simpson on it, and she looks great every time I've seen her. And I've been on it. I just think you should wear what you like."

As for what she likes, Williams raves about a pair of black Diane von Furstenberg pants she bought during fashion week. "I got them three days ago, and I've already worn them four times. They are classic."

I wish she'd draw on her enormous talent and start playing tennis again. You know, the talent that made her relevent in the first place? If she's not "Serena Williams the Tennis Champion," who wants to buy her clothes or lip stick? It's just not a wise business decision to focus so much energy on her secondary interests like this. She didn't get the gig on ER because she's the next Meryl Streep. She got the gig on ER because she's a tennis superstar and it was November sweeps period. And, if she stops BEING "Serena Williams the Tennis Champion," she won't be GETTING anymore acting gigs. It's as simple as that.

Plus, all the stuff athletes/actors-turned-designers churn out just comes off as sort of cheap and cheesy. Did anyone really want to wear Michael Jordan's cologne or that shampoo that Cher used to hock on tv? Same thing with Sharapova's perfume. If someone gave you a gift of the new "Maria Sharapova fragrance," would you be thrilled about it? Or would you just assume they were walking through Rite Aid and remembered it was your birthday and had an extra $10 to throw down?

I know there's a lot of money to be had by doing it. But, good grief. Just play tennis and stop putting your name on any old thing that comes your way. (Introducing! The NEW! Venus Williams CROCK POT! The CROCK POT OF CHAMPIONS!) It just gets old and makes folks look bad.

Ah, she can never play another match in her career and she would still be "Serena Williams the Tennis Champion". Her achievements aren't lessoned because she is not currently playing tennis.

How much would a pair of Von Furstenburg pants cost?

Even when she is not playing the commentators find a way to talk about them. It might be irritating to some people but they will always be talked about, whether they are playing or not. It is truly annoying to some people that the sisters are not doing what everyone expects them to do and they are not hiding because they are injured. As Richard Williams said when they were critized when they were winning,he would have stopped playing. At this point in their careers it's obviously not about the money anymore
