NEW YORK — Tennis star Serena Williams was hoping to find inspiration at New York Fashion Week.
At shows by Marc Jacobs and Oscar de la Renta, she reveled in the sophisticated, sleek styles of the designers. Their use of color for fall, she says, will help inspire a fall palette for her new Exotic Jewels lips collection.
Williams has teamed with Flirt! Cosmetics as a guest creator for Exotic Jewels, a line of gem-style necklaces that contain one of three lip-color shades: Peach Sunrise, Caribbean Dream and Strawberry Rush. The necklaces ($12.50 each) debut this month at Kohl's department stores. Other celebrities, including singer Michelle Branch, also have collaborated with Flirt! as guest creators.
"I love makeup. My mom had red lipstick when I was little, and I just enjoyed how she used it. You could wear it everywhere, on the lips, cheeks," said Williams, who is rarely without her professional makeup kit. (She favors Bobbi Brown and M.A.C. lines.)
Williams said she was excited about embarking on a fashion career, even though she isn't fond of the "fashion police."
"I don't believe in the Blackwell list," she said, referring to Mr. Blackwell's annual celebrity Worst Dressed List. "He has people like Jessica Simpson on it, and she looks great every time I've seen her. And I've been on it. I just think you should wear what you like."
As for what she likes, Williams raves about a pair of black Diane von Furstenberg pants she bought during fashion week. "I got them three days ago, and I've already worn them four times. They are classic."
