I should never have played Australian Open final-Henin

Mon Feb 20, 2006 1:55 PM GMT

By Barry Wood

DUBAI, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Justine Henin-Hardenne believes she should never have attempted to start the Australian Open final against Amelie Mauresmo because she was too ill.

"Now I can think about what happened in Melbourne I have the feeling I should never have walked on the court because it could have been dangerous for me," the Belgian told reporters.

"It's not good to play with your health because you just have one life and you have many tennis tournaments."

The Belgian's decision to stop playing when 6-1 2-0 down in last month's final attracted widespread criticism.

In Dubai to play for the first time since that Melbourne walkout, Henin-Hardenne said on Monday she had been racked with pain during the night before the match. Medication for a shoulder injury had made her feel "very, very bad".

"I'm upset with myself that I didn't call anyone that night before the match. My stomach was in so much pain and I have regrets I should have made the call (to a doctor).

"I cannot stop people thinking something about me, but I know the way I am and I'm totally fine with the fact that I left the court.

"Some people understand and some don't. That's life. You can't make everyone happy and can't make everyone like you."

Fourth seed Henin-Hardenne, France's Mauresmo, Maria Sharapova of Russia and American Lindsay Davenport have been given byes into the second round of the Dubai tournament, and Henin-Hardenne says she plans to draw on the positives from her Australian Open experience.

"I didn't play for four months and I came back and won in Sydney and beat Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova and was again in a Grand Slam final. That's what I have to keep.

"So it's not that I had the opportunity to win another Grand Slam and didn't, because I'm sure I'll have other chances.

"I started to hit the ball 10 days after the final, but I just started to serve two days ago," said Henin-Hardenne.

"I don't know exactly what to expect this week. Now my shoulder is getting better but I just want to go step by step and play my first round and see what's going to happen."

She's correct on several issues...one, she should've called a doctor if she was in such severe pain and two, she shouldn't have played the final under those circumstances.

Why the hell would she not call a doctor? Especially with her health history (virus), it seems like that would be the first logical step. If she really was feeling as bad as this makes it seem and as she seems to think after the fact, any doctor would tell her not to play. She would have avoided a lot of negative backlash if she were just smart enough to call a doctor, but alas no...

Wise words. Pretty much sums up my attitude towards life - I do what I think is right and, if people hate me for it, it's their problem. Same goes for people who hate my favourite player - she doesn't give a shit for your opinion, why should I? There's no point in buying champagne for your fans and playing nice, people will either like you or they won't.

If Venus hadn't played through her injury, she maybe (coulda, woulda) wouldn't have the already 3 year slump (minus Wimbledon 2005 of course :worship: ) she's having now. But Justine was sick and no injury, so I do agree that Justine thinking that ending that final is overreaction from her part. And if she had withdrew from the match altogether?Wouldn't it have been the same outcome with sponsors and critics alike?Either way,no one is going to give her much peace.I think Justine understands the business behind it all and possibly thats the reason why she even took to court to even play the points.

And the way she had spoken in the conference after did not help matters much. But she is under loads of pressure as a top player in a huge GS final and whatever decision she took she has to live with it but stop slamming her haha

"I don't know exactly what to expect this week. Now my shoulder is getting better but I just want to go step by step and play my first round and see what's going to happen."
With all of her health problems that she has had, she was not concerned about calling a doctor at night we she had the pain
Then she is playing the match 5 minutes before retiring she wins a 30 something stroke rally and call it quits because playing was threatning for her health

Justine's full of Shit!

Did aliens take over her body when she said she never felt better, she hasn't felt this fit in a long time. Was this a lie?

I understand due to her virus and the time it took her she would be extra cautious, THEN why didn't she call a doctor the night before or the morning before the match.

IMO - Justine made the wrong decision, was feeling sorry for herself and let it get to her mentally. ADMIT IT JUSTINE!

There's no point in buying champagne for your fans and playing nice, people will either like you or they won't.

please grow up. what the hell does kim have to do with this argument? dont throw in players just to make you/your player look better. it doesnt work:rolleyes:

I'm not buying it. Having had so serious health problems she gave up on calling the doctor when she felt very, very ill? She's either not telling the truth or simply not very intelligent...
both :p
She thinks she can do things and people will overlook at them.
This happened with cheat/liying incidents at Rg 03 and Ao 04 in the final. Now this one.. definetly, i dunno why. I used to like her a lot, but after Rg 03 i´m an anty Henin forever.

WTF

Justine can't stop moaning about her health : she thinks she's the only one with health problems... If you read this article, you can conclude easily she thinks she was nearly dying on the court : full exaggeration and bullshit from her... She also is a compassion seeker : she always act as a victim...

Just read your post....... everything she has done is bullshit. I think you know her better then she. Maybe you should be a doctor.

I don't get it. She quits and it becomes disgraceful to sports? Just like that? What about the drug cases? Doesn't it ruin the entire sport for you then?

Then she is playing the match 5 minutes before retiring she wins a 30 something stroke rally and call it quits because playing was threatning for her health

That was the kicker for me. :tape:

I know right...Justine fans seem to be the main culprit in this pathetic attempt to defend their fave. :o

And as my brother (who has been to a US Open final before) said, people pay really good money to watch these players play, and for Justine to just say *holding stomach* "Nah, I don't feel like playing anymore" is not only disrespectful to the fans in the stadium, but also disrespectful to her opponent.

oh please.....she's trying to save face now.....Venus played the 03' Wimbledon final with a career threatening injury....if it was life threatening Justine would have never stepped on the court.....she needs to stop being such a baby and own up to what she did....doesn't surprise me though....she never owned up to what she did to Serena at the French in 03' in either

 Don't project your frustrations with your favourites on Justine.

wrong :retard:
Her decision affected entire sport and brought disgrace to it . Not to mention millions of dollars in lost revenue. You know advertisers have to be repaid for what was no match.

As if those top-ranked, marquee-name players who lost EARLY didn't disgrace the sport let alone decrease the interest in the latter, more high profile rounds of the tourney?

Justine didn't need to call a doctor because she knew EXACTLY what was wrong with her - a bad reaction to the anti-inflammatory pills, which frankly, you just have to let pass. Calling a doctor doesn't help anything. Frankly I think she only regrets not calling a doctor because without such an action she has no Proof that she Really Was Hurting to throw in her detractors' faces.

And I totally agree with Chrissie - all the hate over the Belgians (one "too nice," one "not nice enough") is ridiculous. It happens to all successful players, though, so whatever.
She could have taken a stomach protector (i dunno the real name of the medicine but i have taken those when my stomack is hurting when im taking strong medicines like antibiotics).
She had millions of reasons to call the doctor that night, getting the right medical attention, and even with her medical history she should have a personal doctor to travel with her or something, but she did not.
She just had a reason to retire (a stomach pain) and she did. Very lame, because it was something that she could have continued playing, take some medicines, go to the bathroom to buy some time, and try to finish the match, but once again she did not.

don't worry about it, saki. It was a -shall i say- valiant effort of you to try sarcasm, but it simply doesn't work here ;)
Maybe it's best for you to retire from this thread, nut then again, you might be considered a disgrace to this whole tennis board

Self-pitying words fron Justine..I wonder who wrote the script...Carlos or Pierre-Yves ;) Anyway, I believe some of it, but not all. Stupid decision not to call a doc if she was THAT sick. Guess she figured she would take a shot because Momo might choke, but she didn't.Which is worse anyway...giving Momo a walkover to her first slam or what transpired??

Can you even think objectively about Justine?!

Bit of a "drama queen" arn't you? :) :)

Justine didn't want to wake up Carlos or a doctor for it because it was in the middle of the night and thought that she would bother them. in these things she's doesn't seem to be self centered  ... this was utterly stupid, with her malady history and the important day in mind, and she knows it. it gives reason for people to not believe her and say she's full of shit.
I think if Pierre Yves would've been in the room with her that night, we might have seen a whole different scenario. damn PY, you could've saved all this shit in stead of waiting on your pilot exam results

Now my shoulder is getting better but I just want to go step by step and play my first round and see what's going to happen."
oH GOSH, who is asking her justification? She is the only one who feels bad about it...
Please Justine, dont talk, play tennis, that what you get paid for...
